Ghanaian musician and songwriter Kwame Nsiah-Apau, known by his stage name Okyeame Kwame, has revealed that he got his popular name “Rap Docta” from a concert.
Speaking to Afia Owusu on XZone on TV XYZ, Okyeame disclosed that around 1999 or 2000, he performed at a concert alongside Reggie Rockstone.
However, after Reggie’s performance, although the audience loved his rap, they didn’t fully understand it. So, Okyeame decided to explain the rap, and during this explanation, a Jamaican man remarked that he explained it like a doctor.
Inspired by this comment, Okyeame adopted the name “Rap Docta,” which has since become a household name in the Ghanaian community.
He recounted, “Around 1999 or 2000, I was booked for a show in downtown New York after Reggie Rockstone’s performance. They all loved it but didn’t understand. Then I said I will explain. While explaining, a Jamaican man said the way you explain is like a doctor teaching, and then we picked the name Rap Docta.”
