KGL’s GH¢173m Payment Reflects Monopoly Advantage, Not Corporate Heroism – Patric Wemegah

Communications strategist Patrick Yao Wemegah has questioned the celebration surrounding KGL Technology Limited’s reported GH¢173 million payment to the National Lottery Authority (NLA), arguing that the figure reflects the company’s privileged position in Ghana’s lottery industry rather than exceptional business performance.

In an article reacting to recent media reports, Wemegah said comparisons showing KGL paid more than the country’s 29 other licensed lottery operators combined fail to acknowledge the company’s control over the lucrative USSD and digital lottery channels.

According to him, KGL’s dominance is the result of a market structure that gives it access to the most profitable segment of the lottery business, making its strong financial performance predictable.

He further argued that tax and statutory payments should not be portrayed as acts of generosity, stressing that they are legal obligations owed to the state.

Drawing comparisons with lottery systems in the United Kingdom, the United States and parts of Europe, Wemegah maintained that successful lottery industries are built on competitive and transparent licensing arrangements rather than concentrated market control.

He also expressed support for ongoing efforts to review the sector, stating that increased competition could improve transparency, drive innovation and boost revenue generation.

Wemegah concluded that while KGL’s contribution to state revenue is significant, it should not be viewed as corporate heroism but as the expected outcome of operating within a highly advantageous market position.
