The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has extended urgent relief to families displaced by the recent violent clashes in Gbenyiri, Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District, Savannah Region.
On Wednesday, August 27, 2025, Minister Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey led a delegation to the temporary camp at the Sawla District Police Headquarters, where scores of women, children, and households are being sheltered by the Ghana Red Cross.
The clashes, triggered by a land dispute, claimed several lives and forced many to flee their homes.
The Minister and her team provided cooked meals and water to the displaced families, assuring them of government’s sustained support.
She emphasized that, under the Social Protection Act, the Ministry is activating emergency interventions including food relief, psychosocial services, and protection measures for the most vulnerable.
“As a government, we are committed to restoring dignity and hope to affected families. Women, children, and the elderly must never be left to suffer the heaviest burden of conflict,” Dr. Lartey said.
She expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for prioritizing the protection of vulnerable populations and thanked the Ghana School Feeding Secretariat and its caterers for mobilizing to provide meals.
As part of her mission, the Minister and the Savannah Regional Minister also paid a courtesy call on the Sawlawura to reinforce collaboration with traditional and regional authorities.
Dr. Lartey called for calm, urging all parties to pursue peaceful dialogue while reaffirming government’s commitment to stand by the victims until normalcy is restored.
The Ministry is working closely with the Savannah Regional Security Council (REGSEC), NADMO, the Ghana Red Cross, and other partners to ensure displaced families receive food, shelter, and essential services.
