NRSA to train motorists (okada) and tricycles (pragyia) riders

The Acting Director General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba, has urged Okada and Pragyia riders to comply with road traffic regulations, warning that offenders will face arrest and prosecution.

Amaliba revealed that the NRSA plans to train all riders on road safety, requiring them to wear uniforms and helmets before the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) issues them specialised license plates.

Training and Regulation Plans

Speaking to the Koforidua branch of the Tricycle Operators Association, Amaliba emphasized ongoing discussions about forming unions for rider registration to ensure better regulation.

“The legalisation will come with some restrictions. It is not going to be a free-for-all system like what exists now,” he stated.

He added that many riders lack proper training, which increases road accidents. To address this, the NRSA will introduce mandatory road safety training before licensing.

Mandatory Uniforms, Helmets, and License Plates

  • Riders will be required to wear prescribed uniforms and helmets.
  • DVLA will issue special number plates to trained and certified riders.
  • Police will begin arresting riders who fail to comply with these regulations.

“The police will start enforcing the law. If you do not obey the road traffic regulations, you will be arrested,” Amaliba warned.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance safety, reduce accidents, and bring order to the commercial use of motorcycles and tricycles in Ghana.
