President John Dramani Mahama has called for a stronger cooperation between Africa and the Caribbean in a bid to strengthens their shared commitment to building prosperity through trade, investment and collaboration.
President Mahama’s state visit to Jamaica which follows the United Nations resolution declaring the transatlantic slave trade and slavery as the gravest crime against humanity will ensure that ensures that future generations will know this history
Addressing delegates at the reparation dialogue at the University of West Indices on Monday, August 3, 2026 President Mahama called for a complete emancipation on all fronts.
“Today’s struggle is for economic emancipation, and that requires stronger cooperation between Africa and the Caribbean. My visit to Jamaica strengthens our shared commitment to building prosperity through trade, investment and collaboration” he stated.
President Mahama maintained that slavery was not an accident of history but a carefully organized system of exploitation sustained over centuries by political, legal, financial and commercial institutions adding that its effects continue to impact current generation.
“The effects of slavery and colonialism continue to influence wealth, opportunity, development and representation across the world” President Mahama said.
He said while Ghana remains committed to building a practical, united African and Caribbean position on reparations it must “evolve from moral arguments into structured international engagement supported by legal, diplomatic, institutional and financial mechanisms” he stressed. He added that a high-level dialogue of experts has been conveyed to ensure a smooth operation.
“We have convened strategic dialogues involving governments, scholars, legal experts, civil society, youth and the African diaspora to develop practical pathways towards justice”. He emphasized.
