Vice President Commissions 100 New Metro Mass Buses to Improve Public Transport.

Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has commissioned 100 newly acquired 29-seater buses for Metro Mass Transit Limited as part of government efforts to improve public transportation and enhance mobility across the country.

The buses, which form part of a 300-bus acquisition initiative, are expected to boost the operational capacity of Metro Mass Transit and provide safer, more reliable and affordable transportation services for commuters.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, the Vice President stressed the importance of an efficient transport system to national development.

“When our transport system is efficient, people, goods and services move as they should. That is why enhancing public transport is central to our economy,” she said.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang noted that the introduction of the buses would help reduce dependence on unsafe and costly transport options while easing pressure on commuters.

“These buses will increase carrying capacity, extend service to more communities, reduce pressure on commuters and provide them with a more dignified experience,” she added.

She further revealed that the buses are fuel-efficient and designed to prioritize passenger safety and comfort, describing them as part of government’s broader agenda to modernize public transportation.

According to the Vice President, the initiative aligns with the development agenda of President Mahama, which seeks to improve infrastructure, create jobs and stimulate economic activity through practical interventions.

The buses are also expected to support night transport services, shift workers and late-night economic activities in urban communities.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang disclosed that all operational requirements for the deployment of the buses, including registration, licensing, insurance, inspection and branding, had already been completed.

She urged management and staff of Metro Mass Transit to ensure proper maintenance of the buses and uphold professionalism in service delivery.

“The public deserves our respect. Please serve the public with courtesy and efficiency,” she stated.

The Vice President also called for increased local participation in future transport procurement’s, expressing hope that Ghanaian engineers, technicians and manufacturers would eventually contribute to producing parts used in assembling buses locally

.

Government, she emphasized, remains committed to investing in public transport as a means of improving productivity, safety and social equity across the country.
