World tourism day 2025 celebrated in Volta with sustainable actions at Agavedzi

The Volta Region on Saturday marked World Tourism Day 2025 with a series of activities highlighting sustainability, culture, and community participation.

The event, celebrated under the global theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” was led by the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, and the CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Maame Efua Houadjeto.

Coconut Tree Planting at Agavedzi
A symbolic highlight of the celebration took place at Agavedzi in the Ketu South District, where about 200 coconut seedlings were planted.

The initiative, beyond ceremony, represents resilience and renewal for a community heavily impacted by tidal erosion and wave damage in recent years.

It underscored the link between environmental conservation and tourism growth in vulnerable coastal areas.

Cultural Durbar and Activities
The commemoration was infused with rich cultural displays, beginning with a grand durbar of chiefs in the Agbozume/Klikor Traditional Area.

Visitors also enjoyed canoe rides on the Avu Lagoon, tours of the Hedzranawo Museum and Fort Prinzenstein, as well as performances showcasing local arts, heritage, and cuisine.

Minister’s Remarks
Minister Gomashie reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to ensuring that tourism development aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

She emphasized that the sector must integrate environmental conservation, cultural preservation, and community development to truly drive sustainable transformation.

Stakeholder Commitment
The Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority, along with traditional leaders and community stakeholders, stressed the importance of addressing environmental threats, particularly coastal erosion, while preserving cultural identity and creating economic opportunities for youth and artisans.

World Tourism Day, observed globally each year on September 27, serves as a reminder of tourism’s role in promoting sustainable development and cultural exchange.
