Ablakwa blasts GFA over Black Stars budget

A certain GFA official says I have no right to expose their unconscionable and lootocratic US$8.5million Black Stars budget.

He can rave, bark, howl, growl, roar and rant but nothing will stop me from demanding full accountability.

When as a Member of Parliament I see thousands of my beloved constituents go to bed each night in tents because of VRA’s catastrophic spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong dams, and when after 5 long months government and VRA callously claim they don’t have money to construct resettlement homes for my people; good conscience cannot permit me to be silent and watch evil triumph.

Our fellow compatriots including women, the aged and children would not have to live in tents donated by the US government and the Red Cross if they had GHS105million to replace their damaged homes.

My beloved constituents have done nothing wrong to deserve this; rather, they are going through all these suffering, indignity and destitution so the Akosombo and Kpong dams would be preserved for the entire nation to enjoy electricity.

This struggle is about JUSTICE and no one can intimidate us.

I salute the group of courageous and patriotic sports journalists who have today formally notified the police of their intention to demonstrate on the 14th of February, 2024. My displaced persons and I shall be joining this protest.

We shall remain resolute and relentless in the pursuit of justice, probity, transparency and accountability.

For God and Country.

Gabby says he has retired from politics

A leading member of the New Patriotic Party, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has announced that he has retired from domestic politics.

The legal practitioner who is also a cousin to President Akufo-Addo made the pronouncement on Accra-based Asaase radio which he owns.

Gabby also expressed his disappointment with the inability of the NPP to effectively communicate its achievements in recent years.

“I have retired from domestic politics,” he said. “I get somehow frustrated by the narratives, and the big disappointment I have is with the governing New Patriotic Party itself, it is the lack of recognition of the work that they have done. For me, it’s a major disappointment.”

Otchere-Darko acknowledged the substantial progress made by the Akufo-Addo led government in navigating the challenging economic landscape between 2021 and 2022.

Despite the severe economic challenges during this period, he highlighted that various policies implemented by the administration successfully prevented Ghanaians from enduring queues for essential products and services.

“You know when there are crises, there are people who benefit from crisis but I don’t know who benefitted from the crisis of 2022. The Banks suffered, retailers suffered, manufacturers suffered, I mean it was everywhere,” he added.

Mahama repeats pledge to strengthen corruption fight

The flag bearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), former President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to combat corruption when voted to power.

Mr Mahama stated that high level of corruption in the Akufo-Addo administration has resulted in huge wastage, costing the tax payers millions of cedis that could have been used to develop the country.

Commenting on the opaque transaction between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd (SML) which has raised eye brows in the country, John Mahama said his administration will not accept or recognise the said SML contract.

“For the monies they’ve taken already, we will hold all of them to account,” Mr Mahama said during an interaction with representatives of organised labour, trade associations and the public in Koforidua.

Mahama who is on his  ‘Building Ghana Tour’ in the Eastern Region chastised the Akufo-Addo administration for impoverishing Ghanaians and superintending over graft and rot in the country.

“You cannot fleece a country like this… now Ghanaians are not surprised again; reports of corruption does not shock Ghanaians again, because everybody is tired of hearing of the cases and no effort by the government to fight it,” the opposition leader stated.\

Corruption Perception Index

Mr Mahama’s comment comes at a time Ghana has scored zero for the fourth consecutive year in fighting corruption.

Ghana made no progress in the latest Corruption Perceptions Index, which ranks Ghana as 70th out of 180 countries in terms of corruption.

The Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), the local chapter of Transparency International in its report said, “Ghana scored 43 out of a clean score of 100 and ranked 70th out of 180 countries and territories included in the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2023 released today, 30th January 2024 by Transparency International (TI). This marks the fourth consecutive year of stagnation in Ghana’s anti-corruption efforts, as indicated by the CPI.”

Transparency International attributed Ghana’s stagnation to the deteriorating justice system, which it says is reducing the accountability of public officials and therefore allowing corruption to thrive.

“Under the theme for the CPI 2023 – Corruption and Justice, Ghana’s stagnated score highlights a global trend of deteriorating justice systems, which is reducing the accountability of public officials and therefore allowing corruption to thrive.”

“The connection is reinforced by Ghana’s performance in the Rule of Law Index produced by the World Justice Project, which demonstrates a concerning decline. In the 2015 Rule of Law Index, Ghana scored 0.60 and ranked 34, but by 2023, Ghana’s score had decreased to 0.55, with a corresponding drop in ranking to 61.”

NDC statements on the fifth anniversary of the Ayawaso west wuogon bye-election disturbances.

Exactly five years ago today, heavily armed men from the national security of Ghana invaded the bye-election for the replacement of the then deceased member of Parliament of the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency in the Greater Accra Region.

In the confusion that followed, many persons received life-changing injuries from the indiscriminate firing of sophisticated assault rifles that the state sanctioned terrorists wielded.

The National Democratic Congress withdrew from the bye-election and that particular bye-election recorded the lowest turn out of any election in the history of the 4th Republic.

The Akufo-Addo government set up a high powered Commission of Enquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shameful episode and make appropriate recommendations. The sad reality today however is that the government has refused to implement the recommendations of the Commission of Enquiry thus leaving the seriously injured and economically challenged victims to fend for themselves in an economy destroyed beyond recognition by the singular ineptitude of the Akufo-Addo government.

This is the last year of the insensitive Akufo-Addo government which, with the Ayawaso West Wuogon disturbances as a focal learning point, managed to kill eight more people in order to win the 2020 general elections.

In the face of all this, the NDC calls on the government to immediately carry out the recommendations of the Emil Short Commission of Enquiry to bring quick and long lasting relief to the victims of that dastardly event.

To bring end to the darkness that has befallen our homeland since the coming of the Akufo-Addo led government of the NPP, the NDC calls on all voters in Ghana to stand ready to massively vote out the Akufo-Addo government which has stained our democracy with the blood of innocent Ghanaians. Ghana deserves to develop in peace and unity all the time.

Dapaah case nails Akufo-Addo & Bawumia gov’t as corrupt – Bawa Mogtari

We have been stating for years that John Mahama has been a victim of extreme prejudice and political propaganda led sadly by a man whose sole aim was to become president at all costs.

This he could only achieve by destroying his predecessor, a good man, a very patriotic Ghanaian, Nana Akufo-Addo, in the past touted as his friend and a good colleague on the other side of the political divide in parliament.

Recall the Ford vehicle issue and the accusations of corruption against Mr Mahama by the NPP. Let me also mention the bus branding ‘scandal’, which again led to serious accusations, mass mobilisation and condemnation by the NPP and then-candidate Akufo-Addo.

These are two significant examples of how corruption and graft were used as political leverage to justify the claim that the NDC and its leadership were incompetent and incapable of managing the country’s affairs.

It is worth noting that today, Akufo Addo and Bawumia are in power, but they have yet to be able to prove any of these claims. From the actions and omissions of their government, it is obvious to Ghanaians that they are corrupt and comfortable associating with corruption.

The level of dishonesty and disregard for the Ghanaian people by this NPP Government is unprecedented and gravely unimaginable.

This president promised to put his presidency on the line to end galamsey at a time when it was axiomatic that they were and are heavily involved in it. This is manifestly evident in Frimpong Boateng’s report, bearing in mind that the president himself commissioned this work.

How the former Minister has since been treated in the aftermath of the leaked report is now a matter of public record and needs no reiteration.

That galamsey is perpetrated by members of the president’s team and government is confirmed, and it has been established that some NPP members have been using expensive mining equipment without authorisation, raping the state of its natural resources, and destroying our water bodies; whilst Akufo Addo looks on unconcerned.

You may recall the regrettable will of the late Sir John, who left forest concessions, properties, and state lands to his family upon his passing. What is the current status of this matter? Why has the President yet to take action? We are eagerly waiting for the President’s response. Galamsey is still ongoing, causing damage to our water bodies.

Let me also remind you of the recent scandal involving Cecelia Dapaah. This case has only reinforced the accusations of corruption against President Akufo-Addo.

As every Ghanaian predicted, the case has ended. A court ruling has ordered that all the hard currency and amounts in the bank be returned to Cecilia Dapaah.

This decision is a travesty that we are all struggling to understand. The amount of money involved pales in comparison to any alleged corruption claims or allegations under President Mahama.

The OSP has ultimately truncated one of the biggest scandals of all time and an irrefutable opportunity for this Government to prove itself as one willing and able to deal with corruption.

The inability or the desire to fight corruption vehemently has conferred on Akufo-Addo the title of a clearing agent. As he predicted, his ‘dear’ Cecilia Dapaah has been cleared, and what little integrity she has left will be for history to judge.

Mr Mahama was tough enough on corruption, and many instances confirm this. All the allegations of corruption during his first term were actuated by malice and by a trumpeted campaign carefully hatched by the NPP, particularly Akufo Addo and Bawumia, to taint and tarnish the unblemished character of President Mahama.

Ghanaians should be outraged at the mismanagement of the country and join the fight for change to rescue the nation from a failed government.

Government can’t undertake any meaningful development before it’s kicked out – Mahama alerts

2024 Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama says Ghanaians must be on the look out for vote-buying promises and shoddy projects in the days ahead as government desperately explores how to outwit electorates again.

According to him, with the limited time left, the NPP can only promise phantom projects to mislead unsuspecting voters.

“What they (government ) have done in the last 8years is what their capacity could handle. There is nothing more they can do at this time. They have messed up the economy” he intimated.

John Mahama, accompanied by former Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Dr Calistus Mahama, National executives of the party, MPs and other party officials reiterated the NDC’s commitment to be realistic with the populace and deliver on policy objectives to improves lives.

“People say politics is dirty so just tell the people what they want to hear and win power. But we in that NDC are not like that. We have been swallowed by debt. They promised you heaven but what one developmental project can you in point in this constituency since the NDC left office in 2016. The masses are suffering but just a few are enjoying. They think the elections can be bought. They gave 200 each to constituents in Assin North but it didn’t wash. If they bring the money take it nothing will happen to you” he stressed.

John Mahama was speaking at a town hall meeting at Frankadua in the Asuogyaman Constituency as part of his two day Building Ghana Tour of the Eastern Region.

South Africa stun Morocco to book quarter-final ticket .

South Africa produced one of the major upsets in the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Côte d’Ivoire 2023 after knocking Morocco out with a 2-0 win in the round of 16.

The first half saw few goalscoring opportunities being created.

The Atlas Lions of Morocco got the best chance of the first half but saw their goal being disallowed by the VAR.

The second half was opposite to what the first half provided in-terms of drama and goals.

South Africa took the lead in the 57th minute when striker Evidence Makgopa connected to a pass inside the 18-yard box to hit the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.

After going down, Morocco had just one mission, to equalize. This led to the introduction more forwards.

Morocco were awarded a penalty in the 83rd minute when a ball hit the hands of Teboho Mokoena in the South African 18-yard box and a penalty was awarded after VAR review.

Achraf Hakimi stepped up to convert but he ended up hitting the ball against the crossbar and his effort went off the pitch.

Huge relief it was for South Africa after the miss but the pressure was still on them.

Sofyan Amrabat was shown the exit after a challenge on a Mokoena as last man and was shown a second yellow, which was upgraded to a straight red after VAR review by referee Mahmood Ismail

South Africa took advantage of the numerical disadvantage and added the second goal to seal the game thanks to a wonderful free kick by Teboho Mokoena.

South Africa will play Cape Verde on Saturday, February 3 at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro at the quarter-finals.

Mali edge Burkina Faso in thrilling round of 16 clash.

Mali are through to the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Cote d’ivoire 2023 quarter finals after a nail-biting 2-1 win over Burkina Faso on Tuesday in Korhogo.

An unfortunate own goal by Edmond Tabsoba along with a second half strike by Lassine Sinayoko were enough for the Eagles to soar over the Stallions at a packed Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium.

It took just 3 minutes for Mali to take the lead after a powerful Amadou Haidara header came off the woodwork, but instead of it being cleared away, Edmond Tabsoba was unfortunate to see his clearance go into his own net.

Minutes later, Kamory Doumbia, who was a handful for the Burkinabe defense almost doubled his side’s lead after a great build up saw him through on goal, but his effort was denied by the advancing Kouakou Koffi.

A golden opportunity fell the way of the in-form Sinayoko to double the lead after doing well to turn his marker to unleash a powerful effort that was denied by the alert Koffi in the 35th minute.

Carried by the momentum, the Eagles continued surging forward but wasted numerous opportunities as they took the slender lead into the break.

Returning from the recess, Sinayoko capitalized on a lapse of concentration after beating the offside trap to face the keeper and comfortably slot home with just minutes into the restart.

A lifeline was given to the Stallions after Mohamed Konate’s headed effort came off the arm of Boubacar Kouyate for VAR to award the penalty that was converted by skipper, Bertrand Traore in the 57th minute.

The Stallions eventually gained their rhythm and piled on the pressure, but a resolute Mali defense kept them at bay, as the Eagles soar into the quarter-finals to face tournament hosts, Cote d’Ivoire on Saturday, 3 February in Bouake.
