‘If you’ll abolish E-levy, do so now’ – Akandoh tackles Bawumia

The MP for Juaboso, Mr Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has admonished Ghanaians to ignore the new promises of the flag bearer of the NPP, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, saying he is a dishonest politician who wants to swindle electorates for power.

The former minister made this assertion while reacting to the new pledges from the vice president to abolish some taxes, which are his creation, when he wins the 2024 elections.

The legislator, who mentioned the economic down turn and a weak currency under Bawumia’s tenure, said the NPP’s new leader lacks credibility which is stemmed from his consistent lies to Ghanaians ever since he became the vice president of the Republic.

Commenting on Bawumia’s pledge to scrap the controversial Electronic Levy, Akandoh stated that the vice president was behind the drafting of the tax and , as such, cannot be trusted to abolish it when he wins power.

What He Said About E-Levy

While delivering his first major address to the nation after he was elected NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, stated categorically that he would abolish the tax on electronic financial transactions (e-levy) if he wins the 2024 polls.

Dr Bawumia added that his bid for a Digital and Cashless Ghana will be significantly boosted if e-levy is abolished.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

“To move towards a cashless economy, however, we have to encourage the population to use electronic channels of payment. To accomplish this, there will be no taxes on digital payments under my administration. The e-levy will, therefore, be abolished,” he declared.

Dr. Bawumia also announced that as part of a new tax regime by his government, he will abolish the emission tax, tax on betting as well as the proposed 15% VAT on electricity tariffs, if it is in existence by January 2025.

Akandoh’s Jab

Mr Akandoh who described Dr Bawumia as pathetic liar, indicated that prior to the drafting of the tax policy in 2022, the Vice President had already declared his opposition to levies on electronic financial transactions in an interview, questioning the rationale behind such moves.

“Before the introduction of E-levy, Bawumia opposed it but when E-Levy was introduced he could not come out to speak on it but went for a party to celebrate the implementation of the tax.”

“What does Bawumia mean when he says he will abolish the E-Levy? If he will do it, what is preventing him from scrapping it now? He does not have the credibility for any Ghanaian to trust him,” Akando posited while listing most of his failed promises, including the crash of Ghana’s economy which he said was doing well under Mahama yet Bawumia criticised its growth.

He said It is John Mahama who can be trusted to rescue the country from the economic mess that has brought untold hardhip to Ghanaians over the past 7 years.

He said the policies of Mahama are clear resonate with the immediate needs and aspirations of Ghanaians, adding that the NDC rejected E-levy from its conception and will abolish it when they return to power.

John Mahama’s Job Creation Drive

On his tour of the country recently dubbed ‘Building Ghana Tour’, Mr Mahama touched on some of his job creation and Industrialization policies which was hinged on implementing a 24-hour economy.

He also pledged to establish a Western Industrial Development Enclave, create well-paying jobs through various initiatives, including completing abandoned projects and establishing factories based on ecological advantages.

The former president also said the next NDC administration will establish factories across the country based on ecological areas’ comparative advantages. For instance, he mentioned Pwalugu tomato factory, meat factory for Wulugu and Zuarungu, cocoa, cashew, tomato, and other food processing plants.

He also promised to increase government’s share of profit and revenue from natural resources to fund development and reduce tax burdens.

Senegal election delay ruled unlawful.

The decision to postpone this month’s elections in Senegal is against the country’s constitution, the country’s top court has ruled.

The Constitutional Council annulled President Macky Sall’s decree and a contentious bill passed by parliament moving the vote to December.

Widespread protests have gripped the West African country, once considered a bastion of democracy in the region.

Opposition figures said it amounted to an “constitutional coup”.

Mr Sall had announced he was pushing the election back because of concerns over the eligibility of opposition candidates.

His proposal had been backed by 105 out of the 165 MPs after a fiery debate which saw police remove some opposition MPs from the chamber. A six-month postponement was originally proposed, but a last-minute amendment extended it to 10 months, or 15 December.

Mr Sall had reiterated that he was not planning to run for office again. But his critics accused him of either trying to cling on to power or unfairly influencing whoever succeeds him.

Opposition candidates and lawmakers, who had filed a number of legal challenges to the bill, will feel vindicated by the court’s decision on Thursday evening.

Khalifa Sall, a leading opponent and a former mayor of the capital Dakar, who is not related to the president, had called the delay a “constitutional coup”, while Thierno Alassane Sall, another candidate, also no relation, called it “high treason”.

The court said it was “impossible” for the election to be held on the original date of 25 February – just 10 days time – but urged authorities to organise it “as soon as possible”.

Most candidates have not been campaigning since President Sall issued his 3 February decree, hours before campaigns were meant to kick off.

The decision comes on the same day as several opposition politicians and civil society members were released from prison, in what some in the country viewed as a move to appease public opinion.

Senegal had long been seen as one of the most stable democracies in the region. It is the only country in mainland West Africa that has never had a military coup. It has had three largely peaceful handovers of power and until earlier this month had never delayed a presidential election.

President Sall has been in power since 2012, with his second term in office due to end this April.

Seychelles drops witchcraft charges against opposition’s Patrick Herminie

Seychelles’ main opposition leader Patrick Herminie is no longer facing witchcraft charges after prosecutors dropped the case against him.

He had always denied the accusations and speaking outside court on Thursday described them as “malicious action”.

The police had said the case related to the discovery of two bodies exhumed from a cemetery on the island of Mahé.

Mr Herminie plans to run in the 2025 presidential election under the banner of the United Seychelles Party.

He called the case an “abuse of power” by President Wavel Ramkalawan, the AFP news agency quotes him as saying.

“We do not have the right to arrest someone and put them in prison for nothing at all,” he said.

The president has not commented on the case.

Mr Herminie served as the Speaker of Seychelles’ parliament between 2007 and 2016.

The prosecutor told a magistrates’ court in the capital, Victoria, that he was withdrawing all charges against him.

No reasons were given for the decision.

Last October, Mr Herminie and six of his Seychellois co-accused were freed on bail.

They were charged with the possession of items intended for use in witchcraft, conspiracy to perform witchcraft and procuring services related to witchcraft, according to local media reports at the time.

Prosecutors originally alleged that the opposition leader’s name appeared in a WhatsApp message between a Seychellois national and a Tanzanian suspect, who was arrested last September at the main international airport.

The Tanzanian was found with items allegedly related to witchcraft, including stones, black wooden artefacts, small bottles of brownish liquid, a collection of powders and documents with strange language and “demonic and satanic” symbols, they said.

The documents were similar to those found in Catholic churches and other places that had been vandalised in Mahé, Seychelles’ largest island, prosecutors further alleged.

Along with Mr Herminie four others who were part of the original case are no longer facing charges.

A new case has been opened against the Tanzanian and two others, the Seychelles News Agency reports.

Mr Herminie told local media last year that more than 40 police officers had raided his party’s offices in Victoria.

He added that the officers searched for items related to witchcraft, including “bones, body parts, and objects associated with Christianity” but did not find any.

“In Seychelles’ history, there has never been until now, a political party leader arrested for superstition and witchcraft. This is something new and it is shameful for Seychelles,” he was quoted as saying at the time.

NDC must unite for victory – Abu Siddique

A policy analyst, Siddique Abubakar Suleiman has advised the leadership of the opposition NDC to lead a reconciliation drive to unite the party ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Although the party is working on its policies for Ghanaians, Siddique, a member of the party’s communication team, believes patching any cracks in the party will help the cause of the NDC.

In an article expressing his views, he urged that “It is crucial for us to join forces and ensure a fair and transparent electoral process, rejecting any form of electoral malpractice.”

He also called on former appointees to join the campaign of the party and sell to Ghanaians the message of hope the NDC and its flagbearer, John Mahama, wield for a resounding victory.

Below is his opinion.

Unite and Vote for Change:
Let’s Make Meaning of “Taka, Tika, Gangali” Victory in 2024

As Ghana approaches the 2024 elections, it is imperative for National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters and fellow Ghanaians to come together and work towards bringing about the change that the country desperately needs.

The NDC must prioritize internal reconciliation and unity at all levels to secure a decisive victory in the upcoming elections.

This advice aims to highlight the concerns surrounding the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) and emphasize the need for a united front to counter any attempts to manipulate the electoral process.

It is no secret that the NPP has resorted to dubious tactics in previous elections to retain power. Because the NPP feels defeated, they will start their lies on John Dramani Mahama but Ghanaians will not buy their lies this time as they mistakenly did in 2016.

As loyal supporters of the NDC, we must remain vigilant and prepared to counter any attempts by the NPP to “steal” the elections. It is crucial for us to join forces and ensure a fair and transparent electoral process, rejecting any form of electoral malpractice.

Under the leadership of Dr. Mahmud Bawumia, the NPP has failed to deliver on its promises from previous elections. Corruption and mismanagement have become rampant, making this one of the most corrupt governments in Ghana’s history.

The suffering of Ghanaians has increased, and the country’s economy has suffered. The NPP’s intentions and commitment to the welfare of Ghanaians are questionable, making it imperative for us to seek an alternative.

We must learn from our past successes, such as in 2008 when influential figures like Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings became a polling agent in her polling station in 2008 elections.
It’s incumbent on all former position holders in government to emulate such act and more.

By uniting at all levels and forming a cohesive force, we can replicate such successes and lead ourselves to victory in the upcoming elections.

Reconciliation at the regional, constituency, ward, and branch levels is essential to foster unity and cohesion within the party, ultimately strengthening our electoral campaign.

To secure success in 2024, we must effectively communicate our policies and plans to the electorate, presenting a clear alternative to the unfulfilled promises of the NPP.

By highlighting the failures of the incumbent government and showcasing our commitment to the welfare of Ghanaians, we can garner support and convince voters to vote for change.

Former MPs, ministers, DCEs, MCEs, MMDCEs, ambassadors, CEOs, and their deputies play a crucial role in the success of the NDC.

I call upon them to adopt a constituency and potentially serve as polling agents in their respective polling stations.

Their support and dedication in focusing on their constituencies and playing an active role in the party are invaluable in the lead-up to the 2024 elections.

I would like to commend the former chief of staff of Ghana, Mr. Julius Debrah, for availing his radio station and television network for all NDC members to use it to propagate the good works of JDM and the NDC.

Let us unite, forgive each other, and fight for the good of Ghana by electing John Dramani Mahama (JDM) as our leader.

JDM is the only alternative to bring about meaningful change and make Ghana work again.
Comrades this is not just about JDM; it is about our collective future.

Ghana is being torn apart by corruption and mismanagement under this corrupt NPP government.

Allowing them to continue in power would be a grave grave mistake for Ghanaians.
Together, we can create a brighter future for Ghana by voting wisely and ending this corrupt and very inept NPP government.

The upcoming 2024 elections present an opportunity for NDC supporters and Ghanaians to unite and bring about the change that our mother land desperately needs.

Let’s strengthen internal reconciliation, effectively communicating our policies, and countering any attempts at electoral manipulation, we can secure a decisive victory.
Let us unite, vote wisely, and create a brighter future for our beloved country.

As it stands now every sector of our economy is sick as such the only curer with the experience to cure the economy is John Dramani MAHAMA not the failed apprentice Bawumia who’s only experience is the current failure of the Ghanaian economy.

Siddique Abubakar Suleiman,
Ndc commucation member/policy analyst

Petrol, diesel to go up by 6.6%, 8.18% per litre tomorrow

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers, (COPEC) has projected an increase in fuel prices, beginning tomorrow, February 16, 2024.

According to COPEC, the price of petrol may go up by 6.63%, while that of diesel will increase by 8.18%.

Therefore, petrol will now sell between GH¢12.02 and GH¢13.29 per litre, from the previous GH¢11.87 per litre.

Diesel will now sell between GH¢13.21 and GH¢14.60 per litre from GH¢12.85 per litre.

The projected retail price of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) is expected to average at GH¢13.24 per kilogramme. According to COPEC, this is within ±5% margin of error.

The increment is as a result of the depreciation of the cedi during the period and rising price of finished petroleum products on the international market.

“The imminent increases are largely due to increases in price of petrol on the international market by about 1.75% whilst diesel goes up by 6.02% with crude price increasing by 1.39% from the mean price of $81.30/barrel to $82.43/barrel. The forex or dollar exchange rate has also increased by 2.16% from a previous average of GH¢12.01603 to GH¢12.4230 per $1”.

In addition to the above international price changes is the increase in local taxes of UPPF, Primary Distribution Margin (PDM) and BOST margin to the tune of 20 pesewas on a litre of petrol and diesel by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA).

COPEC maintained that the government should desist from the practice of increasing taxes and margins on all petroleum products as it is currently doing, adding, “this practice of sneaking in tax increases on the price build up only further increases the economic pressure on Ghanaians”.

Trust Mahama to fix Akufo-Addo’s economic mess – Ato Forson

Minority Leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has urged Ghanaians to have trust in the 2024 flag bearer of the NDC, John Mahama, and give him the mandate to lead the country and put Ghana’s economy on track.

The former Deputy Minister of Finance in an interview on TV XYZ said the only way this country can be saved from the economic mess created by the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia  in the past 7 years.

Ato Forson said the finances of the country under Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta borrowed heavily to put the country’s finances off gear which led the country under the auspices of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Currently, the citizens have kicked against the imposition of many taxes by the government ever since the IMF took over the country’s economy.

Reacting to the hardship and rising cost of living, the Minority leader said the damage that has been done by the NPP government is huge but his flag bearer, John Mahama is prepared to transform the country with his good policies.

“Although it will not be easy but we trust John Mahama to fix this country because he has the track record and has the requisite experience that can drive the country on the right path,” Ato Forson  said.

Speaking on his expectations about former president John Dramani Mahama’s governance, Dr Ato Forson told Kwame Minkahthat “If John Mahama is given the chance to rule, he will change the fortunes of this country”.

2 South African soldiers killed by a mortar explosion in eastern Congo amid unrest.

Two South African soldiers were killed and three injured when a mortar landed in their base in eastern Congo amid increased unrest in the region, the South African armed forces said Thursday.

The South African National Defence Force, which oversees all of the country’s armed forces, said it believed the mortar explosion on Wednesday was a result of “indirect fire” and an investigation was underway to determine who was responsible.

South Africa has sent soldiers to Congo as part of the Southern African Development Community’s mission to fight against armed rebel groups in the east.

South Africa announced this week it would be sending a new contingent of 2,900 soldiers to eastern Congo. It wasn’t immediately clear if those killed and injured were part of that new deployment.

The base that was hit was in the North Kivu province, South African National Defence Force spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini said. The injured were taken to a hospital in the city of Goma.

Violence in the conflict-hit region has increased in recent weeks, with many blaming attacks on the M23 rebel group that has been fighting Congolese soldiers in the region for years.

The Congo government says M23 is receiving military support from neighboring Rwanda, which Rwanda denies.

But M23 has indicated in recent statements that it is in the midst of a new advance in eastern Congo, leading to fears the group is again targeting Goma, which it once seized 10 years ago.

More than 1 million people have been displaced by the conflict since November, aid groups say. That adds to the 6.9 million who already fled their homes in one of the world’s biggest humanitarian crises.

On Thursday, the Norwegian Refugee Council said the recent advance of armed groups toward the key town of Sake, near Goma, “poses an imminent threat to the entire aid system” in eastern Congo.

“The isolation of Goma, home to over 2 million people and hosting hundreds of thousands of displaced individuals who have fled clashes with armed groups, would bring disastrous consequences to the region,” the NRC said.

Haiti says it is working on an agreement with Kenya to secure a long-awaited police deployment.

Haiti’s government announced Wednesday that it is working on an official agreement with Kenyan officials to secure the long-awaited deployment of a police force from the east African country.

High-ranking officials from both countries met in the U.S. for three days this week to draft a memorandum of understanding and set a deadline for the arrival of Kenyan police forces. The closed-door meetings included top U.S. officials and were held weeks after a court in Kenya blocked the U.N-backed deployment of police to help Haiti fight a surge in gang violence, saying it is unconstitutional.

It was not immediately clear if or how a memorandum of understanding could circumvent the court’s ruling, which the president of Kenya has said he would appeal.

Haiti’s government said in a statement that there were “intense discussions” to bring a memorandum of understanding into compliance with legislation of both countries.

“A final decision on the text should come early next week as well as its signature by both parties,” Haiti’s government said.

It said the talks also focused on the mission’s operations, logistics and compliance, as well as surveillance, required equipment and human rights issues.

The deployment was requested by Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry in October 2022 and approved by the U.N. Security Council a year later. But it has since encountered multiple legal obstacles as gang warfare in Haiti’s capital and beyond continues to rise.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk recently noted that more than 800 people were killed, injured or kidnapped across Haiti in January, more than three times the number compared with the same month in 2023.

New York City sues social media platforms over youth mental health crisis

New York City is suing a handful of social media networks, alleging their platforms’ designs exploit young users’ mental health and cost the city $100 million in related health programs and services each year.

In the lawsuit against TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and YouTube, the city of New York said the platforms are responsible for an uptick in mental health issues among young people, including depression and suicide ideation. These issues, the lawsuit states, impose a “large burden on cities, school districts and public hospital systems that provide mental health services to youth.”

The lawsuit comes shortly after executives from social media platforms faced tough questions from lawmakers during the latest congressional hearings over how their platforms may direct younger users – and particularly teenage girls – to harmful content, damaging their mental health and body image.

A growing number of families have sued social media companies, along with US states and municipalities, over the alleged impact on the mental health of their children. But during a press conference on Wednesday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said: “NYC is first major American city to take combined steps of this magnitude and call out the danger of social media clearly and directly just as the surgeon general did with tobacco and guns.”

New York City said it is seeking monetary damages and equitable relief to fund prevention education and mental health treatment.

The city also released a social media action plan that highlights how it plans to hold social media companies accountable, provide education and support to young people and families, and study the long-term impacts of social media on youth.

A Snap spokesperson told CNN the platform was “intentionally designed to be different from traditional social media” with a focus on helping users communicate with close friends and by opening up directly to the camera rather than a feed of content.

“While we will always have more work to do, we feel good about the role Snapchat plays in helping close friends feel connected, happy and prepared as they face the many challenges of adolescence,” the spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, Meta – the parent company of Instagram and Facebook – said it offers more than 30 tools and features to support them and their parents.

“We’ve spent a decade working on these issues and hiring people who have dedicated their careers to keeping young people safe and supported online,” a spokesperson said.

TikTok and YouTube did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Last month, Mayor Adams called social media a “public health hazard” and an “environmental toxin” during his State of the City address. The lawsuit also builds on last year’s Surgeon General warning that declared social media a “profound risk of harm” for kids.

While announcing the action plan, Adams said he’s increasingly concerned about the “dangerous” and “addictive” features that impact the lives of young people.

“Instead of talking to each other over lunch at the cafeteria, they are absorbed in screens,” he said. “Instead of playing at the park with friends, they are inside on a sunny day, clicking and scrolling. Instead of learning confidence and resilience, they’re being exposed to content that often leads to insecurity and depression.”

He said the move to sue these companies is “a bold action on behalf of millions of New Yorkers” to hold these companies accountable for their role in this crisis.

However, in the US, it’s very hard to sue social media platforms because of a 28-year-old federal law called “Section 230,” which holds that tech companies cannot be held liable for the content that users post to their platforms.

By contrast, under the EU’s Digital Service Act, companies can be sued for up to 6% of their worldwide revenues if they violate the law.

NDC Youth Wing procures projectors to play Bawumia’s failed promises to Ghanaians

The National Chairman of the Youth Working Committee of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Okai Mintah has procured projectors to be distributed to every NDC constituency office across the country to play back the unfulfilled promises of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to Ghanaians.

This is to help electorates make informed decisions and also know about the failure of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government ahead of the 2024 polls.

This was disclosed by the National Youth Organizer of the NDC, George Opare Addo in an interview with Mugabe Maase on Inside Politics on Power FM and TV XYZ.

Opare Addo labeled the flag bearer of the governing NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as a chronic liar who needs to be exposed to Ghanaians as the country prepares to hold elections later this year.

He said Bawumia, as a Running Mate of Akufo-Addo, in 2016, made a lot of promises to get the votes of  Ghanaian electorates but failed woefully in government to fulfil them but trying to run away from those promises, especially the health of the country’s economy.

He stated that one of the NDC’s strategy going into the elections is to remind Ghanaians of how Bawumia pledged to do a lot of things including stabilising the currency and inflation but has failed to do so,  resultng in untold hardship in the country.

Opare Addo argued that Bawumia has attempted to cover files of  his unfulfilled promises and hastened that the project would help expose the NPP flag bearer by replaying his old clips to Ghanaians.

Opare Addo further rubbished a claim by Bawumia in his address at UPSA on 7th February 2024, saying he is the one behind the digitalisation in the country.

“Bawumia claims he started digitalization but I am saying today that it is false.  NDC through the Ministry of Communication under Dr. Omane Boamah undertook many digitalization projects that brought us to where we are today . Ursula Owusu during her parliamentary vetting in 2017 praised Omane Boamah for the great work he did at the communication Ministry so how come he is claiming he should be credited with Ghana’s digitalisation drive?”

“This is the reason I’m very happy that the National Chairman of the youth wing working committee, Okai Mintah has taken this bold step to expose Bawumia big time,” he stated.

Opare Addo said the project has already commenced in the Eastern, North East and Savannah Regions to educate the people about the falsehoods being peddled by Dr Bawumia.

Kylian Mbappe to leave Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

France striker Kylian Mbappe has told Paris St-Germain he intends to leave the club at the end of the season.

The 25-year-old’s deal with the Ligue 1 champions is scheduled to expire and he has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid.

At one point, Mbappe was exiled from the first-team squad and left out of the club’s pre-season tour of Asia.

However, an agreement was reached that ensured PSG would not lose out when Mbappe eventually left and the terms of his now seemingly inevitable exit are still to be confirmed.

The forward has a one-year extension clause, so it is expected his departure will involve either a sale with a transfer fee or financial sacrifices on the player’s part.

Whilst PSG would have wanted Mbappe to remain at the club, his exit looks set to come as they aim to build a younger squad and move away from the ‘Galacticos’ plan, that has also seen Argentina forward Lionel Messi and Brazil international Neymar leave since the end of last season.

It is estimated Mbappe, who won the World Cup with France in 2018, earns around €200m per year (£171m).

PSG are 11 points clear of second-placed Nice at the top of the French league and will also play Nice in the quarter-finals of the domestic cup.

The French champions beat Real Sociedad 2-0 in the first leg of their last-16 Champions League encounter on Wednesday, with Mbappe scoring the opener.

It was his fourth goal in Europe’s top competition this season, while he has 20 goals in the domestic league in the present campaign.

Overall, he has 243 goals and 93 assists in 290 games for PSG and has helped the club to five Ligue 1 title wins.

Mbappe won a French top-flight title with Monaco before joining PSG as an 18-year-old in 2017, initially on loan before a 180m euro (£165.7m) move.

He scored 27 goals and registered 13 assists in 60 games for Monaco.

Mbappe was set to leave PSG on a free transfer at the end of the 2021-22 season but ultimately signed a two-year contract extension, with the option of a further year.

However, after Mbappe told PSG he would not agree to the additional 12 months of the deal, he was not selected for their pre-season tour to Japan last July.

He subsequently refused to meet with representatives of Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, who made a world-record £259m offer for him.

The striker later returned to first-team training following what PSG said were “very constructive and positive” talks.

Mbappe turned down a move to Real Madrid when he agreed to his current deal with PSG in May 2022.

He scored a hat-trick in the 2022 World Cup final but finished on the losing side as Argentina won on penalties, and Mbappe was subsequently appointed captain of France after Hugo Lloris retired from Les Bleus duty.
