Eric Opoku criticizes Govt for diverting GH¢1.5bn from DACF to purchase laptops for students

The Member of Parliament for Asunafo South, Eric Opoku, has accused the government of diverting an amount of GH¢750 million in 2023 from the District Assemblies Common Fund to be used in the purchase of laptops for onward distribution to SHS students.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, announced plans by the government to distribute over 1.4 million tablets to students of Wesley Girls Senior High School under the free SHS policy within the next two months to help improve teaching and learning in the school.

But the former Brong Ahafo Minister alleged that the government has planned to divert an additional GH¢750 million for the same purpose.

The Asunafo South MP said the diversion will stifle development at the district level.

“They [the government] took GH¢750 million from the Common Fund meant for the development of the assemblies and that is why most of the assemblies are not doing anything at all.

“And this year, they intend to add another GH¢750 million so that they will have GH¢1.5 billion for the purchase of those laptops,” he said in a Citi News interview.

Akufo-Addo’s reshuffle uninspiring; won’t address economic mess – Ato Forson

The Minority in Parliament has criticised President Akufo-Addo’s ministerial reshuffle, stating that the “injury time” cabinet shake-up will fix the country’s economic crisis.

Labelling the shake-up as lacking inspiration, Minority Leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson said n a press statement issued on Wednesday that it was belated and will not have any positive impact on the economy to assuage the plights of Ghanaians.

“It is also too little too late, coming barely nine months to the exit of the government. Neither will it solve the suffering and hardships confronting the people of Ghana as a result of the bad governance and massive uncontrolled corruption of the Akufo-Addo and Alhaji Bawumia’s government,” the Minority Leader argued.

“These injury time reserves, who have been on the bench for more than seven years without warm-up, cannot make any meaningful impact in the remaining nine months to salvage the sinking ship and the massive economic mess created by Alhaji Bawumia and his economic mismanagement team.”

Dr Ato Forson emphasised that the tenure of Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government has been characterised by excessive borrowing, unsustainable debt.

“The tenure of this government has been characterised by excessive borrowing, unsustainable debt, an economic crisis, high appetite for taxes, poor governance, reckless and wasteful expenditures, siphoning of state resources into private pockets of government appointees, as well as state capture by family and friends of the President and his Vice.”

Akufo-Addo’s reshuffle comes few months after the resignation of former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen and Agriculture Minister Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, who stepped down to concentrate on their political campaigns.

In accordance with the 1992 Constitution, the President formally notified the Speaker of Parliament of the government’s new composition on Tuesday, February 13.

New individuals have been appointed to ministerial positions, while others have been reshuffled to different ministries.

Reshuffle

One minister who was under constant fire to resign over the economic challenges, Ken Ofori-Atta was finally relieved of his duties in the shake-up.

Other ministers who have been in office since the beginning of the NPP’s government: Road Minister Kwasi Amoako-Atta and Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman Manu have also been relieved of their duties. Dr Okoe Boye replaces Agyeman Manu as Health Minister.

(L-R) Agyeman Manu, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Ken Ofori-Atta, Asenso Boakye

Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah was moved to the Works and Housing Ministry, while his deputy Fatimatu Abubakar takes over as the substantive Minister.

Francis Asenso Boakye moves to the Roads Ministry  as the substantive Minister.

Interior Minister Ambrose Dery has also been reassigned to the office of the President as Minister of State.

Deputy Energy Minister Andrew Egyapa Mercer has been assigned a new role as the Minister for Tourism and Creative Arts.

The recent reshuffle has impacted around 13 ministers of state, comprising 10 cabinet ministers and two regional ministers.

A press release from the presidency on Wednesday, February 14, catalogued the sacked ministers, those reassigned and newly appointed.

Dozens dead as two boats collide on the Congo River

Dozens of people are dead and several others are reported missing after two boats collided on the Congo River near Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Monday.

In dramatic images taken moments after they crashed into one another, horrified residents can be seen watching from the riverbank as small boats raced out in a bid to rescue passengers.

It was not immediately clear how many were saved or what caused the accident between the two boats which were loaded with people and goods.

Deadly boating accidents occur frequently as crews often overload the vessels.

Most river traffic is run by small informal operators, and officials have warned that adherence to maritime regulations is poor.

Imran Khan’s rivals PML-N and PPP reach deal to form government.

Nawaz Sharif and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s parties in Pakistan have reached a deal to form a government after last week’s disputed election.

Mr Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party said it would help Mr Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League elect a prime minister.

The two parties were previously in a coalition that ousted Imran Khan from power in 2022. He is now in jail.

This time independent candidates backed by his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) unexpectedly won the most seats.

PPP leader Asif Ali Zardari told a press conference that although his party and the PML-N had contested elections against each other, they had come together in the interests of the nation.

“It is not necessary that [we fight] forever,” Mr Zardari said.

The PML-N said in a statement that both parties had agreed to co-operate in the interests of political stability.

The results – in which independents backed by the PTI took 93 out of 266 directly-elected seats – had left voters uncertain about which parties would form the next government.

The PML-N won 75 seats while the PPP came third with 54 seats.

In addition, parties will be allocated more seats from the 70 reserved for women and non-Muslims. These additional seats are not available to independent candidates.

According to PML-N official Marriyum Aurangzeb, party leader Mr Sharif plans to nominate his brother Shehbaz to be prime minister. Both men have previously served as prime minister.

While Mr Bhutto says his party will help elect a PML-N prime minister, he earlier said it would not take any cabinet positions.

Imran Khan and his party have continued to emphasise that they believe the elections were rigged against them and plan to challenge the results.

Speaking to reporters in court for the first time since the vote, Khan said: “I warn against the misadventure of forming a government with stolen votes.

“Such daylight robbery will not only be a disrespect to the citizens but will also push the country’s economy further into a downward spiral.”

The authorities deny accusations of vote tampering.

Nigeria’s Access Bank appoints Bolaji Agbede after death of CEO

Access Bank, a prominent Nigerian financial institution, has named an interim CEO following the tragic demise of Herbert Wigwe, the CEO, who lost his life in a helicopter accident last Friday, along with five others.

In a recent statement, Access Holdings Plc, the parent company of Access Bank, revealed that Bolaji Agbede, the bank’s esteemed senior founding executive director, will step into the role of CEO on an acting basis.

Ms Agbede joined Access Bank in 2003 and has nearly 30 years of experience in banking and business consultancy, the company said as reported by the BBC.

the 57-year-old banker was on his way to Las Vegas to attend Sunday’s Super Bowl, local media reported.

Wigwe founded Access Bank in 1989 and has grown to become one of Nigeria’s largest banks in 2018 after it acquired its main competitor, Diamond Bank

Ivory Coast president rewards football team for their AFCON win.

Celebrations for Ivory Coast’s football team continued on Tuesday as the country marked its victory in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Players, coaches, and officials were received by head of state, Alassane Ouattara, for a reception at the Presidential Palace.

The victorious Elephants, African champions in 2023, received medals from Ouattara and each members of the squad received a monetary gift.

Today was about the president showing his gratitude and above all his confidence in this team, which showed bravery and resilience throughout the African Cup of Nations.

The hosts progression to the final seemed unlikely in the early stages of the competition, but the team fought back to defeat Nigeria 2-1 in the final on Sunday.

Brahim Díaz’s sumptuous solo strike gives Real Madrid edge over RB Leipzig.

Well, were you really expecting two perfect Real Madrid performances in a row? This is simply not how Madrid do things. They harness their energies, take as much pride in the ugly as the beautiful, do the next thing that is required of them. So after the evisceration of Girona came the last stand against RB Leipzig: a gruff, grizzled win in which they were forced to spend long periods defending, despite not really having many defenders to speak of.

Carlo Ancelotti called it a “collective job”, albeit one elevated by a single moment of grace. Brahim Díaz started this game as a replacement for the injured Jude Bellingham and ended it on the sidelines after sustaining an injury of his own. In between he produced the game’s only goal three minutes into the second half, a brilliant effort, and one that has given Madrid a decisive advantage going into the second leg at the Bernabéu.

Of course it helps when you have players who can manage a knockout tie as well as this, players who step up when needed. Players such as Andriy Lunin, in for Thibaut Courtois, who kept Madrid in front with two spectacular late saves and enjoyed what Ancelotti described as “his best ever game”. Players such as Toni Kroos, who was just ridiculously good again, a midfielder who was everywhere without ever seeming to run anywhere.

Beyond that, though, it was a largely even game, and if there was a note of regret for the home side it lay in those missed chances in the first half, the missed opportunities to force Madrid out of their comfort zone, to ignite their own faltering season. Had Benjamin Sesko put away one of the six chances of varying difficulty to come his way, Madrid could have few complaints. But in a way, those misses can be traced back to a chance he actually scored: perhaps the pivotal moment of the tie, coming less than two minutes in.

With Madrid regrouping after a corner, Sesko headed in Xaver Schlager’s miscued shot, only for the flag to go up. Sesko in fact was onside, but Benjamin Henrichs – who wasn’t – was judged to have interfered with Lunin, despite barely touching him. It was a soft decision, verging on gutless. “A goal that in my opinion should have counted,” according to the Leipzig coach, Marco Rose. And for a club fifth in the Bundesliga, struggling for form and lacking the simple exuberance that characterised so many of their best sides, it felt weirdly typical of their luck.

For these have been trying times at the headquarters of European football’s leading energy drink project. There has been talk of entropy, talk of crisis, talk about the ruthless Rasenball pressing machine not being what it was. Three defeats coming off the winter break had led to intense speculation over Rose’s future. And yet there was little of this frailty on show in the first half, in which Leipzig moved the ball smartly through midfield, cut Madrid open time and again, created numerous chances for the flailing Sesko.

It was only in the second half, as Leipzig chased the game, that the stress began to tell. There were still openings, still long spells of pressure, but too many poor decisions, too many hesitations. Xavi Simons started well until Madrid began to cut his supply, and the talented Loïs Openda struggled to influence the play. Aurélien Tchouaméni – a midfielder reassigned temporarily to the backline – was outstanding in this regard, his mobility and speed bailing out Madrid time and again. “I told him he played there because it was an emergency,” Ancelotti joked. “Now I have to find another excuse.”

By which point Madrid were ahead. Increasingly Díaz had been tacking towards the right flank, targeting the space behind David Raum, and now he cut inside from that side, staying on his feet despite Raum’s attempt to chop him down.

The finish was left-footed, sumptuous and curled into the top corner: the sort of goal that looks transcendent from any angle. For a player who has had to be patient for his minutes since returning from a three‑year loan at Milan, this was another sign of a rapidly improving talent, growing in confidence as well as game intelligence.

And ultimately Madrid will take this: another step into the known known, a spring in which they will hope to wrap up La Liga quickly and throw all their efforts into the one competition they crave above all others. The unfortunate injury to Díaz was a blow, piling even more pressure on the front two of Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo. Bellingham should be back for the second leg, and on this evidence Madrid may just need him a little more than they realised.

Manchester City resumed their Champions League title defence with win over FC Copenhage.

Manchester City resumed their Champions League title defence with a comfortable victory at FC Copenhagen in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

After Kevin de Bruyne gave Pep Guardiola’s side an early lead it looked like they would go on to claim a big win as the hosts barely laid a glove on them.

Bernardo Silva put Manchester City ahead again just before half-time with a clever flick after a ball from De Bruyne deflected through to him.

De Bruyne and Erling Haaland had further chances to add to the lead after the break and, although City were not quite at their attacking best, they ensured they left with a two-goal cushion thanks to Phil Foden’s late strike.

“The biggest players appear on the biggest stages,” said Guardiola on TNT Sports. “It’s the hour of truth. We started well. We have to do our job and finish it.

“I’m just really pleased for the result.”.

Manchester City will host Copenhagen in the second leg on Wednesday, 6 March.

This was Copenhagen’s first game in two months after football in Denmark was paused for a winter break but Guardiola had warned before the game that they would still not make things easy for his side.

The Danes had beaten Manchester United 4-3 at the Parken Stadium in the Champions League group stage back in November, and also held Manchester City to a goalless draw there in 2022.

Guardiola’s side started like a train, but while they failed to sustain that momentum they did have plenty of chances to win by a greater margin.

However, ex-Liverpool goalkeeper Kamil Grabara played a key role in limiting the visitors to two goals, making good saves to deny Ruben Dias early on and Jeremy Doku in the second half.

But in the closing stages, the visitors stepped it up again to ensure they got a healthy advantage for the second leg and secured it when Foden drove in from De Bruyne’s cutback.

“Today was perfect,” Guardiola added. “They were patient in the right moments. Really good.

“I’m really proud of the team. The third goal helped us a lot. Hopefully we can finish it off at home and go to the next game.”

Manchester City’s early momentum was clearly disrupted by the early departure of Jack Grealish to injury.

The England forward was making his first start in six games but pulled up with what appeared to be a muscle injury after challenging for the ball with Diogo Goncalves.

Grealish, who missed three games in September with a hamstring injury, was then taken off in the 21st minute and City will be hoping the issue is not as bad as it initially looked.

“It looks like a muscular [injury] for Jack Grealish,” Guardiola said.

“It is a pity. He helped us to play at the right tempo. He felt it when he rolled on the grass.”

Guardiola also revealed Silva picked up an injury, adding: “Bernardo took a big knock on the ankle. Hopefully it is not a big issue, but we will see.”

Jeff Bezos sells shares worth over $4bn in Amazon.

Multi-billionaire Jeff Bezos has sold more of his shares in Amazon, bringing the total value of sales in recent days to more than $4bn (£3.2bn).

The technology giant, which Mr Bezos founded in 1994, said he has sold 24 million Amazon shares this month.

Mr Bezos, who is the firm’s executive chair, last sold Amazon shares in 2021.

Earlier this month, the company said he was planning to sell 50 million shares over the next year, which are worth around $8.4bn at current prices.

The first sale of 12 million shares was announced in a regulatory filing on Friday, followed by an announcement on Tuesday of the sale of another 12 million shares.

Mr Bezos has also given away shares in Amazon as part of his philanthropy, most recently in 2022.

\As Mr Bezos moved to Miami in Florida from Seattle in Washington last year, he will save around $280m in tax on the $4bn worth of stock he has sold.

Gains above $250,000 from the sale of shares or other long term investments, are taxed at 7% in Washington state. Florida does not have state taxes on incomes or capital gains.

However, he will still be liable to federal taxes as a result of selling the shares.

When Mr Bezos announced his move to Florida it prompted speculation over whether it was because of a potential tax bill he would have faced in Washington after the state approved a new tax on large stock sales.

His sales of Amazon shares come after they have risen by almost 70% in the past year.

Mr Bezos said in November that his parents had recently moved back to Miami where he spent some of his childhood and that he wanted to be close to them and to his Blue Origin space project, which was “increasingly shifting to Cape Canaveral”.

“Lauren and I love Miami,” he wrote on Instagram, referring to his fiancée Lauren Sánchez.

“For all that, I’m planning to return to Miami, leaving the Pacific Northwest,” he added.

Mr Bezos remains Amazon’s biggest shareholder and is one of the richest people in the world, with an estimated fortune of more than $190bn.

Major “Valentine’s Day” ministerial reshuffle expected Wednesday

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is expected to announce his most radical Ministerial reshuffle since he took office on 7 January 2017. The announcement of the changes to the line-up of ministers, our Jubilee House sources say, is scheduled for Wednesday (14 February, Valentine’s Day).

This Tuesday afternoon witnessed several movements to the fourth floor of Jubilee House by ministers expected to be affected and other MPs expected to benefit from the ministerial changes.
The president, as required by the 1992 constitution, will submit the list of ministerial appointments to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, and the appointments will be announced on the floor of Parliament.

President Akufo-Addo will be travelling out of the country to Europe tomorrow, Valentine’s Day, on an official engagement in the Federal Republic of Germany. The list should be delivered to the Speaker tomorrow.

Asaase News sources close to the Presidency say that up to 12 current, substantive ministers of state may be affected, including ten cabinet ministers and two regional ministers.

Asaase News sources on the third and fourth floors of Jubilee House confirm that some very big names will be among those dropped from their positions as ministers of state. While some may be dropped completely, others are expected to be reshuffled.

It is also anticipated that about seven deputy ministers will lose out. The biggest beneficiaries are expected to be backbenchers from the Majority side of the House, several of whom will fill the vacant slots.
Reports say President Akufo-Addo has met all the ministers and deputy ministers who may be shifting places, leaving, or joining his government in the upcoming reshuffle.

Sources on the fourth floor of Jubilee House also say there is talk of a possible reshuffle of the leaders of the Majority in Parliament. This change, one source says, will follow a planned meeting between the leadership of the ruling New Patriotic Party and the presidency, to take place soon.
