Farming is my life, and it’s my retirement plan – Mahama

President-elect John Mahama has expressed his deep passion for farming, stating that it remains central to his life and will be his primary focus upon retirement.

During a visit to his farm in Yapei and Busunu in the Savannah region, Mr. Mahama shared insights into his agricultural pursuits and his long-term plans.

“Farming is my life. I love it, and I’m sure if I didn’t go into politics, I would have been a full-time farmer,” he revealed.

“In any case, when I retire, after this stint, of course, I’m going to go into full-time farming. If you want to see me, you’ll have to come to the farm.”

The former president, who has diversified into crop farming and livestock, showcased his growing agricultural enterprise.

“We started with 300 goats and other small ruminants, and now we’ve grown to almost 500, with another 200 animals added recently. It’s looking positive,” he said, noting plans to expand into sheep and cattle farming.

On the crop side, Mahama’s farm produces maize and soybean, supplying directly to Asutuare farms for poultry feed.

He highlighted the challenges of balancing his political duties with his love for the land.

“This is not just a business; it’s a way of life for me. It’s therapeutic and fulfilling to work on the farm,” Mahama added, showcasing his dedication to agriculture as both a passion and a means of contributing to Ghana’s food security.

Lordina Foundation supports Gambaga Witches Camp ahead of Christmas

The women in the Gambaga ‘witches’ camp have lauded Mrs Lordina Dramani Mahama and her Lordina Foundation for being a reliable support system for the camp over the years.

In addition to regular donations, Mrs Mahama has also in the past facilitated the presentation of a vehicle and started work on an accommodation and skills training facility for the camp.

On Friday, the Foundation visited the camp and presented food and essential items to beneficiaries of the Go Home Project. After the presentation, Board Secretary Priscilla Santuo-Ocrah extended warm greetings from the Foundation’s president.

“Mama Lordina loves you all and is always ready to support you to ensure your comfort,” she added.

Madam Santuo-Ocrah emphasised that the Foundation’s motto, “The more we share, the more we have,” is its guiding principle. The foundation believes in sharing its resources to bring smiles to as many faces as possible.

“I know these items will not solve all your problems, but I believe they will make a significant difference,” she noted.

The items presented included bags of rice, cartons of cooking oil, canned tomatoes, malt drink, fruit juice, milo beverage, bottled water, Tom Brown, Gari mix, spaghetti, tissue paper, and detergents. Each beneficiary also received a piece of cloth and a bar of chocolate.

The coordinator for the Go Home Project, Reverend Gladys Lariba, expressed excitement and thanked Mrs Mahama for the donation and support. She acknowledged that Mrs Mahama and her foundation have played a critical role in running the camp over the years, with regular donations occurring two or three times a year.

She mentioned that an accommodation facility started before the last National Democratic Congress left office had been abandoned. She expressed hope that work would resume soon to provide the women with decent and dignified housing while they waited to reintegrate with their families.

Reverend Lariba also thanked the Foundation for providing a vehicle that assisted them with their sensitisation programmes and transporting beneficiaries to access healthcare and other needs.

She also called for the implementation of the Anti-Witchcraft Bill, which was passed a few years ago, to sensitise Ghanaians and prevent further instances of elderly women being expelled from their homes due to witchcraft accusations.

The “Go Home Project” is an initiative of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana aimed at correcting the stigmatisation of elderly women in the “Gambaga witches camp.”

SHS heads demand payment of outstanding funds before reopening of schools

The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) is demanding the payment of outstanding funds to senior high schools across the country.

In a press release issued on Friday, December 21, the heads of the schools called on the government to settle all outstanding bills to enable them to run their schools effectively.

According to CHASS, although the government has released some funds to certain schools, these disbursements have not fully addressed critical issues.

“While we acknowledge some recent disbursements of funds to schools, we regret to inform you that this release has not fully resolved the critical financial needs of our institutions,” the statement noted.

CHASS pointed out that some of the funds the government owes to schools include arrears for perishable items, funds for day schools and single-track schools, funds for transporting food items from distribution centres to schools, funds for essential utility bills, and recurrent funding for the schools.

The headteachers noted that the situation has posed a “serious threat to the smooth operation of schools.”

They are therefore calling on the government to urgently pay all outstanding bills to the schools. They emphasized that “These funds are critical for the successful reopening of schools in January,” adding that “without these resources, school heads will face insurmountable challenges in managing daily operations.”

The statement further warned that the government’s failure to pay the funds would result in poor management of the nation’s secondary institutions and negatively impact students’ well-being.

CHASS has also threatened to take action regarding the reopening of schools in January 2025.

“We will advise against the resumption of the academic calendar,” the statement concluded, “should the government fail to disburse the funds.”

We reject EC’s ‘illegal, manipulated’ parliamentary results – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly rejected the re-collated parliamentary election results declared by the Electoral Commission (EC).

The re-collation process which took place at the EC’s Greater Accra Regional office on Saturday, December 21, saw five out of nine parliamentary results declared in favour of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a statement issued by the General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the party described the declaration as “illegal, manipulated, and a betrayal of Ghana’s democratic principles.”

They accused the EC, led by Jean Mensa, of undermining the integrity of the electoral process and compromising its mandate to serve the people fairly.

“The NDC strongly condemns these undemocratic practices and reminds all involved that electoral crimes have no expiry date and that the date of reckoning would come,” portions of the statement noted.

According to the NDC, the EC’s actions amount to an “assault on democracy,” facilitated by alleged collusion with the police and military.

Military to be deployed as EC resumes re-collation of results

The National Election Security Task Force has confirmed the deployment of military personnel to assist the police in maintaining security at collation centres as the Electoral Commission (EC) prepares to resume the collation of results for the outstanding constituencies from the December 7 elections.

The move comes in response to criticisms from the EC, which accused the task force of failing to provide adequate security during the earlier stages of the collation process. This, the EC noted, had resulted in the abrupt suspension of the exercise.

Addressing the media on Friday, December 20, the Director of Public Affairs for the Ghana Police Service and spokesperson for the election security task force, ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, emphasized the importance of maintaining order at the collation centres.

She urged political actors to refrain from inciting their supporters to converge at these locations, warning that such actions could escalate tensions and undermine the integrity of the process.

NDC seeks stay of High Court ruling on Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Others

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has filed an application to stay the High Court’s ruling regarding the re-collation of parliamentary results for Nsawam Adoagyiri, Okaikwei Central, and seven other disputed constituencies.

The High Court on December 20, ordered the Electoral Commission (EC) to re-collate and announce the results for the Ablekuma North and Nsawam Adoagyiri constituencies, nullifying earlier announcements.

The directive followed a judicial review initiated by six dissatisfied New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidates, who sought a mandamus order compelling the EC to re-collate and announce the election results.

They also requested a directive for the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to provide adequate security at collation centres to enable the EC to carry out its constitutional duties without interference.

The candidates, who contested in Tema Central, Nsawam Adoagyiri, Okaikwei Central, Techiman South, Ablekuma North, and Ahafo Ano North, highlighted irregularities in the results collation process and subsequent announcements of winners.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) attempted to join the case by filing a motion for a joinder, but the Court dismissed the motion, ruling that the NDC lacked sufficient grounds for inclusion.

However, in an application filed at the Supreme Court, the NDC is seeking an order to quash the High Court’s ruling and restrain the EC from re-collating the results.

“The Court take notice that Godwin Kudzo Tamekloe Esq Counsel for the Applicant herein will move this Honourable Court for an order of stay of execution OR suspension of the orders of the High Court (General Jurisdiction 13), Accra, Coram Reverend Joseph Adu-Owusu Agyemang J dated 20 December 2024 pending the hearing of the Applicants’ application invoking the supervisory jurisdiction of the Honourable Court upon the grounds stated in the accompanying affidavit and for any further order(s) as the Honourable Court may deem fit.

The NDC argued that the High Court committed a non-jurisdictional error of law by failing to exercise its powers under Order 55 rule 5 (2) of C.I 47.

“The High Court committed a non-jurisdictional error of law by failing to exercise its powers under Order 55 rule 5(2) of C.I 47 to direct the 2nd to 6th interested parties to serve the mandamus applications on the Applicants who have interests in the subject of dispute: Error of law apparent on the face of the record which error of- law occasioned a substantial miscarriage of justice.”

‘Wicked’ NPP should not taste power anytime soon – Asiedu Nketiah

The NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has urged Ghanaians to trust the incoming John Mahama government to serve them adequately.

Although he said the outgoing NPP led by Nana Akufo-Addo has created unprecedented mess in the country, the incoming NDC is poised to work in the interest of the masses.

The NDC leader who is on a ‘thank you tour’ of his home region –Bono– has been talking about the need to retain NDC in power for a long time to rebuild what the outgoing Government, led by President Nana Akufo-Addo and Dr Bawumia have collapsed.

Appreciating the people for voting convincingly for the NDC Presidential candidate, HE John Mahama and the party’s parliamentary candidates, Asiedu Nketiah said the people of Bono do not need to go back to the NPP since the party did not prioritize their needs while in power.

Addressing a crowd at Sunyani, the capital of Bono, the NDC leader emphasized that the appreciation of the NDC’s votes in the region during the recent elections indicates the people have been enlightened and need proper representation in government.

“Before 2020 elections, we had only one out of twelve seats in Parliament. When I became the National Chairman, we increased our seats to 6.

“Through our collective hard work, we won 11 seats out of the 12 in the entire region. And for the first time, we won the two Sunyani seats which had been occupied by the NPP for many years,” he said while appreciating the efforts of the people.

To him, since the NPP MPs, Amewu Cheremeh of Sunyani East and Ignatius Baffour Awuah of Sunyani West took the people for granted for many years, the NPP needs not be tolerated by the people in future elections.

“We have to take hold of these seats for a very long time because the NPP and the elephant do not think about your progress,” Asiedu chastised.

“That is the reason we killed (defeated) the elephant nationwide and had to come and slaughter it here in Sunyani (by winning their traditional seats)” he mocked.

Asiedu Nketiah’s tour also took him to Berekum East and West constituencies which hitherto were traditional seats for the NPP.

He also met the chiefs and people of Tain, his home constituency on Saturday.

He is expected to visit the remaining 7 constituencies within the weekend.

Mr Asiedu was accompanied by former Ashanti Regional Minister and National Vice Chairman, Dr Samuel Sarpong, the Bono Regional Chairman of the NDC, Ambassador Nyamekye Marfo, former MP for Akwatia, Baba Jamal and a host of regional and constituency executives.

IGP Dampare being threatened with removal by Akufo – Addo – another agenda setting by Dampare supporters— ACP Dr Benjamin Agordzo

Social media is awash with allegations that the Akufo-Addo government is harassing and threatening to remove IGP Dampare for one reason or the other. While I respect the writers and their opinions, I wish to state as follows:

1. I don’t believe that Akufo-Addo has any intention to remove Dr Dampare. That’ll be too suicidal. Dampare has his own issues which has caused the NPP government police votes in the just ended elections. Some of us cautioned the government but they didn’t taj us serious. This same Akufo-Addo Addo has protected Dampare despite the unprecedented internal wranglings against Dampare in the GPS. So, I cannot believe that they would even dream about that now.

2. Rather, I believe that this is one of the usual “tricks” of Dr. Dampare and his supporters to get the attention of the President-elect to keep him in office.

3. Interestingly, the supporters of Dampare are quick to point out that since there is a suit in the SC against the removal of security chiefs, the President-elect cannot change Dampare. So it’s no longer the issue of NPP harassing Dampare, but the fact that Dampare supporters would do anything to keep Dampare in office, right?

4. Were we not in this country when Akufo-Addo signed e-levy despite a SC suit pending? What did we do? Have we not been paying e-levy since?

5. Nothing can stop the removal of Dr Dampare, unless the President-elect decides not to remove him. The pendency of that suit at the SC, in my respectful opinion, cannot in anyway prevent the president from removing Dampare.

6. In any case, why should a president-elect trust an IGP whose alleged private conversation with an outgoing president is allegedly leaked to the public?

7. Dampare has so many questions to answer ranging from alleged extrajudicial killings, misapplication of funds, high-handedness and bastardisation of police processes and procedures in favour of his cronies. These and many other issues in the GPS have pitched greater majority of GPS personnel gainst any government that supports Dampare, which was exhibited in the recents special voting.

8. Should this agenda setting by Dampare supporters succeed, the President-elect would be losing the police constituency right from the day of assuming office. In my respectful opinion, this won’t help the President-elect.

EC’s ‘useless’ presser targeted at reducing NDC’s parliamentary strength – Omane Boamah

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed strong disapproval of a recent press conference held by the Electoral Commission (EC) Chair, Jean Mensah, describing it as an attempt to undermine the party’s two-thirds majority in Parliament.

In a statement shared on social media, the NDC’s Director of Elections and IT, Dr Edward Omane Boamah accused the EC of being influenced by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and questioned the motives behind the press briefing.

The party alleged that the move was part of a calculated effort to dilute their parliamentary strength.

“This useless press conference by Jean Mensah has obviously been instructed by the NPP to dilute the two-thirds majority of the NDC.

But she will fail!” the statement read.

The NDC also criticized the EC Chair for allegedly avoiding critical questions by not convening an emergency Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting.

The party emphasized that proper procedures must be followed to ensure transparency and accountability in the electoral process.

“At all constituencies where the declaration was not done, the EC must produce pink sheets that show the NDC won.

Instead of agreeing with our demand for an emergency IPAC meeting, she has decided to hide,” the statement continued.

The NDC reiterated its commitment to defending its parliamentary victories and maintaining vigilance over the electoral process.

It urged its supporters and Ghanaians to remain watchful, employing the hashtag #EAGLEEYES to underscore the need for continuous scrutiny.

The statement concluded with a call for action against perceived injustices:
“Organise, don’t agonise!”

The Society in a statement expressed that Mahama’s victory indicates the trust Ghanaians have for his leadership, urging him to restore the integrity of state institutions.

Below is a statement signed by Deputy Secretary of the Law Society of Ghana, David Worwui-Brown (ESQ)
