The Good Governance Advocacy Group (GGAG), together with its Executive Director, Listowell Nana Kusi Poku, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to urgently cancel the contract between the National Lottery Authority (NLA) and Digital Technology firm KGL Group.
KGL Group signed a 10-year partnership agreement with the NLA, effective January 2022, granting it exclusive rights to operate the NLA’s 5/90 online lottery game as a collaborator for the duration of the contract.
However, speaking at a press conference in Accra, Mr. Kusi alleged that the agreement is marred by corruption and primarily serves the interests of a few individuals at the expense of the state.
He accused KGL of effectively privatizing NLA operations, thereby weakening government oversight and diminishing the financial benefits to the state.
“The state capture under the previous administration must come to an end for the John Mahama administration to rake in more revenue for development,” Mr. Kusi stated.
He recalled that the NLA, formerly the Department of National Lotteries, came under increased scrutiny following the appointment of Mr. Osei Ameyaw as Director-General in 2017 under President Akufo-Addo’s administration an era later overshadowed by corruption allegations.
Mr. Kusi also cited continued irregularities under the subsequent leadership of Sammy Awuku.
“NLA is virtually collapsed. KGL is running the show, and the government is no longer getting its due.
While Ghanaians stake daily, the government doesn’t receive the full amount owed it. KGL now controls the NLA and reportedly generates not less than 10 million cedis daily through this setup,” Mr. Kusi claimed.
He urged President Mahama to take immediate steps to dissolve the agreement, emphasizing the need to restore transparency and accountability at the NLA.
