Tensions in Israel: 922 Ghanaians set for evacuation

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced on June 16, 2025, that 922 Ghanaian nationals, including 65 university students, have been identified in Israel and are poised for evacuation as the Israel–Iran conflict intensifies.

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Ministry is actively engaging Israeli authorities for evacuation clearance, amid emergency conditions and border closures that are stalling immediate efforts.

While evacuations from Iran have commenced without incident, Ghanaians in Israel remain safe, with the embassy ensuring access to bomb shelters and maintaining open communication lines to provide timely updates and guidance.

In a second update posted on X by Minister Ablakwa, he emphasized.

“With Israeli authorities declaring a state of emergency and closing all borders, an evacuation from Israel cannot be carried out now except with the express authorization of Israeli authorities. Ghana is pursuing those approval options.”

He further affirmed that the Government’s Emergency Evacuation Plan for Israel is ready to be activated immediately once formal clearance is secured.

The Ghanaian government has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding citizens caught in conflict zones, with diplomatic efforts underway to secure Israeli clearance for a coordinated evacuation.

In the meantime, interim protective measures including access to bomb shelters and active communication channels are being maintained.

Authorities stress that every step is being taken to ensure the safe return of Ghanaian nationals as soon as conditions permit.

With nearly a thousand Ghanaians at stake, including students, the government is navigating complex restrictions in Israel while already evacuating nationals from Iran.
