Gov’t pumps GHS 30m into cultural tourism; pledges to fix Accra–Cape Coast road

Government has injected over GHC30 million from the Tourism Development Fund into cultural tourism to boost festivals and creative industries across the country.

The announcement was made by Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, Policy Advisor at the Office of the Vice President, during the 61st Oguaaman Fetu Afahye in Cape Coast, where he represented Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

“Our tourism sector, strengthened by strategic investments through the Ghana Tourism Development Company and the Tourism Development Fund, is ensuring that festivals such as the Fetu Afahye remain both cultural sanctuaries and engines of economic growth,” Dr. Ampofo said.

The government delegation, including GTA CEO Maame Efua Houadjeto and Cape Coast South MP George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, also presented assorted items and cash to support the festival.

Osabarima Kwesi Atta II, Paramount Chief of Oguaa Traditional Area, expressed gratitude and called for collective action to drive development.

Dr. Ampofo further assured residents that government is prioritising rehabilitation of the Accra–Cape Coast road, describing the current condition as “almost a nightmare.”

He said the project falls under President Mahama’s “Big Push” agenda for roads, which seeks to ease transportation challenges in the Central Region.

Meanwhile, Central Regional Minister Eduamoah Ekow Panyin Okyere disclosed plans to establish a free zone enclave in the region to attract investment beyond Accra and create jobs.
