Chief of Staff touts Ghana’s democratic journey, offers blueprint for sustainability

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has called for stronger institutions and respect for constitutional principles as t`he foundation for sustaining Ghana’s enviable democratic record.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 6th Democracy Dialogue, organized by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, in Accra, Mr. Debrah said Ghana’s democratic resilience has been built on respect for the rule of law, peaceful transfers of power, and the independence of civil society.

“Ghana stands as an enduring example of democratic resilience and progress. Our journey has not been without its bumps and trials, but our unwavering commitment to constitutionalism, the peaceful transfer of power, and the rule of law has always seen us through.

We are proud of our vibrant civil society, our fiercely independent media, and our consistent effort to resolve political disputes through dialogue and judicial processes,” he said.

Mr. Debrah urged African leaders to respect term limits, empower young people to defend democratic rights, and shield electoral bodies, the judiciary, and anti-corruption agencies from political interference.

He emphasized the need for leaders to prioritize national interest over partisan gain, a point he said President Mahama consistently reinforces.

“The call to action from this Democracy Dialogue 2025 is clear: we must be eternally vigilant.

We must collectively guard our democracies against subtle machinations that seek to undermine them. Our collective future depends on it,” he concluded.
