NACOC Director-General pays courtesy call on Aflao paramount chief

The Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), Brig. Gen. Maxwell Obuba Mantey, together with his Deputy Director-General in charge of Enforcement, Lawyer Alexander Twum-Berimah, and other management members, on Friday paid a courtesy call on the Paramount Chief of the Aflao Traditional Area, HRM Torgbuga Adzonugaga Amenya Fiti V.

The visit formed part of NACOC’s stakeholder engagement to rally traditional leaders in the fight against illicit drug trafficking and abuse, particularly among the youth.

Brig. Gen. Mantey commended the traditional council for its support and urged the Paramount Chief to join hands with NACOC in curbing the menace.

“NACOC is always ready to partner with all stakeholders to help control drug trafficking and abuse. Ghana needs the next generation to be healthy and productive,” he stated.

HRM Torgbuga Adzonugaga Amenya Fiti V welcomed the outreach, noting that Aflao and its environs had become vulnerable to drug trafficking due to unapproved routes and cross-border activities.

He described the situation as a growing security concern, compounded by reports of some security personnel allegedly aiding and abetting traffickers.

“It is sad to note that all manner of illicit drugs can be found in Aflao. Smuggling at the border, especially along the beaches, is alarming and needs urgent attention,” he said.

The Paramount Chief called for stronger collaboration between NACOC, security agencies, and traditional authorities, as well as intensified public education, to stem the tide of drug abuse and trafficking.
