The 2025 WASSCE provisional results, released by WAEC on Saturday, have triggered serious concerns after a sharp increase in outright failures in two core subjects.
Nearly one in four candidates failed Core Mathematics and Social Studies.
The 2025 WASSCE recorded a sharp decline in performance, particularly in core subjects. Only 48.73% of candidates passed Core Mathematics (down from 66.86% in 2024), with 26.77% failing, while Social Studies pass rates fell to 55.82% and 27.50% failed.
Failures also rose in Integrated Science (16.05%) and English Language (12.86%), marking the weakest showing in four years.

Exam integrity issues were widespread: 6,295 candidates had results cancelled for bringing unauthorized materials, 653 for mobile phone possession, and 35 educational personnel faced sanctions or prosecution.
Analysts describe the results as a “wake-up call,” citing learning disruptions, under-resourced schools, and systemic weaknesses.
Calls for action include strengthening core subject teaching, expanding remedial programmes, reviewing teacher and resource allocation, and intensifying enforcement against malpractice.
Meanwhile, WAEC has urged parents, students and stakeholders to ignore unscrupulous individuals promising to “upgrade” results, emphasising that the only legitimate results are those accessible via the official WAEC portal.
If you like, I can also pull up regional breakdowns, i.e., which regions recorded the highest pass or failure rates, to see if some parts of Ghana were hit harder than others.
