NDC will win by 52% if the polls were held today – Asiedu Nketia

The National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has stated that the NDC will emerge victorious if the national elections were held today.

According to him, while the party is certain about victory, it is primarily concerned about ensuring a transparent electoral process without disruptions.

Speaking to JoyNews on Thursday, May 23, he said, “Our message has been accepted. The two parties have been tried. There are opinion polls that have been churned out and everything points to a one-touch victory for NDC. But as has been said by some Russian president that, those who vote decide nothing but those who count the vote decide everything.”

“So we are focusing on those who will be counting the vote and those who will be providing security to make sure that elections proceed uninterrupted. So that is where our focus is.”

Mr Nketia stated that multiple credible polls, apart from the local ones, support the NDC’s projected victory.

“That is the source of our confidence. We are winning 52% as of this month. If free and fair elections should be conducted, we should win 52% and that is a one-touch win.”

The NDC National Chairman called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to address concerns regarding the missing Biometric Verification Readers (BVRs).

He argued that the EC should be transparent and respond to the demands, as doing so would resolve outstanding disagreements and restore confidence in the electoral processes.

“They have every capacity to respond to those demands without creating any problems. The fact that they are refusing to open up is a source of worry and it will continue to be a source of worry. I think that, if they don’t have anything to hide, opening up would have resolved this matter a long time ago,” Mr Nketia added.

SC gives AG 7 days to file statement over appointment of security heads

The Supreme Court has given the Attorney-General seven days to file his statement of case in the suit in which Policy think Tank Imani Ghana is challenging the propriety of the appointment of some heads of the various uniformed security agencies by the executive.

The case which was called today, Thursday, May 23 was heard by Justice Samuel Asiedu.

In the writ filed in association with security analyst, Prof Kwesi Aning, the plaintiffs are asking the apex court to issue a declaration that upon a true and proper interpretation of the letter and spirit of Articles 200, 202(1), 202(2), 202(3), 205, 207(1), 207(2), 207(3), 190(1), 191,196, 199, and 269 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, the President of the Republic of Ghana has no authority to terminate the appointment or removal from office heads of the agencies unless only upon proven stated misconduct or misbehaviour established against these office holders.

These offices included the office of the Chief Fire Officer of the Fire Service; Inspector General of Police; Director General of Prisons Service and Comptroller General of Immigration Service.

Again, the two are seeking a declaration that …”The President of the Republic of Ghana upon assumption of Office does not have the power to make a fresh appoint to the office of the Chief Fire Officer of the Fire Service; Inspector General of Police; Director General of Prisons Service and Comptroller General of the Immigration Service unless the immediate holder of the office is deceased…”.

They are also seeking relief that the appointment of the heads of these uniformed security services by a new president who has been voted into power and sworn into office is unconstitutional.

Providing more details to back their case, the two argued that there are concerning trends where new governments compel the termination of the appointment of these heads while disregarding their constitutional rights.

“In some cases, these removals occur before the individual occupants of the office reach the statutory retirement age.

For instance, in 2017 the then Director-General of the Prisons Service, Mr. Emmanuel Yao Adzator was asked to proceed on leave at the age of 54 and subsequently another was appointed in his stead,” the suit said.

They are, therefore, demanding a consequential order to restrain or prevent the President of the Republic from dismissing or removing or attempting to dismiss or remove the appointment of persons occupying the offices of the Chief Fire Officer of the Fire Service; Inspector General of Police; Director-General of Prisons Service, Comptroller General of Immigration Service unless only in cases of proven and stated misconduct or misbehaviour established against such persons or upon retirement or resignation or death or incapacity to perform the functions of the office because of infirmity of body and mind.

The NPP Chairman was sworn into office on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, by the Minister of Energy, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, at a brief ceremony held at the ministry.

In a post on his Facebook wall, the Energy Minister expressed confidence in the ability of Mr Ntim to lead the board.

“[The] National Chairman of my beloved New Patriotic Party, Mr Ntim is not new to leadership and therefore, I have no doubt that, he has what it takes to steer the NPA to achieve its objectives for the benefit of all Ghanaians,” he wrote.

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh further “charged the new chairman of the downstream regulator to focus on key priorities; strengthening regulatory frameworks, enhancing operational efficiencies, and ensuring that the NPA operates with the highest standards of integrity and accountability.”

Profile of Stephen Ntim

As an NPP veteran, he has served the party in various capacities.

Election 2024: I’ll revamp TOR if elected president – Mahama

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to revamp the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) if he is elected president in the upcoming December 7 general elections

Mr. Mahama said a joint private-public partnership will be secured to help revive the nation’s troubled oil refinery.

Speaking at a meeting with players in the petroleum downstream sector in Accra, Mr. Mahama said TOR will be given full attention under his next administration.

“We need to look again at how we can bring the refinery back in place. But I do think that the problems we have with running that refinery is because it is a state-owned enterprise.

“And we all know the inefficiencies that go with state-owned enterprises. And so we are open to private partnership in terms of bringing that refinery back into operation and running it, but we think that whatever private partnership or private participation is invited, it must come through a transparent process.”

Ato Forson dares Henry Quartey to name NDC MPs involved in illegal recruitment

Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has challenged Interior Minister Henry Quartey to identify the NDC MPs purportedly involved in recommending individuals for recruitment into the various security agencies.

Ato Forson in a post on X, formerly Twitter, said Henry Quartey’s assertions that Members of Parliament belonging to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had brought people up to be recruited into the various security services are both alarming and baseless.

The Minority Leader argues that Henry Quartey’s accusations are a tactic to divert attention from the government’s ongoing alleged covert and unlawful recruitment practices in the lead-up to the December 7 general elections.

Henry Quartey, in an interview on Accra-based Neat FM on Tuesday, May 21, said he will not toe the line of the Minority’s allegations but if he is dared, he will mention the names of the MPs and the people they brought for recruitment into the various security services.

“When the NPP came into power, the total number of personnel at the Ghana Immigration Service was 6,000, but today, because of President Akufo-Addo, they are over 14,000. About 12,000 have been added to the Ghana Police Service.

“When you gaze into the eyes of the dead, you would see a ghost; I’m going to leave it here, I won’t go down that lane. But if they dare us, we will mention their names and the people they brought over the years, but we will leave that for now.”

Ato Forson on his X handle, charged the government to rather desist from the improper recruitment it is undertaking and stop attempting to divert issues.

“I find the recent statements by the Interior Minister, Henry Quartey, both alarming and baseless. His insinuation that members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have participated in improper recruitment practices without providing any evidence is a clear attempt to divert attention from the substantive issues at hand.”

“I challenge the Interior Minister to name the individuals he claims were brought forward by NDC MPs for recruitment.

“Let us move away from rhetoric and towards accountability. If the Minister cannot provide these names, then his statements must be seen for what they are: an attempt to distract from the substantive concerns we have raised.”

During a press conference on Monday, May 20, Dr. Forson alleged that NPP parliamentary candidates have been given 30 slots to fill with NPP loyalists and supporters within the security services, including the police and army. He called on President Akufo-Addo and the government to stop this undemocratic practice, emphasizing the need for transparency and fairness in security sector recruitment.

Anger over mining license delays: Akufo-Addo petitioned

A formal petition has been submitted to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, accusing the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, of deliberate delays and bureaucratic hurdles in processing small-scale mining licenses.

The petition, backed by industry leaders and stakeholders, calls on the President to intervene directly and expedite the pending approvals to prevent further economic stagnation and job losses.

Years of Frustration and Stagnation

The petition, submitted earlier this week by loyal party member Nana Kwame Agyemang, with support from several industry leaders, highlights the prolonged bureaucratic hold-ups that have stalled numerous mining projects.

According to Agyemang, applicants have faced insurmountable obstacles despite meticulously adhering to regulations set forth by the Minerals Commission.

The petition accuses Minister Jinapor of repeatedly refusing to sign off on recommendations and licenses without providing any justification for his actions.

Economic Implications and Regulatory Concerns

Agyemang argues that the current state of stagnation undermines the government’s efforts to attract investment to Ghana’s mining sector. Despite the government’s encouragement for investment, the arduous and prolonged process of obtaining a small-scale mining license serves as a significant deterrent to potential investors.

“These delays are unacceptable and have far-reaching consequences for our party and industry. We are calling on the President to take immediate action to resolve this bottleneck and ensure that our mining operations can proceed without further hindrance,” stated Kwasi Obiri-Yeboah, a prominent party member who spearheaded the petition.

The petition details instances where the lack of timely action has had tangible negative impacts, such as a major mining project in the northern region, expected to create thousands of jobs, which remains on hold due to unprocessed licenses.

This stagnation has halted potential investments and led to financial losses and uncertainty among investors, undermining confidence in the government’s ability to manage and promote the mining sector effectively.

Allegations of Corruption

Of even greater concern are pervasive rumors of exorbitant facilitation fees in addition to mandated charges.

According to Agyemang, these allegations not only foster corruption but also erode public trust in the country’s institutions, creating a climate of cynicism and disenchantment that hampers sustainable development efforts.

Call for Immediate Action

Of even greater concern are pervasive rumors of exorbitant facilitation fees in addition to mandated charges. According to Agyemang, these allegations not only foster corruption but also erode public trust in the country’s institutions, creating a climate of cynicism and disenchantment that hampers sustainable development efforts.

Agyemang stresses that the ramifications of these delays extend far beyond individual applicants, posing a grave threat to the nation’s economic vibrancy and social cohesion.

He calls for urgent and decisive action to address these issues and restore confidence in the integrity of Ghana’s mining licensing regime.

The petition warns that the Minister’s nonchalant posture, if not addressed immediately, could severely impact the party’s electoral fortunes in mining communities.

Agyemang implores President Akufo-Addo to initiate a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the processes governing the approval of mining licenses.

Proposed Solutions

Additionally, Agyemang suggests delegating the responsibility for approving small-scale mining licenses to the Minerals Commission, allowing the Ministry to focus on large-scale operations.

He emphasizes the need for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to take note of these concerns and hold the Minister accountable if the party underperforms in the mining areas in the upcoming elections.

A Call for Reform

In his concluding remarks, Agyemang urges the President to heed the call of citizens and take decisive action to address the plight of those seeking to obtain small-scale mining licenses.

He pledges his support for any initiatives aimed at reforming the mining sector and looks forward to a timely and effective resolution to this pressing issue. The petition, also copied to key government officials including the Vice President, Chief of Staff, and National Chairman of the NPP, reflects a growing urgency for reform in Ghana’s mining sector.

Agyemang warns that the longer these challenges persist, the greater the toll on the party’s fortunes and the nation’s economic health.

Political analysts suggest that this petition could place considerable pressure on the President to act swiftly.

“The mining sector is a crucial component of the nation’s economy, and any perceived inefficiency can have significant political ramifications,” said Dr. Sam Yeboah, a political science professor at the University of Johannesburg.

“The Minister will need to balance regulatory oversight with the urgent need to stimulate economic activity.”

Don’t attempt to rig 2024 elections – NDC warns EC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has warned the Electoral Commission (EC), against attempts to manipulate the 2024 general elections.

The NDC vowed to scrutinise and reveal any endeavours by the EC to subvert the integrity of the electoral process.

These remarks from the NDC come in response to the EC’s acknowledgement of errors made in the initial release of figures during the ongoing Limited Voter Registration Exercise. The EC subsequently corrected these errors and provided accurate figures for the different regions.

Addressing journalists on Thursday, May 16, 2024, the General Secretary of the NDC, Fifi Fiave Kwetey, contends that the mistakes were “utterly avoidable.”

He warned, “Simple arithmetic, accurately summing the regional figures from the 16 regions, would have clearly demonstrated to the EC that their numbers were erroneous. Such mistakes are utterly avoidable. Why must Ghana’s Electoral Commission be reduced to an ‘Error Commission’?

“The EC must distance itself from any intentions of rigging and be warned: any attempt to undermine the electoral process will be rigorously challenged and exposed.”

The NDC General Secretary asserted that the EC’s shuffling of categories is “transpositional rigging”.

“On May 12, 2024, the Electoral Commission issued a press statement acknowledging erroneous figures previously released and attempted corrections. However, they claimed the total number of registered voters over the four days remained unchanged. This situation exemplifies what we term “transpositional rigging,” where figures are shuffled between categories without affecting the overall total. The assertion by the EC that these errors in regional figures did not impact the total count is patently misleading.”

Mr Kwetey further issued a firm notice to the Jean Mensa-led Electoral Commission that the 2024 elections will not be business as usual.

“Ladies and gentlemen, with this press conference, we are issuing a firm notice to the Jean Mensa-led Electoral Commission: the 2024 elections will not be business as usual! We are also here to declare unequivocally that any attempt by the EC to violate CI 127, which governs the conduct of the general elections, will be met with resolute resistance from us. We will not stand idly by while the EC undermines the time-tested electoral processes that are well recognised and respected by all stakeholders,” he pointed out.

He charged the EC to approach the handling of electoral figures with the utmost seriousness.

“It is imperative that the EC approaches the handling of electoral figures with the utmost seriousness, as these numbers are fundamental to the integrity of the elections. No voter should be disenfranchised due to careless errors,” Fifi Kwetey stated.

Cedi fall: “Myopic” Akufo-Addo govt spending recklessly – Ato Forson

The Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has attributed the recent depreciation of the Ghanaian Cedi against the dollar, to the indiscriminate spending by the current government.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on May 16, 2024, the Minority Leader noted that as the elections approach, the government’s expenditure has been reckless, with little regard for the long-term economic implications.

“We are going to take this matter very seriously. We believe that the government has lost its way. They are being very myopic, and short-sighted indeed. Because of the elections, they are taking actions that are going to be inimical to the development of our country,” he stated.

As parliament is expected to reconvene tomorrow, May 17, Dr Ato Forson, stated that as a caucus, they are going to explore the options available to them to take further actions against the government.

“We will look at our options available to us and then we will take action tomorrow,” he added.

The minority leader’s remarks come at a critical time as the country’s currency continues to lose ground against the dollar, raising concerns about the potential impact on the economy and the lives of Ghanaians.

Presently, the Ghana Cedis stands at GH¢ 15.00 to $1.

Cecilia Dapaah saga: Domelevo, Gyampo, 100 others petition Parliament to probe EOCO

A group of Ghanaians, including former Auditor-General Daniel Yaw Domelevo, have submitted a petition to Parliament requesting a bipartisan investigation into the Economic and Organised Crime Office’s (EOCO) handling of the investigation regarding the large sum of money found at the residence of former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah.

The petition, which has over 100 signatories from various backgrounds, including anti corruption crusader Martin Kpebu, and Professor Ransford Gyampo, raises concerns about the consistency of the former Minister’s explanations regarding the source of the seized funds.

“The failure to explain the source of the money should have been the cornerstone of the investigation,” the petition which was submitted to Parliament on Thursday, May 16, 2024, noted among others.

The group argue that EOCO should have investigated Madam Dapaah further, but it is important to note that no charges or convictions have been made.\

They further wondered EOCO refused to take steps to protect the money which had been seized from the residence of the former minister by the OSP.

“Upon receipt of the docket, EOCO did not act timeously to seize the money that the OSP was returning to Madam Cecilia Dapaah as publicly stated by the OSP”.

The petition also said EOCO has been inconsistent with their public commentary and actions in the investigation.

The development comes in the wake of the standoff between the state anti-corruption agencies investigating the former Minister over the stash of money.

The OSP is on record to have stated that EOCO lacks the appetite to probe the matter despite the detailed information it shared with them.

Police stop Yvonne Nelson from holding dumsor vigil near Jubilee House

The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has asked popular Ghanaian actress Yvonne Nelson to change the location of her vigil against erratic power supply in the country from the Jubilee House enclave to another venue.

The organizers of the #DumsorMustStop vigil on Wednesday, May 14 met the Accra Police Commander, DCOP Mr Annor Kwasi Arhin, in his office to negotiate the venue for the protest slated for May 25 but the meeting was inconclusive as the organisers insisted on the advertised venue, the Revolution Square which is opposite the seat of Government.

The commander told the leadership of the #DumsorMustStop protest, including Yvonne Nelson, Selorm Dramani Dzramado, and Henry Osei Akoto, to consider relocating the protest venue and adjusting the timing for the street  demonstration, citing public order and security issues.

Recognizing potential risks to public defense, order, and safety, the Command recommended relocating the protest to the Independence Square.

Additionally, the Command highlighted apprehensions regarding the proposed timing of 12 midnight for the conclusion of the protest.

They cautioned that such timing could compromise security measures and escalate tensions, potentially leading to violence.

Therefore, they advised the protest organizers to adjust the timing accordingly.

The organisers agreed to hold the protest from 2pm to 10pm instead of the advertised time – 8am to 12 midnight– but rejected the request to change the converging venue from the Revolution Square to the Independence Square.

Henry Osei Akoto told press men that the erratic power supply was affecting businesses and Ghanaians as a whole, stressing that the venue they chose was to get President Nana Akufo-Addo to hear the frustrations of the suffering masses.

“We will continue to insist on the advertised location because it looks like the president does not want to believe the frequent power cuts are happening everyday and affecting businesses,” he said in Akan.

He said since the meeting was inconclusive, they will return to the Accra Regional Police Headquarters on Friday to continue.

“We won’t compromise on the venue since it is a significant location,” he added.

On her part, Yvonne Nelson stated that the incessant power cuts (Dumsor) were affecting  her “day care business” and her health.

Just as she led Ghanaians in 2015 to protest against a similar power challenges, she was not backing down on her resolve to hitting the streets again to drum home her message.

Henry Osei Akoto, Yvonne Nelson present notice to IGP on Accra Dumsor Vigil

Organisers of the Dumsor Vigil, Accra version, have submitted a notice letter to the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, notifying him and the Ghana Police Service of their intention to hold their event on May 25, 2024.

Details in a copy of the letter presented to the IGP, the group, led by actress Yvonne Nelson, Selorm Dramani Dzramedo, and Henry Osei Akoto, indicated the group’s desire to use the Revolution Square, right opposite the Jubilee House, for the event.

The group said the reason behind the vigil is to “demonstrate our frustrations over the unacceptable erratic electricity supply (dumsor)” and that the “special event will be in the nature of a vigil.”

Providing explanations for the choice of venue, the group said that it is to amplify the significance of history and also because of the proximity to the official seat of government.

“We have carefully chosen the Revolution Square as the venue because of its historical significance and its proximity to the seat of government to give the president an ocular evidence of the debilitating effects of the erratic power supply (dumsor) on us,” the letter said in part.

The group added that participants will gather after 8am and disperse by midnight.

It will be recalled that the organisers and patrons of the successful Kumasi edition announced plans to hold a Dumsor Vigil in Accra as well.

Explaining the reason behind the decision to replicate the same vigil that took place in Kumasi on April 17, 2024, Henry Osei Akoto, one of the leaders of the event, said it is not enough to have only Kumasi featured.

He explained, in an interview, that moving the vigil around is to mount further pressure on the government, and to bring its attention to the debilitating effects of the power outages on businesses and livelihoods.

He further said that the group will soon mobilize Ghanaians to protest against the erratic power supplies, commonly known as Dumsor.

“We will mobilise Ghanaians on the streets soon if you don’t resolve DUMSOR; the inconveniences is just too much.

“You promised Ghanaians you were going to give us an uninterrupted POWER SUPPLY; see where you’ve brought us,” he said.

The Dumsor Vigil is organized by Ashanti Democrats, which is led by Jerry James Sukkah, and is a demonstration against the erratic power supply across the country.

Actress Yvonne Nelson, who was one of the main faces behind the #DumsorMustStop demonstration a few years ago, joins this as an answer to several calls on her to reignite that activity.
