Sunon Asogli reverts shut down as gov’t pledges $30m to avert dumsor

Independent power producer, Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited, has suspended its decision to shut down over government’s $60m indebtedness.
This follows a swift response by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta o cough $30m immediately to avert ‘dumsor’.

Government, according to a statement released by Sunon Asogli Power, has committed itself to pay the second tranche of $30m by the close of next week.
The company on Monday, 5th December, 2023 announced an indefinite shut down of its 560 Megawatts power plant due to the outstanding debt owed it by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Per the statement signed by Chairman, Qun Yang, the shutdown would have started at 6:00 pm yesterday.

“This difficult decision became necessary due to avoidable delays in payment from the GOG/Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for power supplied, as well as, the unproductive engagements to find an amicable solution” portions of the statement said.

However, the swift intervention by government has prevented the already ongoing load shedding from escalating.
Its however unclear that lies ahead because government owes Independent Power Producers, over $1.4billion

BACKGROUND

It will be recalled that in June this year, the IPPs, which control 50 per cent of the country’s generation mix threatened to cut supplies if government does not urgently settle its indebtedness to them.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Chamber of Independent Power Producers, Dr Elikplim Apetorgbor in an interview then said ..“If the ECG does not pay up part of the debt owed our members, they cannot guarantee continuous production of power. The situation is so dire that something urgent must be done,”

He explained that because of he debt the IPPS lacked operating cash inputs such as chemicals for cleaning water or the thermal generators and other supplies many of which were denominated to in foreign currency.

He added that the Chamber owed banks and are paying penalty for defaulting.

Parliament suspends sitting briefly before grilling Education Minister on SHS re-opening

Parliament has suspended sitting briefly to make room for final consultations before grilling the Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum on the re-opening dates for Senior High Schools.

The announcement by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin today followed his earlier appearance to respond to questions by some Members of Parliament.

The questions stood in the names of MPs for Bongo, Edward Bawa, Abed-Nego Azumah Bandim (MP-Bunkpurugu), Kobby Mensah Woyome (South Tongu), Kofi Iddie Adams (Buem) and Ernest Henry Nogbe (Ashaiman) centered on how COVID-19 supplies were shared to schools, stalled GETFund projects at Npkanduri Business and Bankpurugu Senior High Schools, delayed projects in the Jasikan districts, specifically a two-storey boys dormitory Blago Senior High Technical and a six unit classroom blocks for some basic schools.

The others demanded responses on the Ministry’s plans for Secondary, Vocational and Technical Schools in Domeabra Obom and the urgent need for the provision of furniture to 7,000 pupils who currently sit on the floor in the Wa East district.

Public expectation has been high since last Wednesday when the Ghana Education announced December 4, 2023 as re-opening date for SHS freshers, barely a week after the School Placement list was out and December 22 for X’mas break and return on January 3rd 2024.

All four teacher unions, Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Coalition of Concerned Teachers-Ghana (CCT-GH), and Teachers’ and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) have kicked against the dates.

They have cited inconvenience to both teachers and parents who need time to organize themselves and the cost of sending children to school for just three weeks, pick them and return them back to school after same period.

Parliament subsequently discussed the development following widespread concerns by parents and the Speaker summoned the Minister of Education to address the issue before the House.
It followed up with an official appeal through a statement asking the GES and government to reconsider the dates and if possible, defer the re-opening day for first year SHS students to January next year.

But the Ghana Education Service remains defiant and has reaffirmed its position.
In Parliament today, Monday, December 4, 2023, the Minister is yet to address the issue.

This follows the decision by the Speaker, Alban Bagbin to suspend sitting briefly to set the stage for the session with the Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum on the re-opening dates for Senior High Schools.

Galamsey Queen’, Aisha Huang jailed 4yrs, 6months; fined GH¢48k

An Accra High Court has sentenced notorious galamsey queen, Aisha Huang to a four- and half-year jail term for mining offences.
Aisha Huang, shall addition to a fine of GH₵48,000.

This was announced by an Accra High Court on Monday, December 4, 2023.
The Chinese national, also known as En Huang, was standing trial for undertaking a mining operation without a licence, facilitating the participation of persons engaged in mining operation, the illegal employment of foreigners and entering Ghana while prohibited from re-entry.

But Aisha Huang denies insisting she has never been involved in illegal mining.
Her re-arrest after she sneaked into the country triggered public debate amidst accusation of government of threatening her with kid gloves.

Her release and subsequent deportation in 2018, after the Attorney General decided to discontinue her trial for engaging in small-scale mining without licence, provoked angry reactions amidst suspicions about government’s commitment towards fighting the menace.

Aisha Huang however reportedly sneaked into the country to continue her clandestine activities till her cover was blown up.

On May 3, this year, she pleaded guilty to entering Ghana while prohibited from re-entry contrary to section 20(4) of the Immigration Act, 2000, Act 573.

The prosecution argued in Court that that Aisha had an illegal mining concession at Bepotenten in the Amansie West District in the Ashanti Region and also operated a mining support services company.
She had pleaded not guilty to undertaking a mining operation without a licence, facilitating the participation of persons engaged in a mining operation, the illegal employment of foreigners, and entering Ghana while prohibited from re-entry.

Aisha Huang jailed 4 years, six months, fined GH¢48k

Aisha Huang, who has  also been slapped with a GH¢48,000 fine, is also to be deported after serving her jail term.

That was after the Criminal Division of the Accra High Court presided over by Justice Lydia Osei-Marfo, found her guilty on the charge of undertaking a mining operation without a licence, facilitating the participation of persons engaged in a mining operation and the illegal employment of foreigners.

She was also convicted on her own plea in the charge of entering Ghana while prohibited from re-entry.

It was the court’s opinion that the state, led by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Yvonne Atokora Obuobisa, has proven beyond reasonable doubt that Aisha committed the crime.

Facing the judge in her usual nose mask and white scarf, Aisha  was calmly seated in the dock one hour  into the reading of the judgement.

While Aisha Huang had denied all the charges, it was the court’s view that she contradicted herself in her defence statements in the trial which lasted for one year, two months.

Plea of mitigation

Miracle Attachey, counsel for Aisha, in his plea of mitigation said his client had been in custody since October 2022.

He, therefore prayed the court to impose a fine and deport his client instead of a custodial sentence.

“It is our humble prayer that a custodial sentence to the accused would exert another financial burden on the state particularly the prison service”, he added.

She has made the work of the prosecution and court move expeditiously regarding her re-entry charge.

Response

In a sharp response, the DPP said taking into consideration the impact of Aisha’s action on the families and witnesses who testified before this court, it was imperative for the court to impose a maximum custodial sentence and a deportation order.

“In conclusion, we wish to state that because of the indignity with which the accused person operated, the sentence should reflect the impact of her actions on the people of Ghana, the communities that she had permanently impaired and the livelihoods that she took away,” she added

Background

En Huang was accused of being in the thick of affairs of galamsey, especially in the Ashanti Region.

She was deported from the country in 2018, after the A-G decided to discontinue her trial in which she was accused of engaging in small-scale mining without licence.

However, she was said to have sneaked back into the country to allegedly engage in the same activities for which she was deported.

In October 2022, the A-G then decided to prosecute her for the alleged crimes before her deportation and new ones committed since her entry back into the country.

It is the case of the prosecution that Aisha had an illegal mining concession at Bepotenten in the Amansie West District in the Ashanti Region and also operated a mining support services company.

She had pleaded not guilty to undertaking a mining operation without a licence, facilitating the participation of persons engaged in a mining operation, the illegal employment of foreigners, and entering Ghana while prohibited from re-entry.

But on May 3, this year, Aisha pleaded guilty to entering Ghana while prohibited from re-entry contrary to section 20(4) of the Immigration Act, 2000, Act 573.

That was after she had entered into a Plea Bargaining agreement with the State (office of the Attorney General).

Anyone Who Says Mahama’s 24 Hour Economy Proposal Is Not Good Does Not Understand Politics – Alan declares, jabbing Bawumia

The Leader and Founder of the Movement For Change (MFC), Alan Kojo Kyeremanteng, gave a thumbs up to Mahama’s 24 HOUR ECONOMY proposal on Saturday in Kumasi, declaring that those who are opposed to it do not understand politics.

According to the Former Trade Minister of both the Kufuor and Akufo-Addo regimes, what Ghanaians should be asking Mahama is the fine details of what will go into it. He made these declarations after a walk, dubbed ‘Afrafranto Walk” by a mammoth crowd of his supporters in the Ashanti Regional capital.

Alan recently announced his resignation from the NPP and the formation of the MFC after the party’s so-called Super Delegates Conference, accusing the leadership of the party of skewing the election to favour Vice-President Mahamadu Bawumia. His supporters faced various forms of intimidation and harassment in the run up to the election. In some cases, his supporters were assaulted. Huge sums of monies were also said to have been doled out by the establishment to bribe delegates to vote for the Vice-President.

Alan’s open declaration of support for Mahama’s 24 HOUR ECONOMY last Saturday and his assertion that those who are opposed to it was obviously a jab at Bawumia who scoffed at the proposal claiming the 24 HOUR ECONOMY is already in operation because among other things, chop bars and fuel stations operate throughout the night.

Even more bizarre comments about the proposal has come from some leading members of the NPP. While one of them, Stephen Yakubau who is the Upper East Regional Minister, claimed the policy will see farmers going to work at night and therefore unable to have sex with their wives which will also result in their wives cheating on them, another, Maurice Ampaw, says the proposal is bad because with some people working in the night, witches will be unable to fly.

The proposal has been hailed by captains of industry, economists, academics, politicians, civil society organizations and many individuals as a panacea for Ghana’s collapsed economy because it will lead to a boost in the provision and improvement of the country’s tottering infrastructure, boost the manufacturing and services sector of the economy and most importantly create hundreds of thousands of job especially for the youth.

The Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress, Dr. Yaw Baah, excitedly labeled it a GAME CHANGER and called on Ghanaian youth to prepare for more jobs.

There are no Ghanaians in my church — Sonnie Badu

Ghanaian musician and preacher, Sonnie Badu, revealed that his church in America lacks Ghanaian members. According to the preacher, he doesn’t understand why there are no Ghanaians in his church, but any Ghanaian wanting to be part of it can stay if they are comfortable; otherwise, they can join Assemblies of God or Pentecost.

Speaking to Agyemang Prempeh on Power Entertainment, the “Flood Gate” crooner emphasized that if the majority of his church congregants were Ghanaians, it wouldn’t have made as much impact. Real impact, according to him, is when you are accepted by strangers, not your own people.

“If 80% of my church members were Ghanaians, it wouldn’t have been as impactful. Being in America and impacting your own people is not true impact. Real impact is when you go to strangers, and they meet and accept you,” he explained.

Despite this, he mentioned that he lost half of his congregants due to COVID-19. Before the pandemic, he had over 600 people, but afterward, the number reduced to 350.

However, he highlighted that his Tuesday services are the most significant because people come from London to America for deliverance service, and some drive for 6 to 9 hours to attend.

“Before COVID-19, we had over 600 to 650 people in the church within 5 years. Due to COVID-19, every church was shut down, and at some point, only 10 people were allowed in the church auditorium, which included the media team, me, and protocol. So we lost two years to COVID-19. The faith of people in America is different from Africans. If an African is sick, they will start praying and seek spiritual intervention, but an American will go to the hospital if they are sick. Now, I have around 350 congregants in my church. On Tuesday nights, people come from London for deliverance service, and others drive for 9hrs or 6hrs. Tuesday nights are our biggest nights.”

Blakk Rasta is one of the reasons why the Reggae Presenter category has been removed from the RTP Awards —Prince McKay reveals

The Chief Executive Officer of the Radio and Television Personality (RTP) Awards, Mr. Prince Mackay, has disclosed that Blakk Rasta is a significant factor behind the removal of the Reggae Presenters category from the RTP Awards.

His negative remarks about the award scheme led the board to make the decision to eliminate the category.

“People didn’t really take the reggae category seriously, even though I didn’t see it that way. I was one of the few people who made sure that when we started RTP, we would include the reggae category,” he stated.

“RTP is the only awards scheme that honors reggae presenters. Still, if the time has come for us to remove it, we have to. One of the reasons why we took it off is because of some of the negative remarks made by Blakk Rasta,” he added.

However, he took the initiative to inform some of the reggae personalities about the board’s dissatisfaction with Blakk Rasta’s comments before the category was removed.

“When the category was being taken off, I called some of the reggae guys and told them our board people are not happy with the things going on.”
