The Ghana National Gas Company Limited is pursuing major infrastructure expansion plans, including a proposed 278-kilometre high-pressure gas pipeline and an additional compressor, as part of efforts to improve gas transportation and operational efficiency.
Chief Executive Officer Judith Adjoba Blay outlined the plans during a media training session and soirée held at Alisa Hotel in Accra on Saturday, 17 October 2026.
Proposed pipeline to connect western and eastern corridors
Ms Blay said the proposed onshore pipeline would transport natural gas to Tema, providing an alternative to the existing West African Gas Pipeline for deliveries along the eastern corridor.
She indicated that the company is targeting financial close (or a final investment decision) by the end of 2026, subject to the necessary processes. According to her, the project could improve gas supply to industrial centres and create opportunities for businesses along the route to connect to the network.
The pipeline forms part of the company’s broader efforts to strengthen its infrastructure and support the country’s energy needs.
Additional compressor to improve reliability
Ms Blay also disclosed that Ghana Gas is nearing the end of the procurement process for an additional compressor. She explained that the unit would improve operational flexibility by enabling the company to manage operations more effectively when existing equipment requires maintenance. The extra capacity is expected to reduce the risk of disruptions associated with maintaining critical infrastructure.
Increased gas processing volumes
The CEO further highlighted a rise in gas processing volumes, from approximately 100 million standard cubic feet per day to about 130 million standard cubic feet per day. She said the company’s investments in operational efficiency were strengthening its operations.
Ghana Gas processes and transports natural gas for electricity generation and industrial use, making the reliability of its infrastructure important to the country’s energy sector. The proposed expansion projects are expected to support the company’s efforts to improve efficiency and meet future demand.
Further details on the pipeline’s final investment status, precise route, construction schedule and the compressor’s specifications will be important in assessing the progress of the planned investments.
