John Oppong Welbeck Completes CAF Licence A Coaching Course

Best Korle Gonno Trust FC head coach, John Oppong Welbeck, has successfully completed the prestigious CAF Licence A Coaching Course, joining 20 elite coaches who passed through the programme at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) hosted the first batch of the CAF Licence A Coaching Course from February 17 to 26, 2026, at the facility. Backed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the intensive 10-day programme attracted elite coaches from across the continent, all seeking to earn one of CAF’s highest coaching qualifications.

The group featured several notable former Ghana internationals and prominent local technical leads, including John Paintsil, Laryea Kingston, Godwin Attram, Hamza Obeng, Hamza Mohammed, Winfred Dormon, Anita Wiredu, and Sandra Boakye, among others. Welbeck was among the select few chosen to take part in the high-level course.

The CAF Licence A qualification marks a critical milestone for coaches aiming to work at top-flight club level and within national team structures. Participants underwent rigorous theoretical and practical sessions focused on modern tactical principles, player development, performance analysis, leadership, and match preparation. The course was designed to align African coaching standards with global best practices while addressing the unique demands of football on the continent.

The programme also forms part of the CAF Coaching Convention and reflects the GFA’s continued investment in coach education and development.

Welbeck brings a wealth of experience to his new qualification. He has coached numerous clubs both in Ghana and abroad, including a stint in South Africa, and has developed several talents who now play for clubs across different parts of the world.

His coaching career includes work with Ghana’s National Youth teams, serving as chief scout for the Black Satellites (U-20) and working with the Black Starlets (U-16). At club level, he has worked with Medeama SC, Bechem United, Dreams FC, Liberty Professionals Academy, and Nice Ibrahim FC.

He currently serves as project manager for the Tariq Lamptey Foundation and is in charge of Greater Accra Third Division side, Best Korle Gonno Trust FC.

Speaking on his achievement, Coach Welbeck said: “It is a great opportunity for me to impact all the knowledge I learned on upcoming footballers, and the nation will benefit.”

He expressed gratitude to the Ghana Football Association, led by President Kurt Okraku, for the opportunity.
