New details have emerged regarding the robbery attempt at Labone in Accra in which two (2) suspects were gunned down on Thursday.
Deep-throat source within the Police Service has revealed to Myxyzonline.com that intelligence was gathered about the robbery 3 clear days before the suspects arrived at the neighbourhood to carry out their operation.
The revelation comes after GCB Bank (Ghana Commercial Bank) management refuted claims their Labone branch was the target of the robbery when news of the foil broke.
In a statement by the financial institution, the Labone branch was never breached and that no customer, staff member, funds or property were affected.
Although official statement from the Police later in the day after thwarting the crime indicated that the three banks on that stretch – GCB, Zenith and Ecobank – were on the list of the suspected robbers for the operation.
What We Know
In its latest update on Thursday, August 13, the Police said it received intelligence at about 10:45am that a gang was preparing to attack the three banks.
The statement said a police team was immediately deployed to Labone where the gang members were spotted in their vehicles parked close to the banks.
Upon sighting the Police, one of the vehicle sped of in an attempt to escape.
The Police gave them a chase and arrested suspect Augustine Okechuku Maazi. The other occupant however managed to escape.
The robbers in the second vehicle also tried to escape amidst firing. The Police engaged them in a shoot out resulting in the death of two suspects.
Police also recovered two vehicles, a Toyota Highlander vehicle with registration number GS- 1434-18, a Hyundai Tucson vehicle with registration number GS 7915-17 and a blow pistol.
The suspect, a Nigerian, Augustine Okechuku Maazi is in custody assisting the investigation while the bodies of the deceased suspects have been deposited at the morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
The Plot
XYZ sources within the Ghana Police Service disclosed that a special team had been monitoring the gang few days before the robbery.
“When they were planning about the robbery, police had the intelligence amd were planning to get them,” he said and added they (suspects) had come to a location near the banks to familiarise themselves with an escape routes.
The XYZ source who wants to stay anonymous stated “GCB Bank may have denied ever being attacked, they were the target.”
“In all the police was able to gather men immediately to block their escape quickly because we had that intelligence long ago,” he added.
To him, the police is mandated to prevent such crimes, protect lives and properties and maintain public order amd that is just what they did at Labone.
He also said a different gang suspected to Nigerians tried to rob a bank on the Spintex road recently – the reason they had to be alert to prevent the robbery at Labone.
In conclusion, he said the police under the administration of the IGP, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, will do whatever possible to clamp down on various crimes in the country and make it safe.
