British Prime Minister Andy Burnham communicated via messages with a person posing as Susie Wiles, one of US President Donald Trump’s closest advisers and White House chief of staff.
According to reports first published by Politico and confirmed by outlets including the BBC and CNN:
- Only a small number of messages were exchanged after Burnham became prime minister in July 2026.
- The messages were described as being of “no significance.”
- Burnham became suspicious that the contact was not genuine and stopped the exchange.
- The incident was quickly reported to the appropriate authorities.
- There was no phone conversation, only text messages.
- The British embassy in Washington raised the matter with the White House due to concerns, including the possibility that Wiles’ phone may have been compromised again.
Downing Street declined to comment, stating: “We do not comment on national security matters.”
The episode follows an earlier incident in May 2025, when an impersonator (or impersonators) used contacts from Wiles’ personal phone to message US senators, governors and business executives. That earlier breach prompted an FBI investigation.
Exact details of what was said in the messages and the precise timing have not been publicly disclosed.
