Peacefm and hitz fm should be banned — Shatta Wale

Ghanaian dancehall artiste Shatta Wale has issued a warning, declaring that Peace FM and Hitz FM should face a ban from operating.

The “pahpahpahpah” crooner expressed frustration, insisting that these media outlets must conduct thorough research before going on air.

In an interview with Agyemang Prempeh on Power Entertainment on TV XYZ and Power 979FM, Shatta Wale recounted an incident where false information about him circulated without verification. He emphasized that when rumors spread regarding his performance fee at the GMA UK Awards, the radio presenters failed to verify with his manager before making claims on air.

“Peace and Hitz FM should be banned because they don’t do their research well,” Shatta Wale exclaimed. “I don’t think someone who claims to be a top radio presenter should just sit on radio and say Shatta is lying without verification. Sammy Flex is there, who is your contact person, and you can verify with him.”

Shatta Wale also revealed that many radio presenters harbor mixed feelings about him, leading them to tarnish his image on air. “It looks like people have mixed feelings about Shatta Wale, so these people are on radio spreading negativity,” he lamented. “It’s very unhealthy for the public because these are people who are trying to tarnish people’s businesses.”

VAT on Electricity: GFL disappointed at Organised Labour’s U-turn on demo

The Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) has expressed disappointment over the decision of Organised Labour to suspended its planned demonstration over the 15 percent Value Added Tax  (VAT) on Electricity.

Organised Labour had announced February 13, 2024 as the date for the street protest which was scheduled to take place in all the regional capitals but on Friday, the Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr Yaw Baah, announced the suspension of the impending demonstration.

Reacting to the news, the Secretary-General of GFL, Mr Abraham Koomson, said Organised Labour had betrayed some of its members with the suspension of the protest which could have sent a strong signal to the government to withdraw the tax policy.

“We are disappointed at how things are unfolding…Organised Labour looks more disorganised. We are not properly organised,” he told Akora Kofi Darko on TV XYZ News Friday.

Mr. Koomson said he did not know what happened to the initial plans of protesting despite an announcement from the government that it had suspended the policy for further stakeholder engagement.

He said the demonstration would have forced the government to withdraw the tax policy completely.

“I don’t know what happened. The taxes are plenty and they are collapsing businesses. We are paying about 18 different taxes, including ‘borla taxes’… the protest would have piled pressure on government to act,” Mr Koomson stated and added that he suspects some elements in government have been able to compromise the leadership of the labour group.

Meanwhile, Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr Yaw Baah, at a press conference in Accra emphasized their commitment to advocating against what he termed “unfavourable tax policies.”

Court remands 37 persons for attacking Kwahu Bepong chief’s palace

The Nkawkaw District Court has remanded 37 accused persons into police custody over the attack on Kwahu Begong Chief’s Palace on February 4, 2024.

The accused persons were arraigned before the Court on five counts, including causing unlawful damage to properties following their arrest in connection with the attack.

The police in a statement dated Friday, February 9, 2024, said all the accused persons are to reappear before the court on 23rd February 2024.

Background

It will be recalled that the palace of the Chief of Kwahu Bepong in the Eastern region Nana Nyarko Bawuah II was attacked on February 6 in an attempt to lynch a suspect who was at the palace.

According to the chief, but for the professional conduct of the police personnel the situation could have escalated and gotten out of control.

“The youth stormed this palace determined to lynch the suspect here. They were throwing everything they could get into the palace when the police prevented them from attacking the suspect. In fact it was the women among them who were supplying the stones for the men to throw in here,” the chief said.

The violence erupted following the alleged rape and murder of a 45-year-old woman, Akua Kyerewaa, by a 23-year-old ex-convict, Kwasi Tenkorang.

Govt’s Cocoa Rehabilitation Programme must be probed – Eric Opoku

The Ranking Member of the Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs Committee, Eric Opoku, is calling for a probe into the Cocoa Rehabilitation Programme launched in 2018.

The legislator argues that the programme, which identifies diseased farms, cuts down affected trees, and replants them with disease-resistant cocoa varieties, among other measures, has failed, as the country has lost some 500,000 hectares of cocoa farms to Swollen Shoot disease.

In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Eric Opoku said the rollout of the programme must be investigated to identify the cause of this significant loss.

He also alleged that the funds earmarked for the programme have been exhausted, leaving cocoa farmers in a dilemma.

“I am reliably informed that we have exhausted the amount earmarked for the rehabilitation, and COCOBOD will soon hand over the farms to the farmers, even though some farms have just been cut down and not even planted and provided with plantain suckers. Once we have exhausted the resources, they intend to hand over the farms, so if, at the time of handing over, the programme is escalating to this extent, then something is wrong somewhere, and we need to interrogate that.”

Mr. Opoku further cast doubt on the assurances given by the chief executive officer of COCOBOD to ensure the programme’s continuation.

“The picture being created is very alarming, and I don’t believe in the assurances that the CEO is offering because we are in the field, and we know what is happening there.”

We won’t engage govt on electricity VAT— Organised Labour

Organised labour in the Greater Accra Region says it is not ready for any engagement with the government on the 15 per cent Value Added Tax (VAT) imposed on electricity consumption for residential customers.

Addressing a news conference in Accra yesterday, the Greater Accra Chairperson, Patrick Benyemi, stressed that “organised labour’s position is a total and unconditional withdrawal of the 15 per cent VAT and not suspension of it”.

He said if the government failed to heed the demand, members of organised labour would lay down their tools next Tuesday to drum home their demand.

Mr Benyemi explained that the implementation of the VAT would aggravate the plight of the already overburdened population.

“We, as Greater Accra organised labour, associate ourselves with the demands of our national leaders and thereby emphasise that we cannot pay VAT on electricity.

“We will not pay it today; we will not pay it tomorrow. Organised labour in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana unequivocally opposes this decision to impose a 15 per cent VAT on electricity consumption,” he said.

Regression

Describing the policy as a regressive one, he said it would threaten the livelihoods of hardworking Ghanaians and undermine the nation’s economic stability.

“Imposition of this awkward, bad and nuisance VAT on electricity, a basic necessity for households and businesses alike, will unreasonably burden already struggling citizens.

“Low-income families will be hit the hardest as they are forced to allocate a larger portion of their income to cover essential electricity bills,” Mr Benyemi added.

Electricity, he said, was not a luxury but a fundamental utility essential for everyday life and economic productivity and added that taxing it would only exacerbate inequality and widen the gap between the wealthy and the vulnerable in our society.

Background

The government directed the relevant agencies to begin the implementation of the 15 per cent VAT on domestic consumption of electricity at the start of the year to raise revenue as part of its COVID-19 recovery efforts and as part of conditions to satisfy the government’s latest programme with the International Monetary Fund.

In a letter dated January 1, 2024, the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, instructed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO) to apply the VAT to residential customers exceeding the maximum consumption level for lifeline units.

But in January this year, the national leadership of organised labour, led by the Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr Yaw Baah, gave the government a one-week ultimatum to withdraw the VAT on electricity for residential customers.

He said the implementation of the VAT on residential customers would worsen the plight of already burdened Ghanaians since the cost of electricity would go up by 15 per cent.

This month, organised labour announced that its members would lay down their tools on February 13, but the government has since suspended the directive for further engagement.

Highly Spiritual Records made me – Kurl Songs

Ghanaian artist Kurl Songs has acknowledged Highly Spiritual Records as the cornerstone of his music career.

According to the “Jennifer Lomotey” hitmaker, his recognition in the music industry would not have been possible without the support of Highly Spiritual Records.

“Where I am now, if it weren’t for Highly Spiritual, I wouldn’t be here,” he explained.

However, Kurl Songs believes that as individuals pursuing growth in the music industry, it is common for artists to part ways with their record labels.

“It’s important for us to grow, and sometimes as business-minded individuals, we may not want to remain with one label for too long. Eventually, the time comes when artists want to explore other opportunities and see what comes next,” he added.

In an interview with Afia Owusu on Xzone on TV XYZ, Kurl Songs highlighted the importance of artist management. He believes that having proper management has been beneficial to his career.

“For me, having management is crucial. It has helped me tremendously,” he emphasized.

Kurl Songs emphasized that after parting ways with Highly Spiritual Records, he is currently not under any management.

Dr. BAWUMIA CANNOT TAKE CREDIT FOR GHANA CARD

Dr Bawumia paid a visit to NIA in 2017, along with the current NCA Boss Mr Anokye and some CEOs. As Head of Systems at the time, it was my responsibility to take him and his entourage through the NIA systems. That is, where we started from, where we are now, and where we plan to go.

Below is a picture of me explaining the systems we had in place and how we are transitioning from the old centralised system, which only captured two fingerprints, to a new system that will capture all ten fingerprints of an applicant, Iris, phone numbers for SIM registration, and issue cards immediately.

As part of my briefing, I informed Dr. Bawumia and his team that we needed to transition to instant issuance printing because the previous system was expensive because it was centralised printing. That is, we register Ghanaians, bring their data to the NIA office, process it, print it, and return to the field to distribute it to applicants. However, with the new system, cards would be issued immediately.

Again, I informed Dr. Bawumia and his team that the old system, which had approximately 16 million Ghanaians’ data, had been successfully migrated to the new system. This is to ensure data consistency and integrity. That is why if you register now and change your Date of Birth, and it does not match what you registered with in the previous system, it will be flagged for investigation.

Dr. Bawumia and his team were informed that the new system had completed the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) in December 2016 and was now ready for the final acceptance test, the Site Acceptance Test (SAT), prior to its launch.

Dr. Bawumia and his team were also informed that the new system is a public-private partnership (PPP) between Margins Group and the NIA, with the first contract to pilot instant card issuance completed in 2013 as part of the FIMS project.

It is therefore surprising that Dr. Bawumia, in his lecture yesterday, took credit for the new system while condemning the previous government for doing nothing. That is obvious DISHONESTY. In my next post, I will share email exchanges between NIA and the Margins group as we migrated old system data to new ones.

The only thing they have added is the Digital address field on the forms. That was even done wrongly. Go to NIA now an give them any digital address and the system will pick so far as it is consistent with the format of the addressing system.

The next post will show the documentary evidence.

Blue cards for sin-binned players to be trialled by football’s lawmakers Ifab.

Football’s lawmakers Ifab are to trial sin-binning players and issuing blue cards, it will be announced on Friday.

Sin-bins have been used at grassroots level for dissent but their use could be extended to cynical fouls as part of a trial.

It is not yet clear when the trial will start and which competitions it will involve.

The Premier League has already ruled out being part of the initial roll-out of any trial.

Ifab (International Football Association Board) is scheduled to hold its annual meeting at Loch Lomond in Scotland on 2 March and sin-bin trials at higher levels of the game are listed as a topic for discussion in the agenda.

However, after introduction at grassroots levels, it seems Ifab has already decided to advance their use.

Sin-bins were piloted in 2018-19, with the Football Association reporting a 38% total reduction in dissent across 31 leagues.

They were introduced across all levels of grassroots football from the 2019-20 season in an attempt to to improve levels of respect and fair play.

The rule change was then implemented up to step five of the National League system and tier three and below in women’s football.

“I think [there is] frustration for fans watching games when they see a promising counter-attack that’s ruined by that [a tactical foul],” FA chief executive Mark Bullingham previously said.

“The question of whether a yellow card is sufficient for that has led to us looking at whether that should be involved in the protocol as well.

“The starting point was looking at player behaviour and dissent – we’re then looking at whether we should extend it into other areas, such as tactical fouls, as well.”

LGBTQ+: Ghana Parliament approves custodial sentence of 3 to 5 yrs for promoters of homosexuality

Parliament has endorsed a minimum custodial sentence of three years and a maximum of five years for individuals found to be willfully promoting, sponsoring, or supporting LGBTQ+ activities.

Additionally, those caught engaging in such activities will face a minimum sentence of six months and a maximum of three years.

During parliamentary deliberations on the clause-by-clause amendment of the bill concerning the promotion of proper human sexual rights and Ghanaian family values, MP for Ningo Prampram, Sam Nartey George, clarified the rationale behind the punitive measures.

He emphasised that the public’s concern lies with the advocacy and promotion of such activities rather than individuals’ private behaviour.

Explaining the breakdown of the sentences, George stated, “For individuals caught engaging in these activities themselves, the punishment ranges from a minimum of six months to a maximum of three years.

“However, for those actively promoting, sponsoring, or supporting such agendas, the penalty increases to a minimum of three years and a maximum of five years.”

Making NSS optional will increase corruption – Apaak

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak, has kicked against a proposal by the flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to make the one-year mandatory National Service optional when he is voted to power.

Dr. Apaak, who also doubles as the Ranking Member on the Education Committee of Parliament said such a policy will only create an avenue for bribery and corruption to thrive.

The educationist who was speaking to Citi News argued that the move will decline patriotism among Ghanaian students upon completion of their tertiary education.

While announcing his vision for the country in Accra on Wednesday, Dr. Bawumia announced plans to make the service optional when he is elected president in the upcoming general elections.

“I believe it is time to rethink the concept of our current national service scheme. My government will propose that those who, after completion of their education, can secure jobs, would be exempted from national service. National service will no longer be mandatory, and students will have the option to decide whether to do national service. This will also encourage companies to go to campuses for recruitment annually,” Dr. Bawumia said.

Dr. Clement Apaak said the implementation of such a proposal will only create a favourable exemption opportunity for the children of the political elite.

“What it will essentially do is introduce optional service in place of National Service, and once it becomes optional, it also creates the avenue for bribery and corruption. We all know the value of doing National Service, and we know that the National Service certificate plays a very important role, especially for those of us who will want to go into public service.”

“Time without number, you may have heard persons who have been nominated for ministerial positions being asked by the Appointments Committee where they did their National Service and whether they have certificates and so by saying that we are going to make it optional, you are totally destroying what we know and replacing it with a system that will only exempt the sons and daughters of the political elite.”
