Conduct 2024 elections with integrity, transparency, and trust – Speaker of Parliament

The Speaker of the 8th Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has urged the Electoral Commission of Ghana to conduct the 2024 elections with integrity, transparency, and trust.

He issued the clarion call at the 8th Harmattan School, of the University for Development Studies, Tamale.

Speaking as the guest of honor, the Speaker urged the EC to prioritize the will and safety of the voter, and the stability of the country.

He further cautioned the media to be circumspect in their reportage and not be hasty in declaring results. The media must also be fair, impartial, and responsible in their coverage of political parties and their activities.

He reiterated the need to protect Ghana’s democracy as violent extremists within the sub-region are poised to take advantage of tensions that characterize elections.

He spoke on the theme; Accountable governance, violent extremism, and the 2024 elections.

Bawumia must answer his 170 questions to Amissah-Arthur – Otokunor

The Director of Interparty and CSOs Relations for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Peter Boamah Otokunor, has descended on Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia over the economic downturn of the country.

He said the flag bearer and leader of the governing NPP who wants to be elected to power in the 2024 has not proven to Ghanaians that he will be a better manager of the economy when given the nod.

Otokunor who was speaking on Dwaboase on TV XYZ  contended that the promises Bawumia made to Ghanaians in the run up to the 2016 general elections have not been fulfilled because the Vice President knows nothing about the management of a country’s economy.

As the head of Government’s Economic Management Team, he noted that Bawumia had failed woefully to better the lives of Ghanaians as he promised in opposition.

pointing to the heightening corruption in government, the free fall of the Cedi, high interest rates, high cost of doing business and the numerous taxes slapped on Ghanaians, including COVID-19 taxes, Otokunor described Bawumia as a “pathetic liar” who should not come close to the presidency once President Akufo-Addo is booted out of power.

He said Bawumia, who had failed woefully to manage the economy well, should answer the 170 questions he posed to his predecessor, Paa Kwasi Amissah-Arthur – John Mahama’s vice– in 2016 about the Econ before Ghanaians can take him seriously.

”Dr Bawumia should answer the 170 quest he poses to the then Vice President, Paa Kwasi Amissah-Arthur, about the economy,” Otokunor stated.

He said the Ghana cedi has depreciated so much that the cost of doing business has gone up and businesses are suffering, rendering many people poor unlike what Bawumia pledged.

Otokunor further admonished Ghanaians to reject Bawumia and rather vote the flag bearer of the NDC, former President John Mahama, to power since he has always been sincere with the citizens.

According to him, it is Mr Mahama who is passionate about the challenges Ghanaians are faced with and willing to work tirelessly to turn things around.

Bawumia’s address has vindicated critics of Akufo-Addo’s Govt

A Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has stated that certain aspects of the address delivered by the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer have vindicated his critics.

Gyampo in an analysis of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s address on Wednesday, February 7, said “Parts of the presentation was an indictment on the government of which he is part, in a manner that raises serious questions and vindicates those of us who have been critics of the government.

He specifically highlighted the contradiction inherent in pledging not to have more than 50 ministers while being part of a government that currently comprises over 100 ministers. Additionally, Gyampo pointed out the flagbearer’s promise to abolish certain taxes, including the Emissions tax, Gaming Tax, E-Levy, and VAT on electricity consumption.

These promises, according to Gyampo, align with the criticisms he and others have raised regarding the need to streamline the size of the government and eliminate what he terms “nuisance taxes.”

Gyampo reflected on the past, noting that supporters of the flagbearer had previously criticized and opposed similar critiques raised by him and others. He posed a rhetorical question, wondering whether these supporters would now direct their criticisms toward the flagbearer himself, considering his current stance that seemingly aligns with the earlier calls for downsizing the government and eliminating what he deems as burdensome taxes.

Below is Professor Gyampo’s full speech

Bawumia’s Address – A Preliminary Analysis

1. This essentially was an articulation of achievements and vision, fundamentally in the broader area of Digitization and honestly, the various manifestations of this overarching policy, and what it can do to promote development, is indubitable and enormous. No doubt it formed the interwoven central theme of the presentation.

2. Unfortunately, Ghanaians had to wait to be told more about what digitization has done for them by the man himself, in a manner that makes many of the achievements which should have been long known, sound new. Consequently, there may be the need to fact-check many of the claims in order to be sure.

3. It appears DMB is the only one who has a firm grasp over the policy, as the party itself has either been ignorant about the claims about Digitization or has been incompetent in communicating its achievements to fester in the psyche of Ghanaians. Unless the party begins to undertake remedial tutorials about Digitization and its achievements for the purposes of political communication, the work will be difficult for DMB.

4. Despite what it can do, Digitization is not the sine qua non to development. Other key interventions such as good governance and deliberate efforts to seal the leakages and slippages, fight corruption, exemplary leadership that first tightens its belt, rather than living bourgeoisie, etc should have been emphasized more than being treated nearly as appendages.

5. Parts of the presentation was an indictment on the government of which he is part, in a manner that raises serious questions and vindicates those of us who have been critics of the government. Promising to have not more than 50 Ministers when you are part of a government of over 100 Ministers; and promising to abolish some taxes like the Emissions tax, Gaming Tax, E-Levy, VAT on electricity consumption etc makes some of us feel vindicated for criticizing and calling for downsizing of government and the abolition of such nuisance taxes. DMB’s supporters came after us for such criticisms and I am wondering whether they will go after him, now that he’s taken a position that responds favorably to our criticisms on the size of government and nuisance taxes.

6. But the more important question is, why do these great interventions tomorrow, instead of today that they are greatly needed? Does the answer still lie in the claim that he’s not the one in charge? Well, in that case, then karma is not good at all. There was then absolutely no basis for the 170 questions posed to Veep Amissah-Arthur because, he was also a mate and wasn’t in charge.

7. DMB still blames our challenges on COVID and Russian-Ukraine war and there is no doubt at all that these have had negative effects on many countries including Ghana. But a more convincing explanation could have also focused on an admission of what was done wrong domestically, and a promise to refrain from our own contributions to the challenges. It cannot be entirely accurate for us to blame all other than ourselves for our challenges.

8. Finally, there were great ideas that were espoused including the need for a national development plan, a move that was initiated by the predecessor government but was jettisoned. All the other contenders in the 2024 elections also have great plans. But it appears great plans wouldn’t really matter. Available empirical survey reports show that many Ghanaians now, do not believe in political promises, as many of them are merely vote garnering gimmicks. What would therefore be the decider in the 2024 elections, would be a side by side comparison of the trustworthiness, credibility and achievements of the various contenders.

In my next post, I will now offer a sharper focus and properly interrogate some of the policy vision outlined. Where they deserve commendations, we would commend and where they must be fact-checked and critiqued, we will do so.

Bawumia can’t look clean irrespective of how NPP decorates him – NDC’s Doughan

A member of the communication team for the NDC, Chris Doughan has admonished Ghanaians to disregard Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, saying the NPP flag bearer has lost credibility.

Bawumia who is now the leader of the governing NPP has pledged to do things differently from his Boss Nana Akufo-Addo when voted to power in 2025.

Dr Bawumia is NPP’s flag baerer

In his first ever public address after he was elected to lead the NPP at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Bawumia touted his economics credentials but subtly absolved himself from the economic crisis of the country under President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Among other things, the new NPP leader announced that he will not appoint many ministers as his boss when he is voted to power, and went on to pledge that he will not superintend a corrupt government.

He acknowledged there was hardship in the country but indicated that it had nothing to do with him since his vision for the country, as the Head of the Economic Management Team, had been stifled since assuming office.

To play safe, Bawumia promised to abolish some taxes he believes are nuisance and affront to the growth of businesses such as the controversial E-Levy and the Emission Tax which have infuriated Ghanaians.

To him, he has what it takes to move the country from the economic crisis to building wealth for all.

But Chris Doughan who was reacting to Bawumia’s seeming new image stated that he was playing with the minds of Ghanaians and that, if Ghanaians voted for him, he would crash the country’s economy.

”Bawumia has been lying to Ghanaians for a long time and cannot be trusted anymore. He cannot lie to us again because we know him to be a pathetic liar who promises and never delivers,” the NDC man said in Akan.

He said most of the promises Bawumia made to Ghanaians about the economy and how he would turn the fortunes of the country still remain a dream despite the harsh economic conditions the citizens have had to grapple with under the Akufo-Addo government.

”Bawumia has been in charge of the economy since 2017 yet the people keep suffering because of his bad policies,” he said while indicating that the cost of living has skyrocketed and electricity prices keep swelling to the detriment of the already poor Ghanaians.

He went on to charge Ghanaians to rather reject Bawumia’s new promises and focus on the flag bearer of the NDC, former president John Mahama who was honest to Ghanaians in his first term and put taxpayers money to good use.

”John Mahama did a lot for Ghana with little resources unlike Bawumia and his Boss, Akufo-Addo. We the members of the NDC will jealously support John Mahama to win power and save this country from the ditch the NPP leadership has put us,” Doughan said on Inside Politics on TV XYZ.

I have what it takes to fight corruption – Bawumia

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has asserted that Ghanaians can rely on him to combat corruption if elected as President in the forthcoming December elections.

He insisted that he had never been implicated in any corruption scandal throughout his life.

Dr. Bawumia affirmed that his personal integrity positions him to mitigate the corruption scourge, if not eradicate it entirely.

Addressing the public on Wednesday, February 7, at the University of Professional Studies, Accra, he pledged to digitalize all state agencies as part of efforts to curb corruption.

“If it is someone with personal integrity who is not corrupt, and can be trusted to fight corruption, then your choice, clearly, is Dr. Bawumia. And, if the person you have in mind is someone you can trust to work hard tirelessly, and selflessly for Ghana, it is Dr. Bawumia.”

Dr. Bawumia reiterated his dedication to safeguarding the nation’s natural resources for the collective welfare of all citizens.

“If you are looking for the man who is more committed to protecting and using our natural resources for the benefit of Ghanaians, it is Dr. Bawumia,” he added.

The current administration has faced significant criticism for its perceived defense of officials accused of corruption and related activities.

Additionally, the Office of the Special Prosecutor, established by the government, has been faulted for not meeting the anticipated standards in its anti-corruption endeavors.

Bawumia speaks on his vision for Ghana

The Vice President and Flag bearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is set to address the country at the Kofi Ohene Konadu Auditorium of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), today.

This is his first public lecture since was elected the flag bearer of the NPP, and he is expected to address the public his vision as the leader of the governing party.

Former president J.A Kufuor and some NPP stalwarts have arrived at the auditorium at UPSA, including the Chief of Staff, Frema Opare and Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah.

Even though a number of the opposition bigwigs have touted him as someone who has nothing more to present to Ghanaians, some also share the view that, his speech may be built on the legacies of President Akufo-Addo.

Australia to allow workers to ignore after-hours calls from bosses.

Australia will introduce laws giving workers the right to ignore unreasonable calls and messages from their bosses outside of work hours without penalty, with potential fines for employers that breach the rule.

The “right to disconnect” is part of a raft of changes to industrial relations laws proposed by the federal government under a parliamentary bill, which it says would protect workers’ rights and help restore work-life balance.

Similar laws giving employees a right to switch off their devices are already in place in France, Spain and other countries in the European Union.

A majority of senators have now declared support for the legislation, Employment Minister Tony Burke from the ruling centre-left Labor party said in a statement on Wednesday.

The provision stops employees from working unpaid overtime through a right to disconnect from unreasonable contact out of hours, Burke said.

“What we are simply saying is that someone who isn’t being paid 24 hours a day shouldn’t be penalised if they’re not online and available 24 hours a day,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told reporters earlier on Wednesday.

The bill is expected to be introduced in parliament later this week.

The bill also includes other provisions like a clearer pathway from temporary to permanent work and minimum standards for temporary workers and truck driver.

Some politicians, employer groups and corporate leaders warned the right to disconnect provision was an overreach and would undermine the move towards flexible working and impact competitiveness.

The left-wing Greens, which supports the rule and was the first to propose it last year, said it was a big win for the party. A deal had been reached between Labor, smaller parties and independents to support this bill, Greens leader Adam Bandt said on Twitter.

“Australians work an average of six weeks unpaid overtime each year,” Bandt said.

That equated to more than A$92 billion ($60.13 billion) in unpaid wages across the economy, he added.

“That time is yours. Not your boss’.”

Twin bombings kill at least 28 as Pakistan prepares for election.

Two bomb explosions near candidates’ offices in the Pakistani province of Balochistan killed at least 27 people and wounded dozens on the eve of general elections, officials said.

The first blast killed 18 people in Pishin district north of Quetta city.

A second explosion left nine people dead in Qila Saifullah, about 150km (93 miles) to the east.

The vote has been marred by violence and claims of poll-rigging. Former PM Imran Khan is barred from contesting.

Police are still trying to determine the cause of the two blasts.

Resource-rich Balochistan – Pakistan’s largest, and poorest, province – has a history of violence. It has seen a decades-long struggle for greater autonomy by various groups, some of them armed. Islamist militants, including the Pakistani Taliban (TTP), operate along the Afghan-Pakistani border.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack in front of an independent candidate’s party office in Pishin, a town about 100km (62 miles) south-east of the Afghan border. The provincial authorities said 25 people were also wounded.

Images on social media showed cars and motorbikes blown apart by the force of the explosion. Officials told the BBC the candidate was meeting his polling agent at the time.

Details of the second blast are still emerging. A senior police official told AFP news agency it took place in Qila Saifullah’s main bazaar, targeting the election office of the JUI-F party.

There have been violent incidents in both Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces in the week before Thursday’s vote, and the violence in Pishin and Qila Saifullah was not unexpected.

In mid-January, insurgent group Baloch Liberation Army-Azad (BLA) released a pamphlet after claiming responsibility for bombing an election training office. The pamphlet urged people to boycott the elections. Soon after, reports of hand grenade attacks on political party offices were reported from various cities in the province.

Many voters in Balochistan feel neglected by the country’s political parties, given the province has so few seats in parliament. They often feel candidates are foisted on them, with few if any links to Balochistan.

And many feel the vote is unfair. “It is a selection,” numerous voters told BBC Urdu in the city of Turbat last month.

Following Wednesday’s attacks, the Balochistan government said Thursday’s vote would proceed as planned.

“Rest assured, we will not allow terrorists to undermine or sabotage this crucial democratic process,” provincial information minister Jan Achakzai posted on X, formerly Twitter.

More than 128 million voters are eligible to cast ballots in Thursday’s election. In Pakistan’s first-past-the-system 266 National Assembly seats are directly elected.

Many are questioning the credibility of the election as Khan and his party have been sidelined.

His party won the largest number of seats in the last general election but he was jailed on corruption charges last year and disqualified from running for public office. Since last week he has been convicted in three other cases and faces years behind bars – he says all the charges are politically motivated.

The authorities deny carrying out a crackdown, but many PTI leaders are behind bars, in hiding or have defected.

Thousands of the party’s supporters were rounded up after protests – at times violent – when Khan was taken into custody last year.

PTI candidates are having to run as independents following the electoral commission’s decision to strip the party of its cricket bat symbol. Electoral symbols are vital in helping voters mark their ballots in a country with high rates of illiteracy.

The man tipped to win Thursday’s election is three-time former PM Nawaz Sharif, who himself was behind bars at the last election. Analysts say it appears he has done a deal with the military to facilitate his return to politics.

A high turnout will be key to how the PTI fares, many analysts say. Results must be announced within 14 days of the vote.
