9 in 10 Ghanaians believe that country is going in the wrong direction – Afrobarometer

Latest democracy risk report by Afrobarometer has indicated that 87% representing (almost) 9 in every 10 Ghanaians believe the country is heading in the wrong direction.

This comes 141 days to the 2024 December polls to select a new President and parliamentarians for the country.

Details of the Afrobarometer report suggested a massive decline in democracy satisfaction among countries in Africa, with Ghana experiencing a double digit decline. In 2011/2013, the percentage of Ghanaians that were satisfied with democracy stood at 74%.

However, 10 years later (2021/2023), the rate has decreased to 51% indicating a 23 percentage points decline. This shows a decreasing popularity of democracy among Ghanaian folks over the years.

The Afrobarometer report also revealed some disparities between the youth and the elderly in terms of support for democracy in Africa. According to the report, the youth expressed a greater willingness to tolerate military rule compared to elderly citizens. “…although Africa’s youth differ little from their elders in their support for democracy, they express a greater willingness to tolerate military intervention.” the report said

This was evident in Ghana as well as there was some willingness to accept military intervention if need be. Comparing the rejection-of-military rule in 2011/2013 and 2021/2023, the rate has decreased significantly from 86% to 68%. This shows a decrease in the rejection of military rule among the Ghanaian people.

The Afrobarometer report emphasised that, “…Ghana’s much heralded reputation for clean elections has been tarnished by increased violence, with eight fatalities during the 2020 presidential polls, and President Nana Akufo-Addo has grown increasingly heavy-handed, stifling the media and eroding the accountability of institutions”.

Focus on reviving economy, not empty campaign promises – Mahama tells NPP

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has slammed the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing them of prioritising campaigning for votes and making empty promises over revitalising the economy.

He suggested that claims by the party’s running mate, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, asserting that Akufo-Addo’s achievements surpass those of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, demonstrate the government’s lack of awareness of the country’s hardships.

Mahama argued that the government’s primary focus should be on addressing the nation’s current economic issues.

During a mini durbar as part of his visit to the Chiefs and Elders of La-Bawuleshie and Mempeasem in the Ayawaso West Constituency, Mahama urged the NPP government to concentrate on improving the economy instead of making unfounded promises.

“Unfortunately, the people who have caused this economic crisis do not even realise there is a crisis. Because you hear them say they are the best government and even Nkrumah doesn’t compare, it shows they don’t even understand the situation in which Ghana is.

“Because if they understood the situation, we are still five months to an election there are urgent measures they can take to ameliorate the situation. You don’t go saying vote for me and when I come I will do this or that; you can do it now.

“You say you will rationalise taxes, five months to an election, is enough time to rationalise taxes. All the promises you are making, you have enough time to start implementing them now but you say, no, vote for me first then I will come and do it. What they did in 2016, they can’t do again,” he stated.

NPP and NDC haven’t helped Ghana; we must look beyond them – Movement for Change

The spokesperson for the Movement for Change, Ebo Buckman, has stated that both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have failed to provide meaningful development for the benefit of Ghanaians.

He criticised the two major parties for comparing mediocre and below-average performances, which he believes are not what Ghanaians deserve.

Research and data firm Fitch Solutions has predicted that the governing NPP will be defeated by the opposition NDC in the December 7 general elections. According to the London-based firm, which has consistently maintained this forecast since last year, 54 per cent of respondents in their survey favoured NDC’s candidate John Mahama to win the upcoming presidential election.

However, Mr Buckman emphasised that Ghanaians should consider alternatives beyond these two political parties.

He noted that the Movement for Change advocates for a government of national unity instead of relying on a single political party, which has historically not been successful.

Speaking on JoyNews ‘The Pulse, Mr Buckman told the host, Elton John Brobbey that “if it is going to be the usual NDC, NPP political football, then NDC, as I said, because the situation has moved from bad to worse, NDC may have an edge over NPP. This election is not going to be an NPP or NDC election anymore. It is going to be a personality context because Mr Alan Kyerematen, Mr Mahama, Alhaji Bawumia, and the rest and so Ghanaians are going to look out for the person, not the party, who can change the fortunes of the country”.

He noted that, unlike Mahama and Dr Bawumia, Mr Alan Kyerematen has presented a concrete plan.

According to Buckman, Mr Kyerematen acknowledges that the economy is in shambles and believes that the usual approach of having a manifesto is not sufficient.

Mr Buckman emphasised that the way forward is to implement an economic plan capable of steering the country’s economy to a point where everyone can be satisfied, making this a key distinction.

“So, the Ghanaian should not be misled to the point that if it is not the NDC, it is the NPP.”

Financial Economist Dr Nene Adams of UPSA writes about 24-hour economy policy

Since the announcement of the 24-hour economy policy by the National Democratic Congress- NDC and its Flagbearer for the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections as the
foundation for his economic policy and the party’s manifesto [promises], the 24-Hour society vehicle had assumed unprecedented levels of traction and has become a lively topic in
boardrooms, management meetings, trade unions discussions, civil society organisations deliberations, security, intelligence and law enforcement agencies brainstorming sessions, local
councils and city administrators discussions, and in fact, it also dominates street conversations even amongst ordinary citizens.

As much as it had generated traction, so had concerns and reservations persisted when it comes to the meaning and how the framework would be
operationalised, most of which are not and should not be considered as political mischief.
The terms “night-time economy*, ‘nocturnal economy”‘, 24-7 environment’ and ‘the
24-hour economy* are used interchangeably and sometimes synonymously with each other, in
most cases however, the latter is used to refer to all activities throughout the 24-hour period of
the day and for the whole of the 365-days of the year.

It is also vital to note that, this paper
utilised a tripod approach of theoretical literature, analytical empirical data, and our current
and historical economic situation in making a case for the 24-Hour economy system as a
superior transformational economic policy framework to tackle the challenges facing the
country and reset the economy unto a sustainable recovery path for the benefit of the citizenry
[Diwakar V. et al, 2019; emphasis mine].

The 24-Hour system recognized as a vital contributor to urban growth and cultural enhancement, gained increasing attention from researchers policymakers, and urban planners, given its potential to stimulate economic growth, create employment opportunities, and promote cultural activities [Edwards, 2010; Morleo, et al,
20121.

Historical Background of the 24-Hour Work Schedule System. The concept of the night-time economy as a key component of the 24-Hour economy system, first appeared in the 1970s in the United Kingdom and Europe.

When Europe’
industrial cities began to experience an identity crisis after transforming from production
centres to consumption centres, the night-time economy is said to have been conceived to pull
these places back from the brink of ruin.

It was originally associated with people engaged in
drinking and nightlife activities and was
generallv referred to as the “chaos economy mostly regarded as an arena for fun and socialization [Rowe and Bavinton 2011; Turner 2005;

Outbreak of dengue fever to Central Reg. demands enhanced surveillance – Prof Binka

Renowned Clinical Epidemiologist Prof. Fred Binka has expressed concerns about the spread of dengue fever to Ghana’s Central Region.

The first few cases of the fever were recorded in the Eastern Region last weekend, prompting the Ghana Health Service to raise alarm about its prevention.

The emergence of dengue fever in the Central Region marks a critical point which underscores the necessity for a more robust surveillance approach.

But reacting to the situation in an interview on 3FM’s Hot edition, Prof Binka emphasized the inadequacy of the current surveillance system in effectively managing the situation.

He stressed the importance of effectively assessing mosquito density in the affected area to disrupt their transmission patterns.

Initially mistaken for fatigue and malaria, the outbreak in the Eastern Region has evolved into a significant health crisis. The Aedes mosquito-borne disease has already afflicted eleven individuals across five districts, with an additional 57 samples awaiting confirmation at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research.

Survivors of the disease in the Eastern Region recount the arduous path to recovery, enduring extensive treatment at Brenase Polyclinic to combat the debilitating effects of dengue fever.

The escalating presence of Aedes mosquitoes poses a severe threat to farmers in the affected agricultural districts, potentially jeopardizing long-term food security.

As the outbreak spreads to other regions, Prof. Binka advocates proactive measures by health authorities to stay ahead of the disease.

Election 2024: Losers must accept outcome – Jean Mensa assures transparency

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa has reiterated her commitment towards an open and transparent electoral process in the December polls.

According to her, political parties that do not win the upcoming polls must take it in good faith.

“Surely there will be a winner and surely, there will be losers. And so we all call on our contestants to accept the outcome of the elections because we undertake and we commit to ensuring that the elections are free, they are fair, they are credible, they are transparent,” she told journalists on Wednesday, July 17, 2024.

Two viral videos on social media appear to show women affiliated with a political party accusing the EC of registering voters and undertaking an illegal transfer of votes.

The Commission has denied these claims, stating that the videos are misleading and false.

During the presentation of the Democracy Cup to the EC by the leadership of Parliament, Jean Mensa assured transparent elections and urged political leaders to accept the outcome of the polls.

“So like the referee of the match this afternoon we commit to ensuring transparency in all aspects of our work. Our activities are open, as I mentioned, right from the registration through to the declaration of elections, everything is done in the full glare of the public, and nothing is hidden. And we will commit to this to maintaining and ensuring that level of transparency across all aspects of our work,” she explained.

Jean Mensa also entreated the parties to at the end do the polls accept the outcomes of the election.

Meanwhile, the EC has announced that the 2024 Voters Exhibition Exercise will start on August 20 and end on August 27, 2024.

Okudzeto Ablakwa chases Lands Minister with more questions on state lands being sold

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has responded to a statement from the Minister responsible for Lands and Natural Resources, which he perceives as a desperate attempt to refute compelling evidence of state capture under the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration.

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources had in a statement issued on Tuesday, July 16, denied allegations by Ablakwa that the current government is unfairly selling state lands to its allies.

The Ministry categorically stated that these accusations are baseless and should be disregarded by the Ghanaian public.

The Ministry asserted that the Akufo-Addo-led government has not sold any state lands.  The statement further clarified that any government lands currently under public scrutiny were sold during the previous administration of John Mahama, of which Mr. Ablakwa was a member.

The Ministry urged Ghanaians to disregard Mr Ablakwa’s allegations, describing them as politically motivated.

But in a Facebook post on Wednesday, July 17, Ablakwa reiterated his position, noting that Hon. Samuel Abu Jinapor’s recent statement ignored instances of clear state capture that he has consistently criticized both inside and outside of Parliament.

He said the Minister was ” disingenuously selective” in his response to the various cases he’s put forth despite the “incontrovertible overwhelming evidence he has put out.

He went on to chronologically explain each of the allegations he has made so far.

Parks and Gardens Land in Wa

Mr. Ablakwa stated that the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources has validated his expose on the sale of park and garden land in Wa.

He criticized the minister’s attempt to justify the sale with dubious rezoning claims, asserting that such reasoning would not be accepted.

“I commend the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Hon. Martin Adjei Mensah-Korsah, who clearly disagrees with the Lands and Natural Resources Minister by his assurance to Parliament on July 4, 2024, when he responded to my urgent questions that he will take active steps to reclaim the land and demolish the illegal fuel station constructed on the Wa Parks and Gardens land.”.

Parks and Gardens Land in Cantonments

Mr. Ablakwa mentioned that the Lands and Natural Resources Minister alleges that the disputed land was sold during the NDC administration.

He pointed out that during a parliamentary session on July 4, 2024, the Minister for Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development stated clearly and without ambiguity that according to ministry records, the Parks and Gardens land in Cantonments remains under their ownership, with no part of it having been sold.

“The Local Government Minister added in Parliament that Dani Ike has not been able to produce a valid title to the land.

Indeed, the Local Government Minister promised Parliament that he would take steps to remove the containers of the private developer, Dani Ike Real Estate Developers, from the Parks and Gardens land; the Minister has since done exactly that, clearly keeping his promise to Parliament.

I issued a statement commending the local government minister after my tour of the parks and gardens confirmed that the minister had removed the containers.

It seems to me that there are two extremely different versions from two Ministers of State on the same piece of land. It is obviously impossible for both ministers to be right.”

Mr. Ablakwa noted that, notably, the Lands Minister’s account conveniently overlooks the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government’s 2021 initiative to erect a 5-story office building for the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development on the same Parks and Gardens land.

The Tongu North MP pointed out that this decision faced strong opposition from environmentalists and the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUPSA), as indicated in a letter dated July 19, 2021, signed by LUPSA Acting Head Kwadwo Yeboah (see attached intercepted letter).

He noted that LUPSA, in the letter, declined to approve the request to amend the certificate of allocation from the Municipal Chief Executive of the La-Dadekotopon Municipal Assembly.

Mr. Ablakwa added that due to the LUPSA letter and significant public outcry in 2021, the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government abandoned its plans to construct the office complex for the Local Government Ministry on the Parks and Gardens land in Cantonments.

“So the logical question that arises is: if the land had been sold in 2016, how come it was available in 2021 for the government to contemplate constructing government offices on that same piece of land?”

  • E. B. Dubois Centre

Mr. Ablakwa highlighted that his diligent parliamentary oversight uncovered a 50-year agreement titled “Agreement Between the Government of Ghana Represented by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture and the W. E. B. Du Bois Museum Foundation, Ghana, for the Finance, Management, and Transfer of the W. E. B. Du Bois Centre.”

He stated that the 46-page transfer agreement was signed on September 22, 2023, with Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, and Godfred Yeboah Dame, Attorney General and Minister for Justice, signing on behalf of the Government of Ghana.

“I am also attaching a letter from the President’s office showing communication between the President and the privately owned Du Bois Foundation at the receiving end of the 50-year transfer. Significantly, the letter confirms the President’s participation at an upcoming August 27, 2024, sod-cutting ceremony.

Additionally, I am publishing a July 8, 2024, letter signed by the Chief Director of the Ministry of Trade, Arts, and Culture confirming the existence of the 50-year agreement.

I will generously advise the Lands Minister to check with the President and his colleague Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Attorney General, and Tourism what the new plan for the Du Bois Center is. They may even be kind to add that David Adjaye has already received his US$2.5 million payment for his redesign of the center.”

Judicial Service Land

Mr. Ablakwa pointed out that the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources’ own account, particularly paragraphs 25 to 27, is highly informative.

“Paragraph 25: In a letter dated June 27, 2017, the Office of the President directed the Lands Commission to withdraw the lease executed in favour of Frimps Oil Co. Ltd., together with twenty-three (23) other leases.

“Paragraph 26: Subsequently, on September 22, 2017, the then Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. John Peter Amewu, constituted a committee to investigate issues pertaining to the Accra Redevelopment Scheme.

“Paragraph 27: Following the submission of the Committee’s Report, the then Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, by a letter dated December 28, 2017, directed that the lease granted to Frimps Oil Co. Ltd. in the year 2015, together with seven (7) other leases that had been cancelled pursuant to the directive of the Office of the President, be restored, and the lease was accordingly restored.”

The MP for Tongu North noted that according to the highlighted paragraphs, the Lands Commission, acting on President Akufo-Addo’s directive on June 27, 2017, revoked the lease for Frimps Oil and 23 others.

He remarked that strangely, on December 28, 2017, the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration reinstated the lease for Frimps Oil and seven others, but not all 23.

Mr. Ablakwa emphasised that while the Lands Minister’s efforts to justify these actions may be well-founded, the current government had the authority and opportunity to withhold the reinstatement, especially since they chose not to reinstate all 28 leases but only 8.

He added that it is crucial to note that the demolition of the judges’ bungalows occurred under this government.

“It is also under this government that the private developers defied a court injunction of November 28, 2023, and proceeded to demolish the final set of bungalows.”

Ghana Prisons Service Land at Roman Ridge

Mr. Ablakwa expressed his concern over the Lands Minister’s description of his colleague in government and a senior advisor to Vice President Bawumia as simply ‘one Prof. Appiah-Adu.’

He clarified that he has consistently mentioned that Prof. Appiah-Adu asserts he purchased the Roman Ridge land in 2005 during President Kufuor’s administration.

The MP emphasized that the timing of the purchase does not justify the bold attempts to encroach upon land that the Ghana Prisons Service leadership strongly asserts belongs to the service.

“Here too, the Minister for the Interior was in Parliament on July 5, 2024, to respond to my urgent questions, where he confirmed my impeccable oversight findings and assured Parliament that his ministry would support the appeal filed by the Ghana Prisons Service as they do not agree with the claims of Bawumia’s senior advisor.

It is quite disappointing that the lands minister failed to acknowledge in his statement that the Ghana Prisons Service has filed an appeal against the earlier decision in favour of Prof. Appiah-Adu.”

Conclusion

The Tongu North MP pointed out the pervasive impact of state capture in our daily lives.

He mentioned that just yesterday, long-serving distinguished public servants residing in Roman Ridge Flats were informed during a meeting chaired by the Chief Director of the Ministry of Works and Housing that they must prepare to vacate, as their flats are affected by the extensively misused Accra redevelopment policy.

Mr. Ablakwa said that, regrettably for the Minister of Lands, lengthy press statements emphasizing selective issues, ostentatious displays of patriotism, and efforts at partisan comparisons cannot sway the Ghanaian people when they witness blatant state capture unfolding before them.

“I need not remind the Minister of his colleague who willed parts of our treasured Achimota Forest and Ramsar Site to his nephew forever.

We can assure Minister Abu Jinapor that just as we defeated State Capture and took back our SSNIT hotels a few days ago, so shall we defeat State Capture under his watch and repossess all our looted lands on the day of reckoning?”

Port City FC to unveil Kobina Amissah as their new Head Coach.

Veteran football manager and division one expert Coach Kobina Amissah, has exclusively revealed On X Sports on TVXYZ that he is moving to newly promoted Ghana division one side, Port City .

He signed three 3 years contract with the Harbour city, Tema based club and he begins work with the club Wednesday 17th July 2024.

Coach Kobina Amissah has commended Samartex 96 for having a good season. He also added, it’s a club every coach will want to coach there because they have everything a club should have.

Added, he felt very bad for not getting national team appointment, because he was doing better than some coaches leading the national teams .

The majority of Ghanaian coaches are so matured to allow bribe influence their player selections, to be honest, we don’t reject a genuine gift, but I don’t believe my colleagues License ‘A’ coaches in Ghana would be influenced by money to fix players in a game.

‘I was attempted and approached with a huge amount of money as a bribe to accept a footballer in my team when I was at Berekum Chelsea by the club owner through a football agent but I rejected the offer, since then the C.E.O Mr Kyereme gained a lot of respect and trust in me.’

He advised Ghanaian coaches to cease from the bad habit of exchanging gift before registering players in their various teams.

He has never taken a bribe from any football player or any club administrator in his coaching career.

Coach Amissah denied alleged player interference led to his exit at Gold stars.

I left Bibiani GoldStars FC after the Ghana premier League promotion because my contract expired and I need a new challenge.

“I need total rest, total recovery, because of all the hard work I’ve done. During the Anas expose, I also worked through the Normalisation period and the COVID season. So I feel like I need to change the environment a bit.

“I am tired and I need a break. I am not quitting the game. I am too young for that, but I need time for myself to recharge,” the former Berekum Chelsea coach added.

However on all five occasions, Amissah failed to complete a Premier League season with a team he has helped promoted.

In 2008 he helped Berekum Chelsea gain promotion, in 2011 he helped Sekondi Hasaacas back up, he then moved to Elmina Sharks where they were promoted in 2015, Gold stars 2021 and Nsoatreman FC 2023 .

In these five teams, Amissah only started the Premier League season once, and that was with Elmina Sharks where he was sacked halfway through the season.

There’s no conflict and bad blood between me and the club CEO AKwasi Aidoo, In fact we are still friends and we communicate always like all the other teams I coached before.

Ghanaian clubs need Talents scout coaches to enhance the managers work.

Elsewhere in Europe like, Liverpool, Man Utd, Chelsea, etc have employed talents haunt coaches to go round and identified good talented players for the teams and why can’t we do the same here to support effort of the head coach?

He has also denied the reports of practicing black magic or superstition ‘juju’ to qualify teams to the Ghana premier league.

He claimed, some coaches and players do it and it work for them based on their religious faith either you are a Christian, a Muslim and traditionalist, we all pray before every activities in our daily life but I don’t put my trust in juju’, it’s all about hard work and determination with a good plans and quality materials.

Sack Elizabeth Ohene; dissolve SSNIT’s board or we continue to strike – Organised Labour to Govt

Organised Labour has called for a total  overhaul of the board of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) for what is says is a breach of public trust.

The union also wants the immediate removal of the top management team over the botched decision to offload 60% of SSNIT shares in four hotels to a private entity owned by the Minister of Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

The demands of the labour unions come after a sustained protest against the intended sale of SSNIT’s 60 per cent shares in the four hotels.

Although the protest eventually led to the termination of the deal by SSNIT, Organised Labour believes the current board and management’s participation in the widely-criticised and contentious deal has exposed a significant failure in their (SSNIT) decision-making and accountability, demonstrating a clear disconnect from public opinion.

“SSNIT’s function is to ensure social security for the population and so the leadership [of Organised Labour] recognised that the way by which the hotels were being sold was flawed and if you look at the content of the letter, we said we were not going to call off the strike until SSNIT board is dissolved,” Deputy Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour, Kenneth Koomson said on CBS on Monday.

Mr. Koomson used the platform to highlight the contributions of the Ghanaian worker toward Ghana’s independence.

“Ghana’s independence wouldn’t have been possible without the involvement of workers and politicians should know that. The unity displayed on July 12 is just the tip of the iceberg, and going forward, Organised Labour is going to ensure that the ordinary Ghanaian is well taken care of,” he added.

Meanwhile. Organised Labour is set to hold an emergency meeting today to decide on the way forward for the nationwide strike after the dramatic changes that followed the group’s declaration of a nationwide industrial action last Friday.

Among issues to be considered during the meeting today will be the fate of the management and Board of Directors of SSNIT following the role they played in the failed attempt to sell state assets to government cronies.

Trump appears to be SHOT in the ear during rally in Pennsylvania

Gunshots have reportedly been fired at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania, with the former president rushed off-stage by security staff.

Trump appeared to fall to the ground as he was giving a speech. He was quickly surrounded by armed security and stayed down for around a minute.

He then rose to his feet and pumped his fist in the air, before being escorted off stage and into a vehicle. He was then driven away from the scene.

Video appeared to show blood on his ear as he was taken away. The former president appeared to be clutching the side of his head as he fell to the ground.

Republican senator for Ohio, J.D. Vance, said in a post on the X social media platform: “Everyone join me in praying for our President Trump and everyone at that rally. I hope everyone is ok.”

The US Secret Service said Trump was now “safe” and that it had implemented protective measures around the former president.

It also said that an investigation had been launched – but did not give any further details.

“This is now an active Secret Service investigation and further information will be released when available,” Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said in a post on X.

Trump’s campaign said he was “fine” following the incident.

“President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act,” spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement.

“He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility. More details will follow.”

The White House said President Joe Biden had received an “initial briefing” on the incident.
