Govt imposes curfew on Bawku after deadly clashes

The Ministry of the Interior has imposed a curfew on Bawku in the Upper East Region, effective Monday, October 28, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM daily, following renewed and deadly clashes in the area.

The decision was reached during an emergency meeting of the National Security Council, chaired by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in response to escalating violence tied to a long-standing chieftaincy dispute.

Tensions flared after the return of a rival chief, Alhaji Seidu Abagre, from exile, whose presence has intensified conflict in the region.

This latest unrest has tragically led to the loss of at least eight lives, with several others injured in violent encounters, including an ambush on travellers.

In a statement released on Monday, the Ministry of the Interior cited Abagre’s continued presence as a significant threat to public safety and peace in Bawku, necessitating the curfew.

The ministry further urged residents to comply fully with the directive and cooperate with security agencies working to restore order.

Security officials have been mobilized to enforce the curfew strictly, with the ministry warning that anyone found violating the curfew will face legal consequences.

The government’s efforts, according to the ministry, are aimed at securing stability in Bawku and preventing further escalation of violence.

Bolgatanga Nursing Trainees unhappy about 31-month delayed allowances

Students of the Bolgatanga Nursing Training College in the Bolgatanga municipality of the Upper East Region have called on the Akufo-Addo government to fulfil its promise by disbursing their allowances to them.

Some of the students who lamented what they describe as a deliberate delay of the allowances promised them by the government indicated that they have received only 5 months of their accumulated funds of over 30 months.

The concerned students accused the Vice President and flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, of falsely claiming that their overdue allowances have been cleared.

According to the students, his statements are far from the truth, insisting he misled Ghanaians by saying that all outstanding claims have been paid.

Background

In May this year, Dr. Bawumia stated emphatically at the launch of International Nurses Day that the government would release a total of 177 million cedis to cover overdue allowances.

He assured trainees that “come this Thursday, the Controller and Accountant General shall transfer funds to the Ministry of Finance for onward crediting of the trainee allowances accounts. So, hopefully, by next week the ‘Alawa’ will drop.”

However, five (5) months after the Vice President’s assurance, the students who spoke to XYZ reporter Akora Kofi Darko in Bolgatanga explained that they have not yet received any funds in their accounts.

hreatening to vote against the NPP if the funds are not released.

Speaking during a visit by NDC Running Mate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang to Bolgatanga as part of her Upper East Region tour, the students expressed their frustration on the delayed allowances, threatening to vote against the NPP if the funds are not released.

One nursing student lamented, “I am in my third year, but since I started school, I have only received an allowance for five months. I am pleading with the government to pay us our allowance because we need money to pay fees.”

Another student added, “They paid us for five months, but not all of us received it. They keep promising us that they will pay, but I don’t believe them. I think because we are in an election year, they paid the five months just to deceive us.”

Many students rely on these allowances to cover tuition and other essential expenses, leaving them feeling abandoned and disillusioned.

The SRC president of Bolgatanga Nursing and Training College, Ayeebono Bright, did not hold back on the issue.

“For me, I won’t say the government has paid because the months owed do not add up. Out of my three years in school, I have received an allowance for only five months,” he stated.

NDC’s Assurance

Professor Opoku-Agyemang urged them not to be deceived by promises of freebies from the NPP since it was clear that they would not fulfill those promises.

She assured them of a better governance by the NDC and its flag bearer, John Mahama, who has better policies for the nurses when they complete their programmes.

She mentioned that the next NDC government will promptly post them and get them sustainable jobs by expanding health infrastructure across the country.

I smell sinister motive behind renewed Bawku conflict; Be resolute – Mahama to feuding factions

Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Mahama has appealed to the feuding factions in the Bawku crisis to exercise extreme patience to prevent the renewed conflict from escalating.

He describes the fresh development which left at least eight dead after the recent exchange of gunfire as instigated provocation that must not be allowed to fuel the volatile situation in the area.

John Mahama who was addressing a mini durbar at Saboba to kick start his campaign tour of the Northern region said there are sinister hands trying to stoke fires of ethnic conflict in the Bawku area and they must be resisted.

Though government has beefed up security in the area, Mr. Mahama believes resilience is key to sustaining the peace

“I appeal to the people of the Bawku Area to exercise patience and restraint. We know there are some sinister hands trying to stoke the fires of ethic conflicts. They should should not allow themselves to be used to provoke violence”

The recent attacks after a relative peace in the area raises eyebrows especially after Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga indicated that the National Security Minister, Albert Kan-Dapaah, is given some six million Ghana cedis (GHS6,000,000.00) monthly by the Finance Ministry to manage the Bawku conflict.

This, Mr. Ayariga says, translates into a whopping eighteen million Ghana cedis (Ghc18,000,000.00) each quarter.

Speaking on Woezor TV on Saturday, August 3, the outspoken MP said despite the huge sum of money allocated to the Ministry there is no evidence of work done.

Subsequently, he dared Mr. Kan-Dapaah to respond to his allegations.

The US said as Ghana goes to the polls, it is committed to supporting and advancing democracy in the African country and around the world.

This visa restriction policy would apply only to specific individuals who undermine democracy and is not directed at the Ghanaian people nor the Government of Ghana.

According to a press release by Secretary of State, Antony J. Blinken,Ghana has achieved three decades of democratic elections and the peaceful transfer of power between parties – a record to be proud of and a model to cherish.

The statement also mentioned that “the United States’ readiness to impose visa restrictions if circumstances warrant is an example of our support for the aspirations of all Ghanaians for a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process that reflects the will of the people.”

Below is the statement:

_This visa restriction policy is pursuant to Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, and allows the Department of State to implement visa restrictions for individuals believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining democracy in Ghana, including through the manipulation or rigging of the electoral process; the use of violence to intimidate, coerce or prevent people from exercising their rights to freedoms of association and peaceful assembly; the use of measures designed to intimidate, coerce or prevent political party representatives, voters, or members of civil society or the media from voicing or disseminating their views; or engaging in any other activity designed to improperly influence the conduct or outcome of an election. GRIDCo blames recent ‘Dumsor’ on gas shortage stemming from commercial issues

The recent ongoing power outages in parts of the country are due to a gas shortage to power thermal plants, the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has clarified.

The power producer said the situation has affected electricity transmission in the country.

There has been irregular power supply in many parts of the country, escalating fears of the return of incessant power outages known as ‘Dumsor.’

GRIDCo’s Corporate Communications Manager, Dzifa Bampoh, explained that the gas supply challenges stem from “commercial issues” involving agreements, payments, and negotiations with gas suppliers.

She added that this bottleneck has reduced generation capacity, leaving GRIDCo unable to transmit adequate power to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

“Currently GRIDCo as far we are aware as a transmission entity, we are aware of some commercial challenges with supply in reference to gas. When we say commercial challenges, it means there are agreements, payment, and negotiations that need to be made with the gas suppliers,” she said in an interview with Joy News.

“So for us, we are unable to provide the full quantum of power supply that ECG would need to plan in the country just because there have been commercial issues related to the gas,” she added.

Madam Bampoh stressed that the outages are unrelated to the shutdown of Sunon Asogli Power Limited, which halted operations due to ECG’s debt.

Even if the Sunon Asogli plant were operational, gas supply shortages would still prevent it from functioning effectively, she noted.

“It doesn’t even have to do with the recent outages. The current outages we are experiencing including myself are really because we don’t have the full quantum of indigenous gas supply in Ghana to meet our demands.”

She assured that the situation would stabilize once the government resolves the commercial challenges with gas suppliers, restoring consistent power generation and transmission.

Bawumia misleads Bolgatanga Nursing Trainees on allowances

Nursing students at the Bolgatanga Nursing and Training College have accused the Vice President and flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, of falsely claiming that their overdue allowances have been cleared.

Healthcare professionals are now demanding immediate payment of all their overdue allowances, warning that they will vote massively against the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government if their demands are not met.

EC makes revisions to 2024 ballot statistics; 20 polling stations affected

The Electoral Commission (EC) says it has done slight revisions to the 2024 Ballot Statistics due to decisions made by District Registration Review Officers (DRROs) and High Courts.

The revision is also as a result of updates after the Re-Exhibition of the Provisional Voters Register.

The electoral management body says the adjustments will affect 20 polling stations that will require the printing of additional ballot booklets.

In a press release by the EC on Monday afternoon indicates that the revised ballot statistics, including the list of affected polling stations, have been shared with all Political Parties, Independent Presidential Candidates, and the designated Printing Firms.

The EC has attached a detailed schedule of the affected polling stations for the public’s reference.

The Electoral Commission urged the public to take note of the adjustments as part of its commitment to ensuring a transparent and efficient electoral process for the December 2024 elections.

Speaker Bagbin must stand by his decision to save Ghana from being sold by NPP – Abraham Koomson

The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has urged Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to uphold his decision regarding the four vacant parliamentary seats.

Mr. Koomson warns that reversing the ruling could shift the majority to the NPP, which he argues would not benefit the country, as he believes the NPP has previously exploited its numbers for self-serving purposes.

Abraham Koomson, Secretary -General, GFL

In an interview on Ahotor FM, Mr. Koomson stated that an NDC majority in Parliament would better serve Ghana’s interests as the 2024 elections approach.

He called for calm amid ongoing tensions between the Supreme Court and Parliament over the vacant seats, which recently led to an adjournment of parliamentary proceedings.

On October 18, the Supreme Court directed Parliament to allow the four MPs to retain their seats until it resolved the case.

The Apex Court this overturned the Speaker’s October 17 declaration that had marked the seats as vacant. The lawmakers in question include:

  1. Cynthia Morrison, NPP MP for Agona West, Central Region, running as an independent.
  2. Kwadwo Asante, NPP MP for Suhum, Eastern Region, also running independently.
  3. Andrew Asiamah Amoako, independent MP for Fomena, Ashanti Region, now standing as an NPP candidate.
  4. Peter Kwakye Ackah, NDC MP for Amenfi Central.

This development follows a petition from former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu, who invoked Article 97 (1)(g) of the Constitution, stating that lawmakers must vacate their seats if they depart from the party under which they were elected.

Abraham Koomson emphasized that maintaining an NDC majority would serve the national interest and urged Speaker Bagbin to stand firm in his decision.

Agona West NPP Nasara Coordinator allegedly shot in campaign clash at Nyarkrom

Agona West NPP Constituency Nasara Coordinator, Haruna Rashid, is in critical condition after being shot during a campaign clash in Agona Nyarkrom, Central Region.

The incident occurred around 9 p.m. while Rashid was traveling with the convoy of Agona West NPP Parliamentary Candidate, Chris Arthur.

Three other individuals were injured.

According to police sources, supporters of Chris Arthur and Cynthia Morrison, a rival candidate, encountered each other while campaigning in the same area.

Tensions reportedly escalated when Mr Arthur’s convoy encountered a roadblock allegedly set up by Ms Morrison’s supporters.

As the convoy attempted to turn away, shots were fired, and Rashid, who also serves as Mr Arthur’s campaign manager, was struck in the ribs.

Chris Arthur recounted the incident, explaining that as they neared the Nyarkrom Township, they encountered the blockage.

“We decided to change direction, but it was too late,” he said.

Mr Arthur described how unidentified individuals first poured alcohol on their driver, causing him to lose control before two men approached and shot Rashid.

Rashid was initially rushed to the Agona Swedru Municipal Hospital and has since been transferred to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for further treatment due to the severity of his injuries.

Agona West NPP Constituency Chairman, Alhaji Jibri Tanko, has condemned the violence, warning all supporters to avoid intimidation.

“We will not allow anyone to intimidate us in this election,” he stated firmly.

In addition, two supporters from Cynthia Morrison’s camp were also injured by gunfire and are receiving treatment at the Agona Nyarkrom Health Center as investigations continue.
