Former MP for Adentan and a leading member of the Movement for Change, Yaw Buaben Asamoa, has chastised the governing NPP over the leadership impasse in Parliament.
The former National Communication Director of the NPP in a statement said the party is resorting to the court to “sidestep the leadership duty of being honest with the people.”
According to him, the NPP’s antics only “puts the Court in a bad light with negative implications for the Courts’ own integrity.”
He said the 2 NPP MPs: Kwadwo Asante of Suhum, and Cynthia Morrison of Agona West, who have decided to cross carpet in Parliament automatically forfeit their party membership according to Article 3(9) of the NPP Constitution.
Buaben Asamoa also said the seat of the Fomena MP who was elected to Parliament as an independent candidate but has decided to re-run on the ticket of the NPP should be declared vacant just as the constitution of the country states.
Instead of the NPP running to court for interpretation, Buaben Asamoa argued that, the loss of status does not require formal communication to the Speaker of Parliament .
Below is his statement:
Integrity is the Heart of Leadership
If Article 3(9) of the NPP Constitution is unconstitutional, the leadership of the Party, Parliamentary Caucus and Government, ought to have the integrity to say so. Using the Supreme Court to sidestep the leadership duty of being honest with the people, only puts the Court in a bad light with negative implications for the Courts’ own integrity.
We are where we are in Parliament, held to ransom by the NPP in power, only because of their selfish party preservation interests. Certainly not national stability.
Article 3(9) of the NPP Constitution reads as follows;
“FORFEITURE OF MEMBERSHIP
(1) A Member of the Party, who stands as an independent candidate against the officially elected member of the Party, or who joins or declares his or her support for another Political Party, or for an independent candidate, when the Party has sponsored a candidate in a general or by-election, automatically forfeits his or her membership of the Party.”
There is nothing futuristic about the clear provision above. The loss of party membership or parliamentary standing, is immediate. It requires no notice or hearing. You “sack yourself” the moment you pick nomination forms and file against the Party Candidate or you voluntarily declare support for someone filing against the Party Candidate.
Accordingly, Article 3(9) of the NPP Constitution has disqualified Hon. Cynthia Morrison and Hon. Kwadwo Asante from membership of the NPP. Right now, they have no business pretending to represent the NPP in Parliament. Unless the NPP Party Constitution is declared unconstitutional, the forfeiture of their right to represent NPP in Parliament is automatic.
Article 3(9) of the NPP constitution feeds seamlessly into Article 97(1)(g) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, which instructs the Speaker of Parliament in clear unambiguous terms as follows:
“97. (1) A member of Parliament shall vacate his seat in Parliament –
(g) if he leaves the party of which he was a member at the time of his election to Parliament to join another party or seeks to remain in Parliament as an independent member….”
The loss of status does not require formal communication to the Speaker. Filing of nominations as independents is constructive notice to the Speaker. Based on the constructive notice offered by the filing and or Notice of Poll, the Speaker must recognise the new status of Hons. Cynthia Morrison and Kwadwo Asante as well as Peter Yaw Kwakye-Ackah of the NDC, as independent MPs, and readjust their Parliamentary standing accordingly.
Hon. Andrew Asiamah Amoako is affected by Article 97(1)(h) which reads;
“if he was elected a member of Parliament as an independent candidate and joins a political party.”
Having re-joined the NPP by filing as their candidate in Fomena, he has no business sitting in as the Second Deputy Speaker. Parliament must necessarily reconstitute the Speakership.
But for preserving the interests of a “Partycracy”, Parliament ought to be sitting in its freshly reorganised NDC Majority and NPP Minority. The rules are unambiguous and require no further interpretation.
Resolution of the impasse in Parliament requires the Supreme Court to be extremely conscious of Chapter One and Article 125 (1)(2) and (3) of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana. If the authority embedded therein is upheld by the Court in full, it will cement the respect needed to grow a society of law and order, and make the Court the final source of objective refuge for all.
After all, the Court is supposed to be the epitome of Rule of Law, and under no circumstance must its conduct move it into doubt that requires another institution to resolve.
There is none beyond the Court as our refuge, and it must manifestly act as such.
The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has urged Ghanaian workers to reject the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its flag bearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
The labour unionist argued that Dr. Bawumia, who has served as the head of the government’s Economic Management Team, has led Ghana’s economy into a ditch.
He said the NPP’s policies have been harmful to workers’ financial well-being.
Speaking on Ahotor FM, Mr. Koomson argued that Dr. Bawumia’s track record on economic issues makes him unfit to lead the country as president.
“The challenges Ghanaian workers face today can be traced to policies pushed by the Economic Management Team,” he remarked, stressing that workers must reflect on their struggles when they head to the polls on December 7.
Abraham Koomson called on his fellow workers to “vote wisely,” particularly in response to what he described as widespread frustration with the current economic hardships.
He urged those struggling with unemployment to remain steadfast and use the ballot box as a way to voice their discontent, even if they are offered incentives to vote otherwise.
“If someone gives you money to vote, take it,” he advised, “but remember to vote with your conscience for a better future.”
In addition to rallying workers, Abraham Koomson also called on the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to present strong leadership and prevent what he views as a potentially damaging outcome for workers should the NPP secure another term.
According to him, the impact of an NPP victory would have far-reaching negative consequences for both citizens and the labor force, emphasizing the need for a change to stabilize and improve Ghana’s economic landscape.
Mr. Koomson’s remarks highlight the growing discontent within Ghana’s labor sector as the 2024 election approaches, with workers increasingly vocal about the challenges they have endured under the current administration.

ECG noted that Clou customers may experience some challenges using the ECG Power App during this period.
In light of this, the distribution company urged customers to visit the nearest ECG Prepayment Vendor, District Office, or call their Contact Center.
“ECG regrets the inconvenience that will arise as a result of the exercise,” part of the statement added.
Anti-corruption campaigner Emmanuel Wilson Jr has raised concerns about the heightening level of impunity and corruption in the country.
He attributes the wanton dissipation of public funds to the lack of political will on the part of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government to clamp down on graft among appointees, since the duo took over the country’s governance in the past 7 years.
Wilson Jr, the Chief Crusader of pressure group, Crusaders Against Corruption, was commenting on the nature of Ghana’s Asset Declaration Act which mandates persons appointed to high government offices to declare their assets before assuming office.
Former Auditor General of Ghana, Daniel Domelovo recently called for the ACT to be amended and enforced as a way of protecting public funds.
He said a future government ought to ensure the laws on asset declarations are amended to check the lifestyles of government officials, while urging that the Auditor General be given enough powers to chase officials who misappropriate state funds.
Wilson Jr who agreed with Domelovo said it was time the Asset Declaration Act was amended to reward citizens who are able to provide information contrary to what officials file as their assets or liabilities.
“Currently, Ghana’s Asset Declaration regime is a big joke and needs to be amended,” he told Piesie Okrah on Power Kasiebo on TV XYZ.
“When a future president ensures those laws are amended, politicians who occupy high positions will work with caution and the country will save millions of cedis,” he stated in Akan.
Given the current nature of the Legislature where it is difficult for both sides of the law- making chamber to pass stringent laws to check members and other powerful officials, Wilson argued that a president who is concerned about tackling corruption would work tirelessly to ensure that appointees adhere to the Assets Declaration Act.
Asked if that could happen soon, Wilson Jr contended that this current administration has lost the opportunity to enforce the laws, stating the development is the reason that many corruption related incidences involving ministers and other high ranking officers have not been investigated to their logical conclusion.
“The current Vice president, Dr Bawumia who is also the presidential candidate of the NPP does not talk about corruption and it has been so since he assumed office.
“If there is anyone who can give the country hope in that regard is former president John Mahama, the presidential candidate of the opposition NDC,” Wilson asserted.
To him, the former president while in office appointed Daniel Domelovo as the country’s Auditor General and did not care whoever the Auditor General would chase over graft related issues.
He said Mahama ensured the incarceration of his own appointee, Abuga Pele, a member of parliament whose office embezzled state funds among others.
“Mr Mahama still talks tough about corruption and has announced he will cancel ex-gratia when voted for. He has outlined other stringent measures to tackle corruption in his government which we–Crusaders Against Corruption– find progressive,” Wilson stated.
Nevertheless, Wilson Jr said his group will continue to advocate for graft to be tackled head-on as being done regardless of which party will attain power after the December 7 elections.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has raised concerns regarding the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to contract YASARKO for printing materials for the upcoming elections.
The party’s “Eagle Eyes” initiative, aimed at monitoring the ballot printing process, has encountered significant issues with YASARKO’s performance.
Dr Edward Omane Boamah, NDC’s Director of Elections and IT, in a Facebook post, expressed scepticism about the EC’s vetting process for YASARKO, alleging that the company has failed to meet its obligations consistently, leading to frustration among NDC agents who are monitoring the situation 24/7.
He pointed out that the repeated “excuses” from YASARKO raise questions about the company’s competence and the legitimacy of the contract award.
The NDC’s agents suspect that YASARKO may have intended to print ballot papers offsite, a move that could jeopardize the integrity of the electoral materials.
Furthermore, the team has reported cases of excess ballots being printed, prompting them to secure an agreement with printing companies to ensure accountability for any surplus before disposal.
The two suspects standing trial for the murder of a 10-year-old boy in Kasoa have been found guilty of both murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
The crime, committed in 2021, has taken three years to reach its conclusion. The High Court delivered the final verdict, sentencing the second accused, Nicholas Kini, who was 18 at the time of the incident, to life in prison.
Meanwhile, the first accused, who was 15 years old when the crime occurred, has been referred to the juvenile court for sentencing as the High Court lacks jurisdiction to sentence minors.
Facts of the Case
According to investigators, the first accused admitted during interrogation that the plan to kill the victim stemmed from watching a video of a spiritualist who promised wealth in exchange for GH¢5,000 and human blood.
The first accused revealed that he contacted the second accused, Nicholas Kini, who suggested they consult the fetish priest. The priest allegedly demanded GH¢5,000 and human blood. As part of the plot, they first intended to kidnap the boy and demand the ransom from his parents.
The victim was lured to an uncompleted building by the first accused, under the guise of receiving a game. Once there, he was struck on the head with a stick and later with cement blocks after pleading for mercy. The boy was buried alive, with the pathologist testifying that the cause of death was suffocation.
Prosecution’s Case
The prosecution’s first witness was called in March 2023. Seven witnesses, including the victim’s father, the first accused’s family members, and police officers, testified during the trial. The detective who investigated the case and the pathologist who performed the post-mortem were also key witnesses.
The victim’s father testified that he had returned home from a work trip the morning of the incident. After having breakfast with his family, including his son, he took a nap, which was interrupted by his wife’s screams upon discovering their son’s body at an uncompleted building near their home.
The first accused’s sister testified that she had seen her brother and Nicholas Kini at the same building but was told to leave. She later informed her mother, who notified the father, Richard Mensah.
Mensah testified that he uncovered the boy’s body and that his son confessed to the killing, implicating Kini as well. Police testimony confirmed that Kini also confessed to striking the victim with a club.
Case of Accused Persons
The first accused admitted his involvement, pleading guilty to conspiracy but not guilty to murder. The second accused, Nicholas Kini, denied any involvement and pleaded not guilty to both charges.
He claimed that he was not at the crime scene and provided an alibi, saying he was with his grandfather. However, the court found no evidence to support this alibi.
Final Address to the Jury
The prosecution urged the jury to find both teenagers guilty, citing strong evidence of their involvement in both murder and conspiracy. The defense, however, argued for their acquittal.
In summing up the case, Justice Lydia Osei Marfo appealed to the jury to consider the facts carefully and uphold the conscience of the nation. After deliberating, the seven-member jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict on both charges.
Nicholas Kini was sentenced to life imprisonment, while the juvenile court will determine the fate of the first accused.
Solomon Owusu, a senior campaign team member of the political group, Movement for Change, has debunked reports that the party’s ‘victory walk led by Alan Kyerematen in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi, was not patronised.
He said the group was overwhlemed by the outpoor love for Mr kyerematen and the Movement by thousands of residents over the weekend, stressing that the success of the campaign was not in doubt.
Mr Owusu who was part of the organisers of the victory walk explained that some members of the campaign team of the governing NPP presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, had to rush to sponsor news reports seeking to water down the impact of the campaign activities of Alan in the region which is described as the stronghold of the NPP.
Speaking on Accra FM’s Citizen Show, Owusu who defected from the NPP with Alan, a former Minister of Trade and Industry, stated that the victory walk was successful and had sent shock waves to the camp of the governing party led by Vice President Bawumia.
“The reports are from tabloids the NPP control. Those online portals are not serious because the people of Ashanti Region showed Alan Kyerematen so much love suh that the NPP leadership in the region had to run from one radio station to the other, trying to divert attention from our activities,” he said.
“The NPP have clearly seen that lan is a force to reckon with in the Ashanti Region. Alan knows the Ashanti Region more than anyone in the NPP. They are losing in the region but want to sponsor fake news to massage some people’s ego.”
He said the aftermath of the walk where the youth pledged massive support for Alan Kyerematen has freightened Dr Bawumia and his team which is clear about their impendinding defeat in the region.
“The walk drew thousands of supporters and floating voters across the Ashanti region and the NPP know they have lost the battle already. Bawumia has to push his wife Samira to start a tour in the region to counter ours but the people have already made up their minds.”
“If you want someone to counter Alan, an astute politician who knows what he is doing, you’ll realise tasking Samira to counter him is a big joke. who is Samira to counter alan?” he quizzed.
Ahead of the election, Owusu cautioned that members of the Movement for Change will intensify its vigilance on election day, alleging that although the NPP has planned to rig the polls, they will crash their agenda.
“We will police the polls very wel because some of us will be agents on election day and we will ensure the NPP does not orchestrate anything silly,” he said while downplaying the strength od the NPP in the Ashanti Region.
“Bawumia can’t sleep because we have taken over their stronghold and the people are calling for change,” he added.
Meanwhile, the independent presidential Candidate and leader for Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, has called on the people of Ghana to join him in his quest to break the duopoly of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the country’s politics.
He has been touring some parts of the country and promising a transformation of the country’s trade, agric and economy, adding that his Great Transformation Plan (GTP) is the best thing to happen to Ghana.
Otumfuo’s Support
Earlier this month, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, hailed the vision of Alan Kyerematen, which has been documented and named the Great Transformation Plan (GTP).
The King of Asanteman said the comprehensive GTP is a visionary development blueprint capable of steering Ghana onto the path of sustainable economic growth and prosperity.
Alan Kyerematen, greeting Otumfuo Osei Tutu
Asantehene made the remarks on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, when Alan Kyerematen, accompanied by his running mate, Kwame Owusu Danso and some of the leaders of the Alliance, visited the Overlord of Asante at the Manhyia Palace.
In his brief address to the politicians, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II urged the presidential candidate to ensure that Ghanaians understand the depth and impact of the GTP, as it holds the solutions to the country’s most pressing problems.
The king’s words were a reflection of the growing sentiment among Ghanaians in various sectors who believe that Mr Kyerematen’s GTP is the right plan to transform the nation’s fortunes.
The Asantehene’s endorsement of the GTP is not an isolated voice. Many prominent figures from Ghana’s private sector, academia, business community, and civil society organizations have also heaped praise on the plan.
The visit was part of a larger Caravan Campaign Tour in the Ashanti Region ahead of the 7th December General Election.
The National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has reiterated the party’s decision not to sign the peace pact proposed by the National Peace Council ahead of the December 7, 2024 elections.
The peace pact, designed to ensure political leaders commit to maintaining peace during and after the elections, has been endorsed by various stakeholders.
However, the NDC remains firm in its refusal.
During his campaign tour of the Banda Constituency in the Bono Region, Mr. Nketia made it clear that the NDC would only consider signing the agreement if those responsible for the violence and deaths during the 2020 general elections are arrested and brought to justice.
“We will not sign this document until the killers from the 2020 elections are arrested and prosecuted.
The government has failed to hold those criminals, disguised in security uniforms, accountable because they acted in the interest of the ruling party during the last elections,” he stated.
Citing the tragic killing of an innocent teacher in Banda during the 2020 elections, Mr Asiedu Nketia emphasized the party’s stance that justice must be served before any commitments to future peace agreements can be made.
“People lost their lives, and nothing has been done about it. Yet, you want me to sign a document so that the same atrocities can be repeated in 2024.
Those responsible for these heinous crimes against democracy are walking free, while the families of victims continue to suffer,” he added.
He said the NDC’s refusal to sign the peace pact comes as a significant stance in the lead-up to the 2024 elections to demand justice for past election violence before committing to future peace agreements.
President of the National Association of Concerned Small-Scale Miners of Ghana, Michael Kwadwo Peprah, has assured miners across the country of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) commitment towards encouraging sustainable small scale mining.
The NDC’s campaign in Mankranso in the Ahafo Ano South, Atwima Nwabiagya, Atwimah Mponua, districts of the Ashanti Region sought to engage small-scale miners on the party’s manifesto, particularly in addressing the challenges surrounding licensing and documentation in the sector.
Michael Kwadwo Peprah whiles addressing the miners highlighted the ongoing difficulties faced by small-scale miners in obtaining the necessary permits and licenses to operate legally.
He stressed that many miners, despite following the correct procedures, still struggle with acquiring the required documentation, leading to frustration within the industry.
“The main issue is licensing and documentation. We know that a lot of miners are doing the right thing but don’t have the documents to prove it. Currently, obtaining a license often means traveling all the way to Accra, which is a significant burden for many,” Peprah stated.
He endorsed the NDC’s manifesto, which proposes decentralizing the mining licensing process. The party plans to allow miners to obtain licenses at the district level, eliminating the need for long trips to Accra.
This change, according to Kwadwo Peprah, will make the licensing process more accessible for small-scale miners across the country.
“The NDC promises to bring the licensing process to the district level. This will make it easier for miners to obtain the necessary permits without the hassle of traveling to Accra. We will also bring in technocrats who will help monitor operations to ensure sustainable mining practices,” he added.
Peprah emphasized that the NDC is not opposed to small-scale mining, but is firmly against mining activities that cause environmental degradation, such as the destruction of forests and water bodies. He assured miners that the NDC would support them if they followed proper guidelines for sustainable mining.
“The NDC is not against mining. In fact, it was the NDC that legalized small-scale mining in this country. What we are against is illegal mining that destroys our environment. We will support you to ensure that your operations are sustainable and beneficial to both you and the nation.”
He called on the miners to support the NDC in the upcoming elections, praising the party’s manifesto as the best solution for the challenges faced by small-scale miners.
“We need to tell our families and fellow miners that the NDC’s manifesto addresses our key issues and provides a clear path towards a better future for small-scale mining in Ghana.”
NDC Clarifies Stance on Small-Scale Mining
Samuel Hadjor, a member of the NDC’s national campaign team, dismissed rumors spread by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the NDC plans to collapse the small-scale mining sector if elected into office.
He clarified the party’s position on regulating mining activities. “The NDC has never said that we will ban small-scale mining when we win the 2024 elections. What we are saying is that we will regulate small-scale mining activities and train miners with technical skills to ensure responsible operations that do not destroy the environment and water bodies.
The NDC is only against mining in water bodies. So, when the NPP says that the NDC will ban small-scale mining, tell them it is not true,” Hadjor clarified.
He further explained that the next NDC government would ensure that every mining site across the country is equipped with mining engineers and environmental experts to guide miners on how to reclaim land and operate in an environmentally friendly manner.
Local Miners Raise Concerns About Foreign Involvement In Community Mining
During the interaction, Daniel Asante Korobea, a local miner, voiced concerns about Chinese nationals dominating mining areas meant for community mining. He urged the NDC to address the issue if elected into office.
“The NDC manifesto is good, and I’m convinced it will help us miners. But I want you to remove the Chinese people mining here. This place is supposed to be for community mining, yet Chinese foreigners have taken over. We, the local people, can’t mine here because they chase us away. We will vote for the NDC, but when you win, please remove all the Chinese people involved in community mining. It is not meant for them,” Korobea said.
The NDC campaign team assured the miners that their concerns would be addressed as part of the party’s commitment to ensuring that the small-scale mining sector benefits local communities and operates within the law.
The Vice Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, has asked trainee nurses to be thankful to the Akufo-Addo government for restoring their allowances despite the delay in its disbursement.
He said the NPP is committed to restoring and maintaining the allowances which were previously cancelled by the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
Addressing students at the Korle-Bu Nursing and Midwifery Training College in the Greater Accra Region, Dr Prempeh reassured trainee nurses that the government is working diligently to prevent delays in the payment of their allowances.
Dr Prempeh acknowledged that occasional delays in payments may occur but emphasised that these delays are far better than the complete removal of the allowances, as experienced under the NDC.
“There may be delays, but allowances delayed are better than allowances cancelled,” Dr. Prempeh noted.
He assured the students that the NPP values their contribution to healthcare and is focused on policies that will improve their welfare and professional opportunities.
Delays and Agitations
Despite restoring the allowances in 2017, the government has not been consistent with its payment, resulting in series of agitations among teacher and nursing trainees across the contract.
In June this year, the Ghana Nurse-Midwife Trainees’ Association (GNMTA) raised concerns over the delay in the disbursement of allowances to trainee nurses and midwives.
Despite the government’s promise to pay these allowances, the GNMTA said the payment schedule had not been honoured which had brought hardship unto its members.
In a statement issued on Tuesday June 25, the Association expressed concern that the 2022 batch, scheduled to receive their arrears on May 23, along with the 2023 and other batches, had not received these payments.
Furthermore, the GNMTA highlighted that the 2017-2020, 2018-2021, 2019-2022, and 2020-2023 batches have yet to receive any portion of their allowances. The association described this situation as unacceptable and called for immediate attention.
The Ministry of Finance (MoF) has once again been identified as the most fiscally reckless public institution in Ghana for the period from 2021 to 2023, retaining the same title it held from 2015 to 2020.
Following the MoF in the rankings are the Ministries of Food and Agriculture, Communication and Digitalisation, Roads and Highways, and Health.
This conclusion is part of a report released by policy think tanks IMANI Africa and Oxfam Ghana, which evaluated financial irregularities among Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) through the third fiscal recklessness index.
During a media briefing after the report’s launch, Dennis Asare, a senior research associate at IMANI Africa, revealed that the state lost over Ghc 4.9 billion in 2023 due to these financial irregularities.
He highlighted that if this significant amount had been allocated to social intervention programs, it could have bolstered initiatives like the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) and the Ghana School Feeding Programme.
Asare stated, “The Ministry of Finance is deemed the most fiscally reckless institution because almost 90% of the irregularities can be traced back to them. This is the interpretation of the index. We recognize that it serves as a central management agency with oversight responsibilities for other institutions.”
He clarified that the fiscal irresponsibility extends beyond the MoF headquarters to other institutions linked to the Ministry.
Among the primary irregularities identified, Asare highlighted tax discrepancies, underscoring the government’s ineffective revenue mobilization efforts.
He also provided recommendations based on the findings, emphasizing the need to establish a fiscal council with enhanced powers to fulfil its functions effectively.
“We need a stronger fiscal council. The previous one was merely a committee. All political parties agree that a fiscal council is necessary, so we should seize this opportunity to establish it properly. It should be legally backed and, more importantly, given the authority to carry out the vital work we expect from it.”
