Alan’s agric revolution will transform Northern Ghana – Boniface Saddique

Alhaji Boniface Abubakar Saddique, a former Minister for Zongo Development and one of the key archite
cts of Alan Kyerematen’s campaign has reassured chiefs in the Upper West Region that the north will become Ghana’s agricultural powerhouse in West Africa under Alan Kyerematen presidency.
Speaking at a gathering of traditional leaders during the Caravan Campaign Tour, on the 21st of October, 2024, Alhaji Saddique articulated how Mr. Kyerematen’s Great Transformational Plan (GTP) will unlock the immense agricultural potential of northern Ghana.

“When Alan Kyerematen takes office, the northern sector will be transformed into the food basket of the entire nation and beyond,” Alhaji Saddique proclaimed, drawing applause from the gathered chiefs. “We are blessed with vast arable land and natural resources, and under Alan’s leadership, these resources will be harnessed for the benefit of all.”

He detailed how the GTP aims to revolutionize the agricultural sector, particularly in the northern regions where there is untapped potential. “Alan’s new agricultural revolution will not only create jobs but also make Ghana self-sufficient in food production. We will no longer have to rely on imports when we have everything we need right here,” he added.

Alhaji Saddique pointed out that the northern regions are brimming with economic possibilities beyond traditional agriculture. “In the north, there is nothing that cannot be turned into an economic asset – whether it’s the trees, the medicinal grasses, or the fertile land. Alan Kyerematen understands this, and his plan will ensure that every inch of this region contributes to national development.”

As a senior advisor to Alan Kyerematen and a prominent member of the Movement for Change, Alhaji Saddique drew from his experience as the Zongo Minister during President Akufo-Addo’s first term to highlight the challenges facing the country, particularly the youth unemployment crisis. “The root cause of our economic woes is poor leadership. We don’t have a shortage of resources – we have a shortage of visionaries to lead us,” he remarked. “Alan is that visionary. He is the nationalist who will create jobs and ensure that every Ghanaian has cash in their pockets.”

He explained that Alan Kyerematen’s GTP is designed to solve the twin problems of unemployment and economic stagnation by placing job creation at its core. “When young people are jobless, they become desperate, and that’s when you see a rise in crime and unrest. Alan understands this and has a plan to create sustainable jobs for the youth. His vision will bring peace because idle hands will no longer be the devil’s workshop.”

Alhaji Boniface Saddique urged the chiefs and the people of the Upper West Region to support Alan Kyerematen, emphasizing that politics should not be about tribal or religious affiliations, but about electing a leader who can deliver results. “We need a leader who will unite us all, irrespective of where we come from. Alan Kyerematen is that leader. He will make sure that every region, and every community, benefits from the national pie. His leadership will ensure that we all enjoy the fruits of our labour.”

Elder Cletus Nyureh, speaking on behalf of the Paramount Chief of Nandom Traditional Area, Prof Edmund Nminnyem Dell Chiir VIII, said they had waited a long time for Alan’s arrival, as they believe in his vision for the country and wished him well in his bid to lead Ghana. The chiefs and elders, on their part, expressed their deep appreciation for Alan Kyerematen’s visit.

As the Caravan Campaign Tour continues to sweep through the Upper West Region, the Movement for Change’s message of economic empowerment and agricultural transformation resonates strongly with both the traditional leaders and the general populace. The chiefs have pledged their support to Alan Kyerematen, recognizing him as a leader capable of delivering on his promises.

NDC’s mining policies progressive; better than NPP – Small Scale Miners

The Concerned Small Scale Miners Association of Ghana has endorsed the policies of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) on the extractive sector, particularly for small-scale miners.

President of the Association, Michael Kwadwo Peprah, says after perusing both campaign manifestos of the NPP and NDC, members are convinced that a John Mahama-led government will secure the environment through responsible mining.

For the past 7 years, majority of Ghanaian river bodies have been heavily polluted by illegal mining activities also known as galamsey. The situation which some have blamed on government appointees under the Akufo-Addo government has sparked a national conversation on the threats of the activities of galamsey.

As the country goes to the polls on December 7, licensed small scale miners believe their work has been hampered by the government while others in powerful places are allowed to mine in forest reserves.

In an engagement with small scale miners in Manso and it’s environs in the Ashanti Region, Peprah told his colleagues the NPP government cannot be trusted to sanitize the sector  when Dr Mahamudu Bawumia wins the elections because it is their cohorts that are destroyin the rivers clandestinely.

He criticized the current government for what he described as a failure to address the challenges faced by small-scale miners.

According to Peprah, the NPP’s approach led by the military to curbing illegal mining has been ineffective, and in some cases, has only worsened the situation.

“In 2016, President Akufo-Addo promised to improve small-scale mining, but instead, we’ve seen legitimate miners lose their jobs while illegal operators, many with political connections, continue to destroy our natural resources with impunity,” Peprah said.

He pointed out that many small-scale miners struggle to obtain licenses due to bureaucratic delays and called for a decentralized licensing system, as proposed by the NDC.

Peprah praised the NDC’s manifesto, stating that it offers practical solutions to the sector’s problems, including decentralizing the licensing process and addressing the influence of illegal foreign miners. He emphasized that the NDC’s approach is the best way forward for Ghana’s mining sector, ensuring long-term benefits for both miners and the environment.

He said Reclamation of land by miners as promised by the NDc is feasible based on what they have read in the manifesto of the NDC, urging the miners to believe in the NDC and vote for John Mahama.

NDC takes Mahama’s policies to mining sites in Ashanti Region

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting responsible small-scale mining in Ghana when its leader, former president John Mahama is elected into office.

The party’s Small-Scale Mining Campaign Committee during a campaign tour in Manso Adubia and its surrounding areas in the Ashanti Region stated that the next NDC government will implement mining policies that will save forest reserves  and restore the heavily polluted rivers.

Addressing miners and community members, Samuel Hadjor, a key member of the committee, dismissed claims made by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the NDC intends to ban both legal small-scale mining operations.

He emphasized that these rumors are false and reassured the miners of the NDC’s dedication to safeguarding the livelihoods of small-scale miners, while ensuring environmental protection.

“We’ve heard rumors that the NDC will ban small-scale mining. That’s not true. What we plan to do is ensure small-scale mining is done responsibly,” Ahadjor stated.
He further explained that the NDC’s manifesto outlines strategies for ensuring best practices in mining to protect water bodies and land resources.

Hadjor highlighted the NDC’s plan to provide technical training and expertise to miners to help them adhere to sustainable and environmentally friendly mining methods.

He stressed the importance of reclamation, stating that the NDC would introduce a reclamation bond that miners must set aside to restore land after mining activities. “Reclamation is crucial. After mining, we must return the land to its original state,” he said.

Michael Kwadwo Peprah, President of the National Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association of Ghana, also voiced his support for the NDC during the tour. He criticized the current government for what he described as a failure to address the challenges faced by small-scale miners.

According to Peprah, the NPP’s militarized approach to curbing illegal mining has been ineffective, and in some cases, has only worsened the situation.

Be professional in handling political disputes – Domelovo cautions Supreme Court

Former Auditor-General, Daniel Domelevo has called on Judges to exhibit professionalism in ruling on matters that are political, stressing that the courts are becoming too predictable with its adjudication of political issues.

Wading into the worried trajectory of judgments being delivered by the Judiciary in recent times, Domelovo urged the judiciary to be guided by findings of the National Security Minister on the predictability of the courts.

He made these comments at an event organized by Crusaders for Change in Koforidua in the Eastern Region.

His comment comes in the wake of confusion in Parliament over which party caucus can occupy the majority seat, following the declaration of some four (4) seats vacant by the Speaker, Alban Bagbin.

The Supreme Court ruled on the matter, staying the execution of the Speaker’s declaration after the MP for Effutu and then Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, took the matter to court.

Most legal luminaries commenting on the matter have said the Supreme Court ought to have stayed away from the parliamentary stalemat.

Dumelovo contends that when the trajectory becomes the norm in the courts, the country could be heading for doom.

“My last admonition goes to the judiciary, especially the Supreme Court. I would like to admonish them that they should heed the advice given to them by the Minister of National Security, Honourable Kan-Dapaah.

“He told them that if their interpretation is tilted so much towards us [NPP] all the time, it will create a problem. It is creating problems. And I heard one quote, I don’t know how true it is.

“I read somewhere that the former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo said the Supreme Court is now very predictable. If she actually said it, then I could not agree more with her because most of you knew what the results were going to be before it came. I don’t think we need that. We need professionalism,” he urged.

Corruption

Domelovo, an anti-corruption activist, also linked some of the biases that may underpin the rulings in the country’s courts to corruption.

Speaking at the event dubbed “The Scarface of Corruption in Ghana: A Nation in a Sinking Ship,” Domelevo expressed deep concern over the increasing number of corruption cases across the country.

He urged the electorate to use their votes as a tool for accountability, ensuring that leaders perceived to be corrupt are not returned to office.

“The generation ahead of us is a very wicked generation. They want to take everything today and what will even come tomorrow. And we must stop it. You have enough knowledge and power to say to our leaders no, enough is enough,” he stated while expressing worry about how corruption among politicians have led to the destruction of forest reserves and river bodies through illegal mining (galamsey).

“…We are in an election year. Let’s say enough is enough for anybody we think is corrupt. Not only at the presidential level but even at the parliamentary level, you know them. Let’s make sure that we stop them in their tracks. Otherwise, you and I have no future.”

Conference

The conference was held in the Eastern Premier Hotel in the Eastern Region with famous speakers such as Dr. Chris Kpodar Solomon, the Executive Director at Solomon Investment Ghana Limited; Physician and political activist Dr. Arthur Kennedy;  Former Trade Minister ,Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, and Mr. Daniel Yaw Domelovo,  a former Auditor-General and Dr Suzanne Nti, the Chairperson of Crusaders Against Corruption (CACG).

These speakers discussed important corruption scandals from the last seven years and present an in-depth examination of how corruption has hampered national growth, showing visual representations of important corruption instances will be used to help the general public grasp the scope of the problem.

The conference aims to involve citizens, anti-corruption activists, and institutions in a discussion about how to combat corruption and promote good governance in Ghana.

By shining awareness on the negative effects of corruption and its link to poverty, the event hopes to promote more accountability and civic action, pushing the people to hold officials accountable for establishing a transparent and corruption-free government.

CLOSAG threatens strike Nov. 4 over delays in completion of salary structure

The Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) have served notice to commence a nationwide strike effective Monday, November 4, 2024,  as a result of the long delay in the completion of a salary structure for the staff of the Civil Service and the Local Government Service.

The proposed new salary structure has already been approved by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) but it is yet to be implemented by the Ministry of Finance, and Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations.

According to the Association, the salary structure has been on hold for over 15 months since a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was reached.

CLOGSAG in a statement explained that, “From the foregoing, it is evident that the 31st October 2024 deadline for finalization of a salary structure for the Civil Service and the Local Government Service would not be met.”

“In the light of the above CLOGSAG would have no option than to declare a nationwide strike from Monday 4th November, 2024,” the statement added.

As such, CLOGSAG said it has waited long enough and has no other option than to proceed on strike if the government fails to implement the new structure by the end of the month.

This development follows an earlier notice CLOGSAG served to embark on an industrial action in July this year.

‘I’m still running as independent candidate’ – Cynthia Morrison dispels rumours

The Member of Parliament for Agona West, Cynthia Morrison, has denied rumours that she is reconsidering her decision to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 general elections.

The clarification comes after photos surfaced showing her with some Majority members at Parliament’s Job 600 office on October 22, 2024.

These images sparked speculation that Morrison might be reversing her decision to contest independently after losing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries to Christopher Arthur.

Morrison had earlier declared her intention to run as an independent candidate following her defeat in the primaries, which stirred controversy. This development led Speaker Alban Bagbin to declare her seat, along with three others, vacant.

However, the Supreme Court issued a stay of execution on the Speaker’s decision after Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson invoked constitutional provisions, stating that MPs running as independent candidates must vacate their seats.

But reacting to the claims of joining forces with the NPP, the former Minister urged the public and her constituents to dismiss the “baseless claims” and reaffirmed her commitment to running independently in the upcoming elections.

Morrison also called on her supporters to remain vigilant against misinformation, emphasizing that her decision remains unchanged and she is determined to continue her campaign as an independent candidate.

“We wish to categorically state that these reports are false and do not reflect the Hon MP’s current position or intentions. Hon. Cynthia Mamle Morrison, the sitting MP for Agona West, remains committed to serving the constituents and has made no such announcement retracting their decision to run independently.

We won’t meet NPP with Bibles while they face NDC with guns – Hannah Bissiw warns

The National Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Hannah Louisa Bissiw-Kotey, has issued a stern warning that the party will no longer tolerate what she describes as sinister acts by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

She expressed that the NDC would not respond passively to provocations, stating that the days of meeting the NPP “with the Bible for the sake of peace” are over.

Dr. Bissiw-Kotey accused the NPP of consistently betraying the cause of peace in Ghana’s political landscape.

She referenced past incidents, including those during the 2024 general elections, where she claims the NPP used violence to their advantage while expecting the NDC to remain peaceful.

“Ghana’s democracy is suffering under the reign of the NPP,” she asserted, emphasizing that the turning point came in 2024 when, according to her, the military unleashed terror on innocent voters during the elections,”she said in an interview on Accra 100.5 FM’s Ghana Yensom morning show.

Dr. Bissiw-Kotey also noted that the NDC, with its revolutionary background, will not shy away from standing its ground in future elections.

She further stated that the party would not entertain any calls for peace from NPP leaders if such calls are not rooted in justice.

“There can be no peace without justice,” Dr. Bissiw-Kotey said, warning that the NDC will not compromise or tolerate any actions that undermine fairness in the upcoming general elections.

In her closing remarks, she stressed that the NDC will remain vigilant and will resist any attempts by the ruling party to manipulate the electoral process or promote peace without addressing the core issue of justice.

Uncertainty in parliament could dampen investor confidence – Prof. Mensah warns

Economist Professor Lord Mensah is worried developments in parliament could heighten investor uncertainty about the direction of the economy.

According to him, there are crucial fiscal policies that must be examined by parliament and passed on time, but could be delayed by the disagreement between the two major parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on who has the majority in the House.

This, he warned could send bad signals to investors and businesses seeking to operate in Ghana.

“Parliament plays a major role when it comes to approvals of expenditure lines and our approvals of some revenue line. So if it turns out that as a result of this power shift things are not beings settled, of course the investor community are going to see it to be more or less a bad signal”, he cautioned.

Prof. Mensah stated that investors do not like political uncertainties that do not give a clear view of the future.

He pointed out for example that time is a very important component when making an investment decision, hence further delays in passing fiscal laws and policies will derail the confidence of investors.

“At the end of the day it will impede their decisions as to whether to settle on Ghana or move elsewhere. Under a democratic dispensation, everything has to do with timelines and we are moving into November. We have to start concluding on our budget lines for next year”, he said.

Citing the November budget a critical instance, Prof. Mensah said delays in presenting the budget will not auger well for the next government.

“So if this derails, at the end of the day, it may affect committee composition here and there. It may affect our budget lines next year and from then on, the uncertainty continues I will say.”

Speaker adjourns sitting indefinitely

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin on Tuesday October 22, 2024 adjourned sitting in the House amid vacant seats controversy.

The decision was made in a House filled with NDC legislators who had occupied the Majority side of the aisle.

The NPP Members of Parliament had walked out earlier due to a controversy with the opposition, who had taken over their seats after claiming to constitute the majority.

During the brief proceedings, the Speaker agreed with Francis-Xavier Sosu that the record should be corrected to reflect that, on Thursday, when the NPP group walked out, they were the Minority.

Leading the NPP MPs out of the chamber earlier, MP for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin said they were retreating to their offices to await directives from the Speaker, Alban Sumana Bagbin, on the way forward.

According to Afenyo-Markin, they chose the path of peace rather than confronting their opponents to avoid chaos, insisting that Ghana is a peaceful country that should be maintained as such.

Fighting corruption individually in Ghana very difficult – Wilson Jnr

Chief Crusader for pressure group, Crusaders Against Corruption, Mr Emmanuel Wilson Jnr, has urged Ghanaians to support institutions that fight corruption in the country to ensure that graft is tackled adequately.

The activist who was speaking at an event in the Eastern Regional capital, Koforidua, recounted the numerous threats he has received ever since his activisim against corruption began gaining grounds in the country.

The programme dubbed “The Scarface of Corruption in Ghana: A Nation in a Sinking Ship” focused on examining the crucial issue of corruption that has hampered Ghana’s growth, particularly over the last seven years under the Akuffo-Addo/Bawumia government.

Speaking on the much talked about national crisis, illegal mining also known as galamsey, Wilson Jnr recalled how he was trailed by some unknown persons threatening to eliminate him, adding that at a point, someone ran into his vehicle ostensibly to harm him.

He said these threats from beneficiaries of corruption thrive because citizens of the country are used to leaving anti-graft activism to individuals only which makes it easier for unscrupulous people to target them.

He said when anti-graft campaigners come together to save the country, the strength in their numbers will make it difficult for perpetrators to

“If you want to fight corruption, corruption will fight you back,” he said while citing the struggles of former Auditor-General, Daniel Yao Domelovo.

“One reason we find it difficult to fight corruption in Ghana is simply because, over the past years, we have been fighting corruption as individuals and as not collective,” he stated. ” and so it is very easy for those engaged in corruption to attack Emmanuel Wilson because I am an individual.”

“But when we come together [we can fight it collectively],” he added and emphasisied the role the Crusaders Against Corruption has dedicated its platform to all Ghanaians who want to join the anti-graft campaign will do so with the support of other fighters.

Corruption has severely impacted several sectors of the country’s economy, resulting in a loss of public resources and increased poverty.

“Corruption is what is killing us as a country…Statistically, we are told that we lose $3 billion goes to waste through corruption annually…Can you imagine what this amount of money can do for us in our communities,” Wilson said  while calling omn Ghanaians to be interested in the matter and come together to prevent graft among all sectors of the economy.

The Koforidua event aims to raise public awareness about these concerns and emphasize the critical need for coordinated action to eliminate corruption at all levels of government.

Speakers
