President John Dramani Mahama has said Ghana’s seventy-year journey of peaceful co-existence without any civil war must not be taken for granted.
According to him, though Ghana experienced some Coup D’etats from the first to the 4th republic, the 70 – year democratic journey has stood the test of time.
Addressing the Ghanaian Community in Russia on the sidelines of the 3rd Russia – Africa Summit on Friday, October 30, 2026, President Mahama recounted the overthrow of Ghana’s first President Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah among other coups.
“We remember Kwame Nkrumah’s spirit.
After that, we had a series of coup d’etats with successes, Operation Feed Yourself. The country did well to a point, and then it unraveled again. And then the Third Republic, the revolutionary period, all the way till now. So I believe that all those experiences are part of our 70 years history” he said.
President Mahama said Ghana’s 70th independence anniversary celebration next year must be a reference point for gratitude.
“Next year, we’ll be celebrating 70 years. And at least I tell Ghanaian that we have something to be grateful about. I mean, not many countries have been lucky to still be in one piece. There are many countries in which civil wars are taking place, and they don’t have peace. There’s no safety. There’s no security” he intimated adding that “luckily for Ghana, our country is safe and secure. People are going about their business by trying to build our economy. And the economy is responding appropriately”.
