President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to Ghana’s constitutional two-term limit, stressing that his decision not to contest the 2028 elections puts him in a stronger position to enforce fiscal discipline and avoid the election-year spending overruns that have historically triggered economic instability.
Speaking during bilateral talks with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam as part of a three-day state visit, Mahama condemned the practice of incumbent governments bending fiscal rules to win voter support.
“I will not be a candidate in the next elections and therefore I can hold the line when it comes to fiscal discipline,” he said.
The President pointed to his administration’s recent gains since returning to office in 2024, citing falling inflation and interest rates alongside a significant appreciation of the cedi.
Mahama’s assurance comes amid claims from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that he intends to seek a third term after his current tenure.
His remarks, however, reaffirm his commitment to step aside after completing his mandate.
The bilateral discussions in Singapore centered on economic cooperation and investment opportunities, with both leaders pledging closer ties between Accra and Singapore.
