Economic rebound, better governance show Mahama is bold and authentic — Horace Ankrah

The Board Chairman of VALCO, Ambassador Horace Nii Ayi Ankrah, has disputed assertions that the economic turnaround being witnessed under the Mahama administration is artificial.

The former Ghana Ambassador to China outlined that the stable currency and improving living conditions in the country were achieved through fiscal discipline and pragmatic policies.

Speaking with Piesie Okrah on Asem Kesie on Power FM Tuesday, July 28, 2026, Mr Ankrah praised President John Mahama’s leadership and expressed confidence in the direction of the country under the current administration.

Reacting to a claim by the Minority in Parliament that the government is not spending therebybmaking the economic indicators look good, the diplomat stated that the NDC administration was spending at the right places that would yield better results.

He mentioned that the Finance Minister,  Dr Cassiel Ato Forson had blocked most of revenue leakages, prevented profilgate spending unlike the Akufo-Addo administration and ensured prudent spending to get Ghana’s economy back on track.

Ambassador Ankrah’s assertions come on the back of the Mid-year Budget presentation by Dr Forson last week where he revealed Ghana’s economy had become the 8th biggest in Africa.

“President Mahama’s stellar performance in government within this short period of assuming office demonstrates that he is focused, bold and authentic,” he stated.

Mr. Ankrah also defended the government’s flagship 24-Hour Economy policy, arguing that many Ghanaians have failed to fully understand its objectives.

“Many people have misunderstood the concept of the 24-Hour Economy policy and what it seeks to achieve,” he said.

According to him, the initiative is not simply about extending business operating hours by creating a secure environment that supports economic activity around the clock.

“President Mahama is not merely building a 24-hour market; he is creating a market supported by round-the-clock security to ensure safety and continuous economic activity,” Mr. Ankrah explained.

The VALCO Board Chairman further claimed that a significant number of Ghanaians remain satisfied with their decision to elect President Mahama.

“I believe that about 65 per cent of Ghanaians are convinced they did not make a mistake by voting for President Mahama,” he noted.

“The Mahama government is not spending carelessly,” he stressed.

Expressing optimism about Ghana’s future, Mr. Ankrah said the country’s transformation would become evident by the end of President Mahama’s current mandate.

“By the end of 2028, Ghana will become the nation we all aspire to see and the country President Mahama envisions for its people,” he added.

His remarks come at a time when discussions continue over the government’s economic policies, particularly the implementation of the 24-Hour Economy initiative, which the administration believes will drive job creation, productivity and sustained economic growth.
