Ghana has launched what officials are calling the “final phase” of bringing its citizens home from South Africa, citing continued hostility toward migrants there. Special flights carrying 1,000 more nationals are scheduled to land on Sunday and Monday.
This latest wave adds to the more than 900 Ghanaians already repatriated, and Accra says it intends to pursue compensation from Pretoria for the property and assets its citizens lost. The government has also asked the International Criminal Court to investigate the anti-foreigner attacks, arguing they may rise to the level of crimes against humanity.
Ghana isn’t acting alone on the diplomatic front together with Nigeria, it has urged the African Union to formally take up the issue at its upcoming summit.
The exodus extends well beyond Ghana’s citizens: over 160,000 foreign nationals have left South Africa since May amid the unrest.
