President John Dramani Mahama has given security agencies two weeks to submit a comprehensive report on measures to harmonise their operations and ensure smooth operations at Ghana’s ports.
This comes after major cocaine seizures linked to Ghana, including the recent seizure of nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine by French authorities from a container shipped from Ghana.
The high-level meeting with heads of security, port and other relevant agencies at Jubilee House on Thursday, September 17, was to review gaps in Ghana’s border-control systems and strengthen measures to prevent the trafficking of narcotic drugs and other illicit substances.
A joint task force will also be established to regulate operations at the ports.
The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) is to be restored to the joint container inspection process after it was removed in 2018 through a Cabinet memo.
Government will also equip the relevant agencies to effectively perform their statutory roles.
