Bawumia’s betrayal forced Akufo-Addo’s ‘belated painful reshuffle’ — GFL

The Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) is deducing that, Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mamudu Bawumia’s public lecture at the University of Professional Studies, UPSA, during which he openly betrayed the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, forced him to reluctantly undertake a “belated for painful reshuffle.”

Secretary General of the Federation, Mr. Abraham Koomson, noted that Dr. Bawumia’s display of pomposity, betrayal of the ruling government, especially the Economic Management Team, which he described as a toothless bulldog (merely advisory body) and detaching himself from any ills of the government while claiming all the positives are a stab in the back of the President, who for the past 16 years has mentored him.

Speaking to a section of the media in Tema on the President’s major reshuffle since assuming power in 2017, Mr. Koomson, who is a seasoned unionist, described what has been described as ‘injury time’ reshuffle, useless because the economy has been messed up beyond revival under the same policies of the same government.

“It’s obvious that the government has realized the excruciating harm caused to businesses and workers as observed by the Vice President and his promise to remove these nuisance taxes.
“The government is expected by workers to immediately demonstrate commitment to stop the E Levy; 15 percent ECG VAT must not only be suspended but abolished; pollution and emission taxes; and taxes and levies on local beverage manufactured products must all go immediately,” Mr. Koomson noted.

Mr. Koomson attributed three major internal NPP politicking and circumstances that forced President Akufo-Addo to undertake the painful action.
“The last straw that broke the old man’s back was the public betrayal from Vice President Bawumia, who, by intent and purpose, said, “Nana Akufo Addo is not a listening President,” as most of his sound economic advice as the head of the Economic Management Team was not heeded to by the President.
He critiqued that the Vice President’s presentation on February 7 was an attack on the NPP, President Akufo Addo, and the legacy of former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
“Vice President Bawumia looked into the eyes of former President Kufuor and told him that his accomplishment as a driver’s mate has never been achieved before under the Fourth Republic,” stressing that “no president under the current democratic governance has been able to achieve it; this is a total embarrassment of former President Kufuor.”
Mr. Koomson also noted that the second issue that contributed to the reshuffle was that the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, called on ministers, CEOs, and MMDCEs who were fatigued to consider resigning rather than undermining the party’s progress.
“Using the party’s annual Thanksgiving service held at the party headquarters recently to openly rebuke the President, cabinet, and ministers was unfortunate; it portrayed a party in disarray,” he stated.
According to Mr. Kodua, appointing new faces is essential to propelling the NPP towards achieving its objectives, stressing that it is time for some changes in the government “so we get some new faces to continue.”
“We believe that if we get new appointments, we will be able to retain power in the next election, and we called on President Akufo-Addo to immediately conduct a reshuffle to bring new faces into his government,” he emphasized.
Mr. Koomson described the NPP General Secretary’s comments as a public rebuke:
“To rebuke your father in public shows that the old man has lost respect at home that is within the party, and anyone can just publicly call him to order.” he emphasized.

I got the nickname “rap docta” from a concert – Okyeame Kwame

Ghanaian musician and songwriter Kwame Nsiah-Apau, known by his stage name Okyeame Kwame, has revealed that he got his popular name “Rap Docta” from a concert.

Speaking to Afia Owusu on XZone on TV XYZ, Okyeame disclosed that around 1999 or 2000, he performed at a concert alongside Reggie Rockstone.

However, after Reggie’s performance, although the audience loved his rap, they didn’t fully understand it. So, Okyeame decided to explain the rap, and during this explanation, a Jamaican man remarked that he explained it like a doctor.

Inspired by this comment, Okyeame adopted the name “Rap Docta,” which has since become a household name in the Ghanaian community.
He recounted, “Around 1999 or 2000, I was booked for a show in downtown New York after Reggie Rockstone’s performance. They all loved it but didn’t understand. Then I said I will explain. While explaining, a Jamaican man said the way you explain is like a doctor teaching, and then we picked the name Rap Docta.”

Artists don’t make hip life music because streaming platforms don’t have a category for it — Okyeame Kwame

Renowned Ghanaian Hiplife artist and rapper Okyeame Kwame has revealed that young artists shy away from Hiplife music because streaming platforms do not have such a genre.

According to him, their days in the industry were not about streaming platforms, but rather all they had to do to promote or make money was to sell their CDs. “Music and marketing these days are about money. Gone are the days when we used to sell our CDs to promote our music and make money,” he said.

Speaking in an interview on XZONE on TV XYZ, the rap doctor revealed that most streaming platforms have genres like hip hop, Afrobeat, neo soul, soul, alternative music, African music, and experimental. However, it makes it difficult to sell a genre which is not listed in their category of music on the streaming platforms.

“Now music is on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon. The online platforms have no genre called Hiplife. So, where are you going to sell your music when you call it Hiplife? There’s no Hiplife on streaming platforms; all they have is hip hop, Afrobeat, neo soul, soul, alternative music, African music, and experimental. So, if your song is not one of these categories, it’s more like creating a round product where the shelves are all in square shape,” he added.

Okyeame Kwame told host Afia Owusu that pioneers of Hiplife should have created a similar platform for Ghanaian music which would have made young artists interested in delving into such a genre. “As pioneers, we should have created a similar platform because these streaming platforms were created by man and we can also do the same. If we had done the same with all Ghanaian genres, the younger generation would have been interested in our genres, but the white man will promote his own with stuff he created,” he emphasized.

Major “Valentine’s Day” ministerial reshuffle expected Wednesday

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is expected to announce his most radical Ministerial reshuffle since he took office on 7 January 2017. The announcement of the changes to the line-up of ministers, our Jubilee House sources say, is scheduled for Wednesday (14 February, Valentine’s Day).

This Tuesday afternoon witnessed several movements to the fourth floor of Jubilee House by ministers expected to be affected and other MPs expected to benefit from the ministerial changes.
The president, as required by the 1992 constitution, will submit the list of ministerial appointments to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, and the appointments will be announced on the floor of Parliament.

President Akufo-Addo will be travelling out of the country to Europe tomorrow, Valentine’s Day, on an official engagement in the Federal Republic of Germany. The list should be delivered to the Speaker tomorrow.

Asaase News sources close to the Presidency say that up to 12 current, substantive ministers of state may be affected, including ten cabinet ministers and two regional ministers.

Asaase News sources on the third and fourth floors of Jubilee House confirm that some very big names will be among those dropped from their positions as ministers of state. While some may be dropped completely, others are expected to be reshuffled.

It is also anticipated that about seven deputy ministers will lose out. The biggest beneficiaries are expected to be backbenchers from the Majority side of the House, several of whom will fill the vacant slots.
Reports say President Akufo-Addo has met all the ministers and deputy ministers who may be shifting places, leaving, or joining his government in the upcoming reshuffle.

Sources on the fourth floor of Jubilee House also say there is talk of a possible reshuffle of the leaders of the Majority in Parliament. This change, one source says, will follow a planned meeting between the leadership of the ruling New Patriotic Party and the presidency, to take place soon.

Tema General Hospital records 11 ‘Kwashiokor’ deaths in 2023

The Tema General Hospital documented a total of 11 deaths among children suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM), popularly known as Kwashiokor, in 2023.

The hospital is the only referral health facility in Tema and its environs with an in-patient care facility for the management of SAM among children under the age of five.

Head of the Nutrition Unit at the Hospital, Joyce Asare Kissi, disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency in an interview on Thursday, February 8, 2024.

“The deaths were not only in-patient care for Severe Acute malnourished children but also those who had been discharged but died within a few days”, she explained

The 11 were referrals from other facilities that needed advance care, comprising three each from Tema Newtown and Kpone-Katamanso, one each from Ashaiman Township, Ashaiman-Jericho, Dawhenya, and Tema Communities 25 and 22.
Ms. Kissi noted with concern that Kwashiokor is still a health problem among children aged zero to five, which some unfortunately attributed to spiritual and cultural beliefs.

“That delayed seeking medical care for the children until the situation worsened and other medical conditions set it”, she said.

The nutritionist, therefore, advised parents to have time for their children and feed them the needed nutritional foods to ensure good health and prevent kwashiorkor.

Falling victim to the disease puts them at a higher risk of getting some childhood illnesses, which may result in death.

She advised parents whose children were being managed for Kwashiorkor at home with therapeutic milk, or the Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food, to stick to the instructions of their nutritionists to prevent a relapse, complications, and death.

I am exceedingly grateful to H.E. John Mahama, our revered chiefs, our compassionate donors, distinguished guests, our hardworking construction workers, all volunteers and my beloved constituents for making yesterday’s commissioning of the North Tongu MP and Partners Safe Alternative Housing Initiative a resounding success.

May this beautiful project help my traumatized displaced constituents find smiles again.

I hope this model of 70% contribution from benevolent Ghanaians and 30% from the MP’s Office helps us to construct more of such modern, decent disability friendly buildings while creating jobs for hundreds of young people.

God bless you all.

I do not have a contract agreement with Shatta Wale — Sammy Flex

Shatta Wale’s manager, Sammy Flex, has revealed an intriguing aspect of his working relationship with the artist. Contrary to conventional contracts, Sammy disclosed that there is no written agreement between him and Shatta Wale; instead, their agreement is verbal.

In an engaging conversation with host Agyemang Prempeh on Power Entertainment on TV XYZ and Power979FM, Sammy explained that they have effectively communicated their roles, expectations, and boundaries to each other. Despite the absence of a written contract, Sammy emphasized that their agreement is legally binding.

“Agreement is agreement,” Sammy asserted confidently. “We have a legal agreement in place. We’re in constant communication, and one thing is certain: legal agreements don’t always have to be signed. Shatta and I haven’t signed any contracts.”

Peacefm and hitz fm should be banned — Shatta Wale

Ghanaian dancehall artiste Shatta Wale has issued a warning, declaring that Peace FM and Hitz FM should face a ban from operating.

The “pahpahpahpah” crooner expressed frustration, insisting that these media outlets must conduct thorough research before going on air.

In an interview with Agyemang Prempeh on Power Entertainment on TV XYZ and Power 979FM, Shatta Wale recounted an incident where false information about him circulated without verification. He emphasized that when rumors spread regarding his performance fee at the GMA UK Awards, the radio presenters failed to verify with his manager before making claims on air.

“Peace and Hitz FM should be banned because they don’t do their research well,” Shatta Wale exclaimed. “I don’t think someone who claims to be a top radio presenter should just sit on radio and say Shatta is lying without verification. Sammy Flex is there, who is your contact person, and you can verify with him.”

Shatta Wale also revealed that many radio presenters harbor mixed feelings about him, leading them to tarnish his image on air. “It looks like people have mixed feelings about Shatta Wale, so these people are on radio spreading negativity,” he lamented. “It’s very unhealthy for the public because these are people who are trying to tarnish people’s businesses.”
