Fuel price hikes: what have Ghanaians done wrong? – K.K Anyimah asks Bawumia

A member of the opposition NDC communication team has slammed Vice President and flag bearer of the NPP, Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia for the consistent increment of the prices of petroleum products in the country.

Emmanuel K.K Anyimah who was speaking on Inside Politics on TV XYZ wondered why fuel prices are soaring under the Akufo-Addo government when he pledged in opposition to implement policies that will reduce the prices of refined fuel drasticall when elected to power.

Anyimah, an oil and gas enthusiast, blamed Dr Bawumia, the Head of the Government’s Economic Management team, for the escalating prices of fuel, adding that fuel prices could have been stabilised had the government adopted prudent measures to stabilse the currency and tackle other factors that make fuel prices expensive.

“I don’t know what the Vice President, Dr Bawumia is doing. He is always seen in public laughing hysterically as though nothing is at stake…I don’t know what Ghanaians have done wrong to deserve this,” he lamented.

His concerns come at a time fuel prices have gone up in the secod pricing window of April, 2024.

XYZ News on checks on Tuesday indicated that some Oil Marketing Companies had increased prices of petroleum products at the pumps in line with the two-week review period on Tuesday, April 16, 2024. Market Leader, GOIL is selling a litre of petrol at ₵14.99p and diesel is going for ₵14.80p.

The prices of other private OMCs ranged between ₵ 13.50 and ₵14:60 for petrol and diesel, according to the “price floor” policy of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA).

However, Anyimah says there is hardship in the country and the government that campaigned on the back of expensive fuel in 2016 ought to tackle the heightening prices of petroleum products.
