President John Dramani Mahama has renewed calls for permanent African representation on the United Nations Security Council, describing Africa’s continued exclusion as unacceptable in the 21st century.
He noted that Africa’s population has grown to about 1.5 billion people, representing more than 18% of humanity and making the continent the largest regional voting bloc in the UN General Assembly. Yet Africa remains without a single permanent seat on the Security Council.
President Mahama argues that this situation is inconsistent with the principle of sovereign equality among nations and reflects a global governance structure shaped by post-war geopolitical realities.
“Security Council reform is not a favour to Africa,” he said, stressing that meaningful reform is necessary to strengthen the legitimacy and credibility of the United Nations.
He called for Africa to be granted permanent representation with all the rights and responsibilities that come with membership of the Council.
