Clean voters register before it’s too late – Mahama warns EC

Flag bearer of the NDC, former president John Mahama has sent a strong caution to the Electoral Commission (EC) to open up to stakeholders and address anomalies identified in the voters register before it’s too late

According to Mr. Mahama, this election is crucial and the NDC, like the millions of Ghanaians, yearning for change will not tolerate any action that can disenfranchise them or compromise the results of the polls.

John Mahama’s concern follows discrepancies identified during the voter register exhibition which includes illegal transfers without the consent of voters, missing names and wrong allocation of polling stations.

The former President, who was addressing a mini durbar of chiefs and people at Adjen Kotoku in the Amasaman Constituency during his two-day tour of the Greater Accra region, warned of potential chaos should Ghanaians who have right to vote cannot find their names in the register or have to move from one polling station to the other to find his or her name.

“I am sorry to say there is a lot wrong with that register. The EC has to sit up so that we don’t have any confusion on election Day. The EC is an important institution in us having peaceful elections in this country. You better wake up, you are not doing your job properly,” he fumed

The NDC leader said he is particularly disturbed about those who have had multiple registration yet the EC failed to fish them out.

“A lot of people cannot find their names. Others have their names transferred without their knowledge. People have registered for proxy without using the biometric cards. People who have done multiple registration, their names are still on the register ” he lamented.

The NDC on Tuesday, 27th August, 2024 wrote to the EC requesting an emergency inter Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting to address the concerns after noticing same during the voter exhibition exercise which began on August 21 and ended on August 27,2024.

Your devious press encounter backfired – Mahama jabs Bawumia

Flag Bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Mahama has described the monumental failure of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer at Sunday’s press encounter as a testament of lies he and his government has been associated with.

According to Mr Mahama the Vice President who has always been vocal in criticizing the NDC, touting himself as the brain behind some NPP initiatives, suddenly became a stammerer during his press encounter on Sunday, August 25,2024.

Addressing Chiefs and People of Kasseh in the Ada constituency of the Greater Accra Region as part of phase 1 of his tour on Tuesday, August 27,2024 the former President said the intention of the press encounter was to give the NPP prominence in the media but that disgracefully backfired.

“If you do something with a devious intention it backfires on you. We announced that we were going to launch our manifesto on 24th August immediately, our opponents announced that they were going to holda media encounter on the 25th of August, the very next day. The agenda was to turn the attention of Ghanaians from the NDC Manifesto” but they “ had a slap on their faces” that is their evil plan backfired” he stated.

Mr Mahama further added that Dr. Bawumia’s inability to answer simple questions at the presser shows the extent to which they were badly exposed

“You know when to tell when someone is lying, there are people who are smooth talkers who can speak like machine guns but when they start stamering then you know they are lying ” he said

“Someone who can speak like AK-47 suddenly at a media encounter he becomes a stamerer” he mocked

Mr Mahama reiterated the need for leaders to pride themselves with honesty and truthfulness

NDC sets 6 conditions for peace pact ahead of 2024 Elections

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has laid out six conditions that must be met before the party agrees to a peace pact ahead of the 2024 elections.

The National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, detailed these conditions at a meeting with the National Peace Council’s Committee for the Code of Conduct on Vigilantism and Election-Related Violence in Accra on Tuesday (August 20, 2024).

He stated that the party would not commit to any peace engagement unless the conditions were met.

The conditions include the government’s full implementation of the recommendations of the Ayawaso West Wuogon election commission of inquiry, the prosecution of those responsible for the killings of eight people during the 2020 elections, and the prosecution of individuals involved in the illegal printing of approximately one million extra ballot papers during the 2020 elections.

Other conditions include President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo publicly declaring on a state platform that he will respect the outcome of the 2024 elections, full disclosure on the missing equipment from the Electoral Commission, and a requirement for the President, the Inspector-General of Police, the Chief Justice, the National Security Coordinator, and the Attorney General to all sign the pact.

Mr. Nketia stressed that the NDC was not ready to “let bygones be bygones” and stated, “We will not be part of any engagement unless you bring together all the parties.”

Correct wrongs

The Director of Communications of the NDC, Kakra Essamuah, urged the Peace Council to encourage the Electoral Commission (EC) to perform its duties professionally and correct the wrongs of the previous election.

He stated that such admonishments should be made publicly to send the right signals that could lead to a change in the conduct of the EC and ensure a peaceful election. “If you want to correct someone who did wrong publicly, you have to do it publicly,” he said.

The Deputy Minority Leader of Parliament, Armah Kofi Buah, asserted that peace can only follow justice and called on the Council to press institutions responsible for delivering justice to do so, ensuring that peace prevails.

“Peace comes after justice, but as it stands now, there has not been justice, and without justice, the Peace Council cannot be effective,” he said.

Benefit of the doubt

The Chairman of the Committee, Maulvi Mohammed Bin Salih, urged the NDC leadership to give the committee the chance and “breathing space” to operate as it employs all strategies to ensure that all stakeholders involved in the elections commit to a peaceful outcome.

“Give us the benefit of the doubt, and the breaks you have applied, remove them a little bit,” he said.

He noted that members of the committee, drawn from various institutions including the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Armed Forces, civil society, and political parties, were committed to ensuring a peaceful election but would need the cooperation of all actors to succeed.

“For us to be able to do that, we will need some amount of goodwill and trust from the members of the committee. With that goodwill and trust, we will be very much encouraged to do the best that we can,” he said.

The 13-member committee, inaugurated last month, is meeting various stakeholders ahead of the election to ensure they commit to a peaceful process. The committee was established to oversee the implementation of the code of conduct that was signed in 2020 in preparation for this year’s election.

Women’s Bank to benefit all, not only NDC members – Hanna Bisiw

The National Women Organiser for the opposition NDC, Dr Hanna Louisa Bisiw has assured Ghanaians that the party is committed to supporting businesses to thrive when they win power in the December polls.

The former Minister who was speaking on Dwaboase programme on TV XYZ said the NDC’s promise to establish a Women’s Development Bank to give soft loans to women owning small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the country is one of the ways the next John Mahama administration will use to improve the lives of the vulnerable in the country when they assume power.

According to Dr Bisiw, the bank will not serve the needs of only NDC members but every woman who qualifies to get support from the financial institution.

“The bank is not going to serve NDC women. Every Ghanaian woman who is into business and needs support will be able to access the loan once they qualify, ” she assured.

The bank, she said, will play a critical role in reviving the ailing economy to give respite to Ghanaians.

The women leader went on to outline some policies in the NDC Youth manifesto that was launched last week and urged Ghanaian women, especially the youth to trust the NDC flag bearer, former president John Mahama and vote him to power in the upcoming polls.

“John Mahama, our flag bearer is committed and can be trusted to turn the fortunes of the country around, create sustainable jobs women and the youth, unlike the NPP government that has failed the entire country,” she stated.

Dr Bisiw further indicated that Ghanaians should not trust Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the new leader of the NPP to fulfill the promises he made to Ghanaians on Sunday during their manifesto launch.

She argued that if he could do all he promised, Ghana would not be in debt and the economy messier, pushing so many people, including women into hardship.

To her, it is John Mahama who is trustworthy and can turn the country around.
