Four years enough for Mahama to reset economy – Shamima Muslim

Shamima Muslim, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team, has confidently stated that a four-year term would be enough for former President John Dramani Mahama to rejuvenate Ghana’s economy.

This statement comes amidst questions about Mr Mahama’s potential impact, considering he would only have a single four-year term as president if he were to win the upcoming December elections.

In a conversation with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV’s Point of View, Shamima Muslim argued against returning the economy to those who had previously mismanaged it.

“We need to understand the true state of the Ghanaian economy. It cannot be in the hands of the same people who have brought us [into it]. So the alternative viable option is his excellency John Dramani Mahama because he has also been [there] and when people ask what can he do differently in four years, four years is enough to reset the economy, bring it back to an even hill.

Be vigilant – We aren’t sleeping till results are declared – Mahama to NDC

John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on party members to lace their boots to protect ballots come December 7, 2024.

Speaking at the NDC’s campaign launch in Tamale on Saturday, July 27, 2024, Mr Mahama said the battle ahead to kick the failed NPP government out will be tough and it will take commitment and the collective effort of all to prevent anyone or group from manipulating he process.

“Everybody needs to prepare, we’re not going to sleep for 48 hours until all the ballots have been counted. None of us is going to sleep for 48 hours until all the ballots have been counted.”

The NDC 2024 flagbearer also cautioned the rank and file of the party against complacency.
“Once we launch this campaign we are not going to sit. We are going to go from market to market. We are going to go from trotro station to trotro station. We are going to go from house to house. We are going to go from shop to shop.

He added – ”Don’t wait till the campaign teams come before you come and follow our convoy. Even when we are not there you must be working.”
He noted that the party leadership is closely monitoring every process and will block any attempt to steal the people’s mandate.

“We have had our issue with the Electoral Commission, but we’re prepared to give them the benefits of the doubt,” he assured.

“And I wish to assure all Ghanaians who intend to vote for the NDC, I can promise you that we will protect every single vote.

“4 years of good leadership better than 8 years of a dishonest leader” – John Mahama

The Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has urged Ghanaians to be mindful of deception and vote out this government for abysmal performance.

Speaking at the launch of the NDC’s national campaign in Tamale on Saturday, July 27, Mr Mahama said the argued that the youth cannot afford to waste another four years trying out the over-hyped Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, whose credibility has sank very low as a result of his own lies over the past eight years.

Mahama emphasised that Dr. Bawumia does not deserve the opportunity to lead the country, given his past performance, stating that the youth are clamouring for an experienced hand who will create opportunities for them.

“Four years is enough to reset Ghana. Four years of good leadership is better than 8 years of a dishonest leader. It is not about how long you serve but about how well you serve” – he emphasized.

The former President added “The youth of this country don’t have four years to waste. The youth of this country are in a hurry to create the opportunities that will make them live a dignified life. They are not going to try somebody and four years take him off. The youth want an experienced hand.”

He urged the electorate to consider the track records of the candidates and make an informed decision that will benefit the nation.

The NDC flagbearer stressed that the youth are clamouring for an experienced hand to create real opportunities for them, implying that his own leadership would better serve the country’s future.
“On December 7, Ghana must change course, we cannot solve the crisis in which we are with the same people who caused the problem.

Several years ago, somebody [President Akufo-Addo] came and said try me, the result is what we’re seeing today. Today, another person [Dr Bawumia] has come and he’s also saying try me.

“And he’s saying the same things the one who has put us in this ditch said eight years ago. And what they are saying is that if they don’t deliver after four years, change me.

Election 2024: Losers must accept outcome – Jean Mensa assures transparency

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa has reiterated her commitment towards an open and transparent electoral process in the December polls.

According to her, political parties that do not win the upcoming polls must take it in good faith.

“Surely there will be a winner and surely, there will be losers. And so we all call on our contestants to accept the outcome of the elections because we undertake and we commit to ensuring that the elections are free, they are fair, they are credible, they are transparent,” she told journalists on Wednesday, July 17, 2024.

Two viral videos on social media appear to show women affiliated with a political party accusing the EC of registering voters and undertaking an illegal transfer of votes.

The Commission has denied these claims, stating that the videos are misleading and false.

During the presentation of the Democracy Cup to the EC by the leadership of Parliament, Jean Mensa assured transparent elections and urged political leaders to accept the outcome of the polls.

“So like the referee of the match this afternoon we commit to ensuring transparency in all aspects of our work. Our activities are open, as I mentioned, right from the registration through to the declaration of elections, everything is done in the full glare of the public, and nothing is hidden. And we will commit to this to maintaining and ensuring that level of transparency across all aspects of our work,” she explained.

Jean Mensa also entreated the parties to at the end do the polls accept the outcomes of the election.

Meanwhile, the EC has announced that the 2024 Voters Exhibition Exercise will start on August 20 and end on August 27, 2024.

No need for Mahama-Bawumia debate – Bawah Mogtari

The spokesperson for the John Mahama 2024 Campaign Team, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has firmly rejected calls for a pre-election debate between the NDC flagbearer and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the NPP.

Despite growing appeals from political analysts and various stakeholders, Bawah Mogtari dismissed the idea of a debate between the two prominent contenders.

During an interview on Channel One TV on Monday, July 8, Bawah Mogtari lauded Mahama’s exceptional and extensive knowledge on general issues.

She, however, hesitated to accept an invitation for a debate, citing the current state of the government’s performance as rendering such a debate unnecessary.

She expressed supreme confidence in John Mahama’s ability to outshine any presidential aspirant in a debate scenario.

The former Deputy Transport Minister emphasised that the key issues for the 2024 general election are well-known to Ghanaians, suggesting that there is little appetite among voters for a formal debate.

Madam Bawah Mogtari underscored the campaign team’s strategic focus on other forms of engagement and communication with the electorate.

“I personally have no appetite for a debate…When I look at what we have, when I look at the current trajectory, when I look at the failings of this particular administration, I ask myself ‘why do we need to put up with a debate’? But of course, this is a decision that the upper people usually will make.

“It’s not my decision to make, as the debates and conversations go along, maybe eventually some conversations will happen around it, who knows?

“We do know all about the debates between John Mahama and then candidate Akufo-Addo and we know who won those debates. So, I believe that the fact that Mr Mahama is a man whose energy and knowledge is unparallel is not in doubt. And I’m sure on any day, whomever, I know he’s going to win the debate. But I don’t think that immediately I will want to see that,” she maintained.

Corruption fight: No actor in this NPP corruption enterprise will be spared – Mahama

Former President John Mahama has reiterated his commitment to tackling corruption impartially when he returns to power.

The flag bearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) believes corruption has been normalized under the current Akufo-Addo government and stifled development in the country.

Addressing journalists on Sunday night in Accra, the former President emphasized his unwavering commitment to retrieving state resources that had been plundered by persons wielding power in the current regime.

He noted that he will no longer adopt a lenient stance when it comes to dealing with corrupt activities.

“I can assure you, if you believe that I was imbued the father-for-all syndrome, it’s been exorcised. And it’s been exorcised because it is a demand by the people of Ghana.”

Mahama said his goal is to launch a renewed fight against corruption and keep his appointees in check.

“Ghanaians can be assured that drastic steps will be taken to punish the corrupt officials and their accomplices in this present government.”

“No actor in this NPP corruption enterprise will be spared,” he assured and stated his government will also “take action to repossess what has been unlawfully stolen from the Ghanaian people.”

“As we all know, government procurement is a significant source of corruption. No economy can sustain inclusive and equitable social and economic well-being with the penchant for public service holders to be self-serving and corrupt, as is currently the case, ” he added.

Mahama also pledged that under his regime, the use of public finances will always be compliant with national laws, transparent, justified by contemporary value-for-money tests, and solely in the interest of the broader citizens.

“If we want to eliminate corruption, we must increase accountability in government procurement processes,” he stated.

Accountability, he noted, “gives power back to the people.”

Mahama went on to assure the people of Ghana that the NDC government under his leadership will fully be committed to
accountability.

Ghana is like hell today because of Akufo-Addo’s incompetence – NDC’s Atta Kusi

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Constituency Secretary for Sunyani East has tagged President Nana Akufo-Addo as the most insensitive head of state Ghana has ever had, citing his mismanagement of the country’s economy.

Mr Atta Kusi who was speaking on Power FM‘s Battleground programme on Wednesday night argued that Ghana was better of under the leadership of John Mahama before he was voted out by Ghanaians for Akufo-Addo.

Touching on the skyrocketing prices of goods and services coupled with numerous taxes that are crippling businesses in the country, the NDC man explained that the country was heading in a wrong direction despite the many promises of Akufo-Addo and his ministers to fix the country’s challenges.

He noted that since assuming office in January 2017, Akufo-Addo has showcased his cluelessness in good governance, leaving the citizens with bad governance riddled with unrestrained corruption among top officials who have nothing to offer.

He told host oheneba Boamah Bennie that Ghana’s woes are a result of the insensitivity of Akufo-Addo and his top appointees who he alleged had put themselves and families first to the detriment of the suffering tax payers who put them in office to serve with dignity.

“The NPP today is full of corrupt and evil people… If you go to every sector of the economy, the level of thievery and pilfering are scary and we the citizens are the ones suffering for their the arrogant and profligate lifestyle of these non performing appointees,” Kusi stated.

“Just imagine the hardship the people are going through all because someone who is paid and cushioned to steer the affairs of the  country is underperfoming.”

“Today, about 194,000 people have completed junior high school but did not have access to secondary education because their parents were not financially strong to foot the initial bills under the free SHS policy yet millions of dollars have been pumped into the national cathedral which remains a hole till now,” he recounted while urging Ghanaians to reject the New Patriotic Party (NPP) led by Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as its flag bearer.

Mr Kusi went on to say that, “If I were a member of the NPP, I would always cover my head in shame all because of Akufo-Addo and Bawumia’s incompetence.”

“Corruption has been normalised under this government to a point that 12 million dollars meant for the Pwalugu irrigation project cannot be accounted for yet they are telling us to allow them govern us again. They think Ghanaians are fools,” he posited.

“People are losing their capital due to the depreciation of the cedi against major trading currencies How much is the price of cement today?  A bag of cement was about 18 cedis in 2016 but it is 125 cedis in Sunyani currently,” he said while reminding Ghanaians of the many promises of improving the lives of Ghanaians by Akufo-Addo.

“They promised stable fuel prices but Ghanaians cannot buy fuel today. We have to reject these thieves who have captured everything that belongs to the state and return the NDC and former president John Mahama to government to put Ghana on the right path,” Kusi urged.

NDC Zongo Caucus commends Mahama for Cole Younger’s role in campaign team

The Zongo Caucus of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reiterated the party’s commitment to developing Muslim dominated communities across the country.

The Caucus said despite previous projects in the said communities, the NDC’s commitment in that direction was reinforced when Alhaji Mohammed Mamah, also known as Alhaji Cole Younger, was appointed to the party’s national campaign team to lead policy formulation processes for Zongos.

Alhaji Cole Younger was appointed the Zongo Caucus Coordinator to lead the NDC’s campaign ahead of the December 2024 general elections.

In a statement, the NDC communicators in Zongos commended the flag bearer of the NDC, H. E John Mahama, for reposing confidence and “recognizing their significance and granting them pivotal roles in the national development agenda.”

To them, this was a great move especially when the ruling NPP has sidelined the NASARA Coordinator in their national campaign team.

Below is their statement;

Press Statement for Immediate Release
19/6/2024

H.E JOHN DRAMANI MAHAMA PRIORITIZES ZONGO WITH STRATEGIC CAMPAIGN ROLE.

The National Zongo Caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), on behalf of the Zongo communities, sincerely expresses profound gratitude to H.E. John Dramani Mahama and the NDC for appointing the National Zongo Caucus Coordinator, Alhaji Mohammed Mamah “Cole Younger,” to the national campaign team for the 2024 elections.

This appointment underscores our long-held belief that John Mahama and the NDC have consistently demonstrated unwavering confidence in the Zongos, recognizing their significance and granting them pivotal roles in the national development agenda.

In stark contrast, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flag bearer has marginalized the Zongos in his national campaign team, with the Nasara Coordinator notably absent from the campaign structure. The NDC and John Mahama, however, have provided the Zongos with a prominent role. This gesture by the NDC and John Mahama is a clear manifestation of their commitment to the Zongos in the agenda to “build the Ghana we want together.”

It is worth recalling that John Mahama and the NDC are the only presidential candidate and political party to have introduced the Zongo Manifesto in the 2020 elections, a move that the Zongos deeply appreciate and hope to see repeated in the 2024 general elections.

We take this opportunity to congratulate Alhaji Cole Younger and all other appointees on their new roles, assuring them of the full support of the Zongo Caucus in their endeavors.

Once again, thank you H.E. John Dramani Mahama, thank you NDC.

We’re taking back all seats in Eastern Corridor – Fmr GCB Bank MD declares

A former Managing Director of GCB Bank, Ernest Agbesi, has said that as the country enters another crucial electioneering period, people should be guided by the fact that no one wants to die just to elect someone.

Speaking to the media after he led a team on behalf of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to donate 15 motorbikes (the second batch in a series) to all the 9 orphan constituencies of the party in the Eastern Corridor of Ghana, Agbesi said that while Ghana is a peaceful country, should anyone foment trouble, they will be squarely matched.

He also expressed great confidence that the NDC will win back all the seats within the northern parts of Ghana that they lost during the 2020 general elections, adding that the current realities will go against the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“Ghana is a peaceful country so I don’t think we need people to come and be telling us or preaching peace to us. Nobody wants to die because of elections so I believe, personally, that there’s not going to be any problem but as a party, like our leaders are saying, we are prepared for peace but if they bring violence too, I think our people are ready for it.

“As for the Eastern corridor, we are taking it back because it is our traditional seats. Some places, they used money but Ghanaians have realised that if they give you money today and you spend, before the next four years, you are going to be suffering. So, we are wide awake now. I don’t think anybody will go and collect money to sell his vote out. No. the reality is on the ground and people are seeing it. So, we are taking back the Eastern Corridor from Kpandai to Zagzugu Tatale, to Gushegu Karaga, Bunkurugu Yunyo, we are taking all because they are our seats,” he stated.

Speaking on behalf of all the other constituencies, during the presentation of the motorbikes at Yendi, Abukari Dawumi, the Member of Parliament for Wulensi, expressed gratitude to Ernest Agbesi and the team for the generous donation.

He explained that with these motorbikes, it will be much easier to mobilise people ahead of the December polls and to ensure that people come out to vote for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“I’d like to thank Chief Agbesi and the team for intervening in this matter to support our constituencies to be able to carry out their work responsibly. Even though my constituency is not an orphan constituency, but I think that an intervention such as this one will help us to mobilise our members to come out and vote for the NDC to actually carry the day on December 7th. Our constituency happens to be one of the difficult constituencies where one election, one political party wins and another election, another political party wins but this time around, we intend to make history by making sure that this time around, the NDC becomes the first party to win the seat two terms consecutively.

“And I think that the provision of motorbikes to support in our campaign will facilitate our chances of winning in the 2024 general elections for both the president and the parliamentary candidate. So, we can’t thank Chief Agbesi and the team enough for this wonderful intervention,” he said.

Ali Adolf, NDC Northern Regional Chairman, also indicated that the party is hungry for power and will do all that is legally possible to win it.

“With the registration over here, we gave it every attention. It’s nothing less than 90%. We gave it the attention that it required. We are very hungry for power. So, we took the pain to ensure that at least we sensitise the people and those who have attained the age of 18 got themselves registered.

“If you don’t have voters, you cannot talk about getting power. And so, we did a lot of sensitisation to let people come out to register. We are now assured that victory will come for sure,” he said.

The NDC is looking for a comeback to political power in the December 2024 general elections, with its leader, John Dramani Mahama, hopeful of becoming president of Ghana again for his last four-year term.

Mahama vows to investigate and reclaim stolen state lands under Akufo-Addo when elected

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to investigate and reclaim state lands allegedly misappropriated under the current NPP government.

The former president accused the President Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia government of “disposing off state lands and properties at an unprecedented rate”.

In a post on X on Thursday, June 20, Mr Mahama emphasised that such actions cannot continue unchecked, and he is determined to ensure that these lands are reclaimed for the state when elected to lead the country.

“The Akufo-Addo and Bawumia government is disposing off state lands and properties at an unprecedented rate. When elected, my administration will prioritise the investigation and re-possession of these lands,” he posted.

Mr Mahama’s concerns come at a time most families and land owners in Accra and Kumasi have raised issues about their properties being encroached upon by persons related to high officials in government with armed security officials.

Background

Similarly, there have been concerns against the sale of a 60 percent stake in four hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to powerful persons closer to government.

The hotels, including the popular  La palm Beach Hotel in Accra, Royal Ridge Hotel, and Busua Beach Hotel, are being sold to Rock City Hotel, which is owned by the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

The development triggered a street protest by SSNIT contributors and some labour groups led by the Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

Dubbed ‘Hands off our hotels’, the protest on Tuesday, June 18, aimed at compelling the president to prevent the sale of these hotels to the detriment of Ghanaian workers who contribute monthly to SSNIT.

Despite the agitations by some labour unions and civil society organisations, spokepersons of the ruling NPP have jumped to the defence of the minister whom anti-corruption crusaders have accused of dabbling in conflict of interest.

The rapid sale of state properties, Mahama states, undermine public trust and deprives future generations of valuable national assets.

Meanwhile Bryan Acheampong, the Minister for Food and Agriculture who has come under fire for his role in the controversy, has affirmed his hotel’s strong financial standing and ability to purchase the 60 percent shares of SSNIT in the four hotels.

He said in an interview with Citi FM’s Umaru Sanda Amadu  that Rock City Hotel “grows on the back of the investors”, stressing that he is well positioned to take over the state properties in question.

“It grows on the back of the stakeholders and whatever we can leverage to grow…Look at the document that was presented to SSNIT. They have more than the capacity to enter into the transaction and more than the capacity to do so. Much more than the capacity.”

“I mean this is the company that currently has 1000 rooms here in Kwahu. 1000 rooms. And in two or three years, they will add another 2000 rooms. This is the biggest hotel in Africa,” he elaborated,” he added.

Alhaji Mogtari added that the “token of 25 motorbikes and a pick-up truck is to aid those who will be doing the work, because people need to move around and they would need these vehicles and that’s why we have donated.”

He further admonished the party leadership to effectively utilise the items for their intended purpose of vigorous campaign to win power in the December polls.

Former president John Dramani Mahama commended Alhaji Mogtari for the intervention.

“Thank you very much my brother-in-law for this handsome donation. Upper West is one of the critical regions for the NDC because it was midwifed by our tradition and we take the region very seriously and that’s why we aim to win all 11 seats in the Upper West region,” John Mahama said.

On the part of the National Chairman, Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia charged the regional leadership of the party to make sure that the positive impact of the donation is felt on the campaign.

The Upper west Regional Chairman of NDC, Nasir Sani, pledged the items will be put to good use.

The donation of a pick-up vehicle and several motorbikes towards the party’s campaign efforts has been described by many party supporters as a move that will come in handy for the upcoming elections.
