It isn’t the military’s responsibility to ensure free and fair elections – Asiedu Nketia warns Chief of Army Staff

The National Chairman of the NDC, Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia has criticised the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Bismarck Kwasi Onwona, for his recent comment about whose responsibility it was to ensure a calm environment during elections.

Speaking at a programme in Kumasi last month, Major General Onwona stated that the military has a greater responsibility in ensuring a free, fair and transparent election and entreated military commanders at all levels to ensure that truce plays under their charge.

“We are in an election year and much will be expected of each and every one of us. We have a greater responsibility to ensure a free and fair and transparent election by performing our duties professionally at all times,” said the Chief of Army Staff.

But in an interview on Inside Politics on TV XYZ, Mr Asiedu Nketia condemned the comment and said whoever said that needs to go back to military training school to learn the duties of the military.

“He should go back to training school again…He should go and read the constitution. The work of the military is to fight Ghana’s external enemies. Is he trying to say that Ghanaian voters are enemies of the state?”

According to the astute politician, the miltary has no responsibility manning election centres except officials of the Ghana Police Service, stressing that they are the institution mandated by the laws of the country to maintain law and order in the country including elections.

“Ensuring free and fair elections is the responsibility of the police. When the police are overwhelmed during elections, that is when they call for the military to support, even with that the military will be working under the orders of the police.

“We will not allow the military to come to election centres to take over security and end up shooting innocent voters and other Ghanaians as they did in 2020…Anyone who has a contrary view should come and challenge me,” he added.

Asiedu Nketia was emphatic that the NDC will not sit aloof for the miltary to take over polling stations on election day and intimidate electorates and cause chaos.

My experience will make me a better President – Mahama

The flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama has said his experience in and out of office as President would enhance his leadership capabilities if re-elected.

Speaking at his Building Ghana Tour in Kambatiak, Mr Mahama expressed pride in his achievements during his presidency while recognising the valuable perspective gained during his time out of office.

“I have been president before, and I had the experience. There is no school where you go and pay school fees, enroll, and say, I want to learn how to be president.

“You have to learn on the job. Luckily for me, I got the experience of working with a very good, honest, and one of the best presidents we have had in Ghana, Professor John Evans Atta Mills.

“As president, we did some things well; we built a lot of infrastructure. We provided health facilities in many districts and regions. We provided educational facilities,” he stated.

The former president disclosed that during his and Professor Mills’ eight-year tenure, their government successfully eradicated over 3,000 schools under trees and established more than 400 CHPS compounds.

Reflecting on his presidency, Mr Mahama acknowledged that, given the chance, he would have approached certain issues differently.

“Not everybody gets that opportunity that you become president; you go out of office and you get the opportunity to come back again, and so I know that in the four years coming, I will be a much better president than even when I was president.

“One, because of the experience that I have had as president before, and two, because I had the opportunity to reflect on my period of time as president,” he said.

Electing Bawumia means the Agyapadie Document will be implemented fully – Attah Issah

The NDC parliamentary candidate for Sagnarigu in the Northern Region, Attah Issah, has urged Ghanaians not to take Vice President and flag bearer of the NPP, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, seriously, stressing that his election will be a third term of the Akufo-Addo regime.

He said Bawumia, an protege of Akufo-Addo, will be controlled by a cabal in Akufo-Addo’s family who have been milking the state dry since NPP assumed office.

Speaking on the Gumbe Show on TV XYZ, Issah criticised the Akufo-Addo government for  what he terms as a bad leadership that has the tendency to capture the seat of the government at all cost and added that Bawumia’s election will mean the state capture will continue.

His comment was in relation to circulating document authored by the family of  the Ofori Atta’s who are Akufo-Addo’s family members to strategise clandestinely to release key resources including the nation’s mineral proceeds to key persons within the Kyebi fraternity whose membership now hold the fort of the presidency and key ministries in government.

A portion of this restricted document titled Agyapadie to wit valuable property of inheritance reads, “The NPP’s agenda for political dominance will hinge on our financial might.”

With Nana in total control of the whole entity of Ghana; when we have finally captured the command and control sectors of our country for our private use, we will then be in the proper stead to wield the political and economic power to control the destiny of this country under Oforipanin.”

Attah Issah believes the strategies in the document are happening as predicted, adding that when Ghanaians vote for Bawumia, it will mean that the authors of the Agyapadie document, who are his financiers, will force him to implement fully the strategies in the book.

NPP came to power to steal and destroy; lets kick them out – Edem Agbana to Ghanaians

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Ketu North, in the Volta Region, Eric Edem Agbana, has taken a swipe at the government of President Nana Akufo-Addo, calling his appointees “thieves” who do not have Ghana at heart.

Speaking to Oheneba Boamah Bennie on the Gumbe Show on TV XYZ, the former Deputy Youth Organiser for the party lashed out at those in Akufo-Addo’s government for the messed up economy and swell in corruptaion related activities among these officials.

Agbana pointed to the many corrupt cases that have happened in the NPP government and argued that graft had slowed the growth of the country especially at a time some key people in government and closer to the president and his family members had strategically captured key positions that enables them to steal from the public purse.

His comment comes on the back of the sacking of  the Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Dr. John Ofori-Tenkorang.

Tenkorang was asked in the letter announcing his firing to hand over to Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo,  a son of a senior advisor to the president, Yaw Osafo Maafo. Kofi Bosompem was the Deputy Director-General in charge of Investment & Development at the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).

In Edem Agbana’s estimation, the sacking of the man was orchestrated way before he was appointed.

Agbana believes the sacking is to fulfil a clandestine move by the family of the president to have access to huge funds the Trust has made which are meant for developmental purposes.

The Agyapadie Document

The plan, he noted, was authored by the family of  the Ofori Atta’s who are Akufo-Addo’s family members to strategise clandestinely to release key resources including the nation’s mineral proceeds and the Electricity Distribution backbones to key persons within the Kyebi fraternity whose membership now hold the fort of the presidency and key ministries in government.

Agbana indicated that almost every strategic plan in the document is playing out under Akufo-Addo, the reason he believes the government are full of thieves whose motive is to capture every sector of the economy to enrich the descendants of the Akufo-Addo’s family and his Kyebi kinsmen.

He asked Ghanaians to un derstand that the people in government, especially those in the inner circles of Akufo-Addo are “wicked and do not mean well for Ghanaians.”

He said the rot would have to be overturned by the NDC flag bearer, John Mahama, whom he said will reset this country and fix the mess created by Akufo-Addo and his cohorts when voted to power in the impending December polls.

Bryan Acheampong’s hotels will burn first during war – Malik Basintale warns

A Deputy National Communication Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Malik Basintale has lashed out on the Minister for Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, over his recent warmongering comment.

Acheampong, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Abetifi constituency in the Eastern Region, over the weekend reiterated that the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not relinquish power to the NDC regardless of the results of the 2024 elections results.

Bryan Acheampong is known for his involvement in the violent incident that occurred during the  Ayawaso West Wuogon by-elections, where he allegedly ordered NPP’s Invisible Forces to attack NDC members during a by-election in the constituency.

However, in a Facebook post, the NDC Spokesperson chided the Minister for the statement and stressed that, the MP had done investments in the country’s economy and would not want to mess with his toil in the name of politics.

“He won’t risk losing his hotel Rock City and his new toy, La Palm, to war,” he said.

Basintale believes the minister’s comment, although uncalled for, cannot materialize.

Disgraceful! – “Retract and Apologize’ NDC female MPs descend on Wontumi for attacking Prof. Naana Jane

Female Members of Parliament in the Minority Caucus have condemned the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, (NPP), Benard Antwi Boasiako, alias Wontumi for what they describe as an insult to womanhood, disgraceful comments he recently made against Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang.

Chairman Wontumi, in a recent radio interview, alleged that former President and NDC’s 2024 Flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama had an affair with Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, and that what has informed her choice as his Running Mate.
He also alleged that Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang is not from Cape Coast, as it’s widely known.

To the female NDC MPs, it is disgraceful for a woman of such repute and achievements to her credit, to be denigrated by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP.

In a strongly worded statement in reaction, Deputy Minority Whip and Vice Chair of the Female MPs Caucus, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe said the attack by Benard Antwi Boasiako, alias Wontumi, is a clear indication of a lack of respect for women, which should not be countenanced in Ghana’s growing democracy.

The Vice Chair of the Female NDC MPs Caucus, served notice they will advise themselves if ‘Chairman Wontumi’ fails to apologize to Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang and all women in Ghana.

Read Their Statement Below

PRESS STATEMENT
CONDEMNATION OF VILE COMMENTS AGAINST PROFESSOR JANE NAANA OPOKU AGYEMANG

As female legislators of the minority caucus of parliament, we are compelled to express our utmost condemnation of the recent derogatory remarks made by the Ashanti regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, against Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, the Vice-Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

It is deeply distressing and unacceptable that in this day and age, a woman of Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang’s stature and accomplishments would be subjected to such baseless and demeaning attacks on her character and appearance. Such comments not only reflect a profound lack of respect for women in leadership positions but also perpetuate harmful stereotypes and discrimination.
The recent allegations made by Chairman Wontumi regarding Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang’s marital status and regional origins are equally reprehensible and without merit. These unfounded accusations only serve to further undermine her credibility and integrity as a politician and academic.
The same Ashanti regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako made a similar derogatory and wicked statement against the good professor on July 10, 2020.
This is unacceptable, and as women in leadership, we condemn these disparaging comments from Bernard Antwi-Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi).

The recent derogatory remarks made by the regional chairman are utterly unacceptable and disgraceful. Such behavior undermines the integrity of political discourse and reflects poorly on both chairman Wontumi and the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Instead of engaging in petty insults, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) should rather prioritize addressing the collapsing economy and delivering on their promises to the Ghanaian people. It is time for chairman Wontumi, the New Patriotic Party, and the government to redirect their efforts towards constructive actions that benefit all Ghanaians rather than resorting to divisive rhetoric. Ghanaians deserve leaders who uphold dignity and focus on meaningful progress for the nation.
As representatives of the people and advocates for gender equality, it is imperative that we stand united in denouncing such reprehensible behavior and demand strict accountability from those who perpetrate it. We call upon Chairman Wontumi and all other individuals who engage in such deplorable conduct to publicly apologize to Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang and refrain from making any further derogatory remarks.

Notice is hereby given that Chairman Wontumi should apologize to Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang and apologize to all women in Ghana, or we will advise ourselves. We are committed to promoting a culture of respect, dignity, and equality for all individuals, regardless of their gender, background, or ethnic affiliation.
Sincerely,
Hon. Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe
(Dep. Minority Whip, Vice Chair of the Female MPs Caucus & MP, Ada)

Dumsor is back; ECG unable to settle $1.5 billion debt owed IPPs — Minority

The Minority in Parliament insists the incessant power outages the country is grappling with is as a result of the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) indebtedness to Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

According to the Minority Spokesperson on Energy, Mr. John Jinapor, the power distribution company is grappling with a huge debt of $1.5 billion which is yet to be settled as bills for purchased electricity in full.

Mr. Jinapor criticised ECG for what he terms as wasteful spending on items like cables, malfunctioning meters, and what he considers unnecessary contracts.

“ECG owes $1.5 billion, when they take the money from Ghanaians, they fail to pay the IPPs and use the funds to do whatever they want with it and they fail to pay the full price of the power they purchase and PURC has brought a report that when ECG comes in possession of a substantial amount of money they refuse to pay the debt they owe, they spend the money recklessly, and this is an official report from the PURC,” he said in an interview with Joy News.

“Some of the things they buy, they don’t even need it, and now they want to be buying fuel, which is not even their core duty, all these are a reason the finances aren’t adding up,” he said.

ECG Debunks ‘Dumsor’ claim

Despite incessant power outages, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) says there is no need for a load-shedding timetable.

‘Dumsor’ is a Ghanaian term used to describe persistent, and unpredictable electricity power outages.

A section of Ghanaians who are affected by the frequent, unannounced power cuts have demanded the ECG publishes a load -shedding timetable to aid them plan their daily lives.

But ECG says although the country has been witnessing power interruptions in some areas, it cannot be termed ‘Dumsor’, hence there is no need for a load-shedding timetable.

The External Communications Manager of ECG, Laila Abubakar, in an interview debunked claim that the current power outages across the country call for the implementation of a load-shedding timetable.

“The thing is, we just want people to be aware that when your power goes off, it is not always a matter of load shedding…There are several issues and there are some of them that fall at the doorsteps of ECG. We are doing as much as possible to solve the ones that we can,” Abubakar said in a radio interview on Accra-based Citi FM on Tuesday, March 12, 2024.

“There aren’t any issues with shedding load. The load shed, I think is what people understand by ‘Dumsor’. But usually, when someone asks me if, there is Dumsor, I ask them what do you understand and what do you think ‘Dumsor’ means. Unfortunately, there wouldn’t be a timetable”, she stated.

Ghanaians won’t forgive us if NDC fails to hold Akufo-Addo’s appointees to account – Apaak

The Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak has raised concerns about plans by the Ghana Education (GES) to procure past questions for final year Senior High students.

The Deputy Ranking Member for Parliament’s Education Committee said apart from the procurement process which is questionable, the decision is not the best.

The MP believes the procurement, which will cost the state a whopping GHS 68 million, is not being done with transparency.

“Why use sole-sourcing for the procurement?” Apaak quizzed on Inside Politics on TV XYZ.

“The Government could have gone to WAEC for the photocopying of the past questions if it meant well. WAEC could have done that for the government at a cheaper price but this government decided to award someone a contract at a questionable cost,” Apaak bemoaned.

To him, the deal is shrouded in secrecy and has the tendency to waste state funds.

“Why did you have to wait? Why the sole sourcing? There was no justification for them to sole source? This is the nature of this corrupt, failed, insensitive Akufo-Addo -Bawumia government.”

He alleged the procurement is a deal to enrich a few members of the NPP, stressing that such deals must be put to the accountability test when the NDC wins power.

“We must expand Nsawam prison when we win power…When we come to power and we don’t hold these people accountable, Ghanaians will not forgive us,” the MP added.

3 researches went into Naana Jane’s renomination – Omane Boamah

The Director of Elections and IT for the opposition NDC, Dr Edward Omane Boamah has eulogized the party’s running mate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, saying her experience to the John Mahama ticket will win the party power in December.

The former president, Mr Mahama has announced Professor Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate for election 2024 on Thursday, March 7.

In a statement, the NDC leader, John Mahama, expressed confidence in his running mate.

“I am proud to have Professor Naana
Jane Opoku-Agyemang as my running mate. Her integrity, dedication, and vision for a better Ghana make her the ideal candidate to join me in leading our party to victory in the upcoming elections, ” Mahama said while nominating Prof. Opoku-Agyemang.

Reacting to the fortunes the running mate brings to the party, Dr Boamah, a former Minister for Communication states that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang brings a wealth of experience to the ticket, adding that her gender and personality creates hope for women aspiring to be leaders.

“John Mahama took his time in selecting his Running Mate. He did three different researches and in all, Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang stood tall,” Dr. Omane Boamah said on Inside Politics on TV XYZ.

Touching on the running mate’s personality, he argued that her impact saw the NDC winning more seats in her home region.

“Prior to 2020 elections, NDC had just 4 seats in the Central Region. The John and Jane ticket catapulted the number from 4 to 13 seats,” he added.

The NDC, he noted, will leave no stone unturned in its quest to win the 2024 elections and “rescue Ghanaians from the bad governance currently being witnessed.”

Dr Omane Boamah writes …… “Running mate in the NDC not a position to lobby for”

The Director of Elections of National Democratic Congress, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has given a fair idea as to how a running mate is settled in the party.

According to him, the history has been that people who lobby for the position are not given the opportunity.

He says that has always been the case and will never change.
“This history should teach us to ignore people who lobby to be running mates. They are never selected as running mates in the NDC.” – he emphasized.
“Relatedly, let me clear my throat: The position of running mate is not secured through lobbying in the NDC.”

Find below a post shared via social media, titled, Choosing Running Mate for 2024
—————————————————

Happy 67th independence anniversary!
Let’s work together to defeat the nonperforming and corrupt Akufo-Addo Bawumia government to reset our dear country on the path of progress.
Relatedly, let me clear my throat: The position of Running mate is not secured through lobbying in the NDC.
Not when President Rawlings chose Kow Nkenssen Arkaah in 1992.
Not when President Rawlings chose Professor Atta Mills in 1996.
Not when Vice President Atta Mills chose Martin Amidu in 2000.
Not when Vice President Atta Mills chose Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni in 2004.
Not when Vice President Atta Mills chose John Dramani Mahama in 2008.
Not when President Mahama chose Governor Kwesi Bekoe Amissah Arthur in 2012 and in 2016; and
Not when President Mahama chose Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyeman in 2020.
2024 cannot be an exception!
This history should teach us to ignore people who lobby to be Running mates. They are never selected as Running mates in the NDC.
God bless our dear NDC party, God bless our homeland Ghana
