Failed Akufo-Addo can’t force Chiefs to stand and greet him – Malik Basintale

A Deputy National Communication Officer of the opposition NDC, Malik Basintale has taken a swipe at President Nana Akufo-Addo over what he describes as acting rude toward the overlord of Gonja, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I.

Akufo-Addo, on Sunday April 28, is reported to have attended an event in Damongo and asked that the overlord of Gonja to rise from his skin before exchanging pleasantries with him.

According to reports, Akufo-Addo was invited to the one year Anniversary of the Yagbonwura in Damongo which also had coincided with the annual congress of the Gonjaland Youth Association and the Guan Congress.

When the President arrived and was taken round to exchange pleasantries with the chiefs, his body guard signaled the Yagbonwura to rise and shake hands with Akufo-Addo.

The King refused despite a call from the Savanna Regional Chairman of the NPP, Mr Kalamonia.

The incident angered the youth and the subchiefs of Gonja who murmured among themselves.

However, reacting to the issue on Dwaboase programme on Power FM, Malik Basintale who is a Gonja man did not take the issue lightly.

The NDC spokesman condemned Akufo-Addo’s act and labeled him as arrogant.

He argued that every chief deserved a respect from the President despite their location in the country.

To him, “a president like Akufo-Addo who has failed on his mandate has no authority to demand that chiefs rise up to shake hands with him.”

Basintale suggested that to get Akufo-Addo or the NPP to apologise for the gross disrespect toward the Gonjaland, the Yagbonwura must ban all political activities of the governing party in the area.

The King and Overlord of Gonja, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale has assured former President John Dramani Mahama of the full support of his Kingdom as he travels the length and breadth of Ghana in his bid to win the December 7, 2024 elections.

The renowned Chief subsequently cautioned the Electoral Commission and the security agencies to remain neutral to guarantee the credibility of the elections.

Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale also prayed the National Peace Council will be proactive in its deliberations.

In a speech read on his behalf when the NDC 2024 flagbearer called on him at his Palace, as part of his #BuildingGhanaTour of the Savannah Region, the King and Overlord of Gonja said there is no doubt about Mr Mahama’s experience both as President and Vice President, stressing that his track record puts him far ahead of his contender.

He noted that the Gonjaland ancestry are with Mahama, their son, and will go at any length to support his comeback.

He also prayed that the former president will not turn his back at his people if he is sworn-in as President, come January 7, 2025.

“The entire Gonja Kingdom is behind you as a son. Therefore, do not let us down when given the nod. Leave behind a generational legacy that will make us proud. Our ancestors are with you; the Great Ndewura Jakpa’s warrior’s spirit is with you as you go round thee length and breadth of the country to seek the people’s mandate again” he intimated.

Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale also endorsed John Mahama’s proposed 24-hour economy policy which he said will surely boost growth and job creation.

He however called on the NDC flagbearer to intensify education to make the policy proposal a household name to ensure general acceptability.

“We have heard about your plans to introduce a 24-hour economy policy which, if successfully implemented, will contribute to addressing under development, poverty and unemployment.

“We, however, need further explanation from you and your team. If Ghana succeeds, it succeeds for everyone and not just the people of a particular party. This is what we want for our country” the King and Overlord of the Gonja explained.
