King Charles diagnosed with cancer, Buckingham Palace says

King Charles III, 75, has been diagnosed with cancer and will be avoiding public events after being advised by his doctors to minimize in-person contacts, Buckingham Palace announced Monday.

The announcement marks a striking departure from the past, when monarch’s ailments were often hidden from the public, according to royal experts.

During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted,” the palace said in an emailed statement. “Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.”

The statement also did not specify what stage the cancer was found.

Separately, Buckingham Palace said Charles did not have prostate cancer.

The news comes a week after both Kate and King Charles were discharged from a private London clinic after medical procedures. The king underwent a “corrective procedure” for an enlarged prostate, while Kate, 42, had unspecified abdominal surgery on Jan. 17.

“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties,” the statement added.

According to the statement, the king wanted to share his diagnosis in part to avoid speculation on his condition but also “in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”

Before becoming king, Charles served as patron to a number of cancer-related charities, and “in this capacity, His Majesty has often spoken publicly in support of cancer patients, their loved ones and the wonderful health professionals who help care for them,” according to Buckingham Palace.

No further details are being shared about his treatment or prognosis, a palace spokesperson said, but the king returned to London on Monday to begin out-patient care.

Sarah Gristwood, royal biographer and historian, said it was “striking” that the diagnosis was announced at all given the royal family’s history of trying to “keep any sign of ordinary human fallibility behind closed doors.”

Your decision to close polls at 3:00pm defies common sense – Haruna Iddrisu tells EC

Former Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu has served yet the strongest caution to the Electoral Commission against any agenda intended manipulate the electoral process come December 7, 2024.

According to the Tamale South Legislator, early signals being sent to the public by the Commission, defies common sense and any attempt the status quo or undermine the integrity of the election will be resisted

.
Citing proposals to close polls at 3pm and abandon the use of indelible ink as some of the ‘funny’ indicators, Haruna Iddrisu who was addressing a Town Hall meeting at Gushegu, today during NDC 2024 candidate, John Mahama’s tour of the Northern region, questioned why EC, failed to test the system during the just ended NPP primaries even after dropping that unpopular hint, yet want to believe it can experiment that in a crucial Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

“Why did you use it (Indelible Ink) for NPP primaries and all of a sudden its not relevant for general election. Go and think again but we would want results aggregated Polling station by polling station, Constituency by Constituency” he said.
“Jean Mensah is also proposing to political parties to accept change of Election date from December 7 to November 7. The EC is also proposing that polls close at 3:00pm instead of the 5:00pm and finally that the 2024 elections will not witness the use of indelible Ink. How possible”? – he quizzed.

He stressed – “We (the NDC) think they must engage further with stakeholders and we do not think that Parliament may be able to build a consensus on that matter. Because it requires a constitutional amendment to article 112(4) and article 113. We think this matter should be deferred for the future and allow 2024 election to be held on 7th December”.

He continued – “it defies common sense. The right to vote established article 42 is not a divisible right. You cannot tell somebody that when its 3:00pm go home. That is above Jean Mensah and the electoral Commission. It is a common-sense matter”

Haruna Iddrisu who spent most part of his address to explain the NDC’s position on use of indelible ink said the relevance of every democracy is the harmony between the elections body and the political parties.

“There is no Electoral Commission anywhere in the world and in any democracy- it is only relevant so long as political parties are relevant. So she (Jean Mensah) should stay off all this trouble and conduct a free fair and credible elections” he warned.

Akuapem South primary must be conducted soon –NPP polling station executives

The polling station executives of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Akuapem South Constituency in the Eastern Region have urged the leadership of the party to hold the parliamentary primary as soon as possible.

The party members who signed a press release on Friday, indicated that the delay of the election “has instilled significant fear, panic, apprehension, and anxiety within the Akuapem South Constituency.”

The group said the delay has also led to an “environment of uncertainty and concern among our members and constituents.”

This comes after the leadership of the party postponed the primaries following the the exit of the current MP, Osei Bonsu Amoah, from the contest few days to the original date of the primary.

It is believed the NPP postponed the polls to ensure that the party holds a credible primary and get the right person to lead the party in the constituency.

However, the group of polling station executives suggest the delay continues to “escalate the operational costs for the aspirant and the broader operations within our constituency.”

Below is their statement;

3. Urgent Need for Early Preparations: In light of the delay, it has become imperative to avoid any unnecessary delays in preparing for the 2024 General Election. Early preparations are crucial to fostering healing and reconciliation, paving the way for a united and prepared party.

4. NDC’s Parliamentary Candidate Election: Notably, the NDC has already elected their parliamentary candidate, highlighting the urgency and importance for the NPP to expedite our electoral processes.

My govt will revamp Black Stars with home-grown players – Mahama

The new Black Stars will be built on home-grown players, according to National Democratic Congress’ 2024 flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.

He made this statement during the Northern Region leg of his “Building The Ghana We Want Tour” as he campaigns to be elected as President of Ghana, aiming to replace outgoing Ghanaian President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The Black Stars have fared very poorly in recent years, with the latest disappointment being a first-round exit from the 2023 AFCON in Cote D’Ivoire.

Ghana failed to win a game in three outings in the aforementioned competition, leading to a crash out of the AFCON at the group stage for the second edition in a row.

Addressing a gathering, the NDC presidential candidate said the Black Stars under his government would be built on home-grown talents who have excelled in the revamped Ghanaian football structure.

“We will build the new Black Stars based on homegrown players. Domestic players who have trained together for a long time and work as a team, and then we will bring in the foreign ones to blend with them.”

“The core of the Black Stars must be made up of domestic players who have played together for a long time… We are going to overhaul Ghana football in collaboration with the Ghana Football Association.”

NDC Unveils Another Campaign Arm: Voice Out, Vote Out

Another campaign wing Voice Out, Vote Out of the ndc launched dubbed ‘Voice Out, Vote Out’ VOVO for short, the initiative is intended to empower the youth particularly students to boldly speak out on the bad governance resulting in the economic mess, hardship facing Ghanaians, abuse of power and assure them of the hope the alternative, the NDC, whose track record is verifiable, have post 2025, of John Dramani Mahama wins

Speakers including Dan Abodakpui – a member of the party’s Council of Elders, NDC Director of Legal Affairs – Edudzi Tamakloe, Elikem KOTOKO, a deputy National Organizer of the NDC, among other described the crisis facing Ghana today as a result of greed, corruption and mismanagement visited on the nation by a few family and friends in government

Describing the current situation as a ‘generational’ curse, Lawyer Edudzi TAMAKLOE cautioned that through the signs are written on the wall and opinion polls have consistently indicated John Mahaama will win the December 7, 2024 elections, Ghanaians must not be complacent

He said biting out the Nana Akufo Addo led government will not a walk over and that an all hands on deck approach to maximize cites, protect the ballot and secure a resounding victory

Edudzi TAMAKLOE described attempts by the NPP to rebrand Vice President Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, now NPP’s 2024 candidate, will fail because electorates are awake and won’t be deceived again

“ Tou know why since November 4, Dr Bawumia and his campaign team have gone underground? His consultants are struggling how to repackage him after the lies he told and his lost credibility’. Are they going to push a change agenda or continuity? Each will be difficult for Bawumia and we are waiting for his Wednesday event and we shall face him squarely to expose the rot he has been part of” – he noted

Ambassador Dan Abodakpui who is confident about NDC’s victory reminded the party of the strong advise late former President and Founder, Jerry Rawlings gave the party in 2016 at the Cape Coast Sport Stadium that .. “ the NPP is dangerous and will come in various forms once they win an election and removing them will be an ardent task” to paraphrase

He commended the organizers and cautioned their operations should be in tandem with the party structures and not to create unnecessary divisions

Present at the launch was NDC 2020 flagbearer, Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang

Do not shy away from reshuffling your team; laying off loyalists but misfits – Overlord of Dagbon advices Mahama

The Overlord of Dagbon Ndanaa Yaa Naa Abukari II has strongly advised the 2024 Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama to hold the bull by the horns and ensure very competent appointees help him fix the crisis Ghana is facing today.

According to the King, John Mahama must guard against surrounding himself with loyalists who ll wichurn out mediocrity.

“When you get the nod from Ghanaians, do not shy away from reshuffling your team to get the right ones on board by merits and competence and lay off even loyalists but misfits who will only churn out mediocrity for your government,” – he emphasized
In a statement read on his behalf when John Mahama paid a courtesy call on him at the Gbewaa Palace, Yaa-Naa Abukari II explained that the counsel applies especially to those who will form his next cabinet “this applies especially to your kitchen cabinet, because they in reality rule you and the country” – he noted.

He warned that the wrath of Ghanaians will not elude him if he does not learn from the past.
“That will be a mistake and no Ghanaian will forgive you if you happen to be the chosen one” – he stated expressing hope that John Mahama’s return as President, will be a greater good for the country.

“We understand that you seek to serve our country once again with dedication, wisdom and deep commitment to the well-being of all it’s citizens”.

“I believe you are not coming to make more money for your family but to leave a legacy that your children will not only be proud of but will pave the way for them wherever they find themselves in the future when you are long gone to your maker,” he added.

John Mahama accompanied by Dr Calistus Mahama, NDC General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey, former Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, former Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, MPs and some former appointees are touring the Northern region as part of his Building Ghana Tour.

Mahama slams government for abandoning Yendi Water Supply project

2024 Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama has expressed disappointment that eight years on, government has not been able to complete the Yendi Water Supply project.

The former President who was speaking during a courtesy call on the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abubakari Mahama II, as part of his tour of the Northern region, expressed disappointment that, nothing much has changed after the preparatory works handed over to the Nana Akufo Addo led government.

“I am disappointed that in spite of all the works we did government abandoned the Yendi Water supply project. 8yrs on there is still no water in Yendi” – he emphasized.

He assured that the next NDC government, which completed the design for the expansion of the Yendi water supply system, will work hard to fix the perineal crisis to provide enough water for the Yendi Municipality and the surrounding towns.
” I want to assure that when we come, the Yendi Water supply system will be my priority and we will ensure that you will not be thirsty again” he told the Yaa Naa.

The former President, also promised to build a referral hospital at Yendi, to help bridge the gap in health care access within the Dagbon enclave.
It will be recalled that 29th July 2020, barely four months to the elections, President Nana Akufo Addo led a funfair to cut sod for the water project.
According to him then, a $30 million facility from the India Exim Bank, secured was to supply fifteen thousand (15,000) cubic meters of water daily to the people of Yendi, Ghani (Ngani), Sambu, Adobo, Sokoli, Nakpachei, Gbungbalaga and Kuga when completed.

“Yaa-Na Mahama Abukari II, when I told you that ‘great days lie ahead of Dagbon’, this is what I meant, as this Project signals the beginning of infrastructural development for Yendi. And, as you know by now, when Akufo-Addo makes a promise, he keeps it.” – he promised.
Almost four years on, the project has virtually been abandoned.

Sally Mann breaks down in tears as she calls on Ghanaians to support Moesha’s GoFundMe account.

Controversial entertainment pundit, Sally Mann shed tears uncontrollably while calling on the general public to contribute to the GoFundMe account which is set up to help Moesha Boduong’s ailing situation.

Before her breakdown, she fumed about the rate at which some individuals recollect what Moesha did in the past to condemn her in these troubling times and advised them not to judge her because only God knows about everyone’s destiny.

Sally Mann stated that those who are annoyed by Moesha’s utterances and lifestyle and hence would not donate to her should desist from tarnishing her image to the general public to discourage others from contributing their quota to support her.

Speaking in an interview with Power FM and monitored by GhanaWeb, an emotional Sally Mann urged the general public to donate to Moesha’s GoFundMe account to help her situation because nothing would be gained if she died from her sickness.

“I beg Ghanaians that if there is a way that we can save that girl’s [Moesha] life, we should help. Because people’s ways are not God’s ways. Maybe you think she is a waste but for all you know she might even be saved in heaven when the time comes.

“If you’re not going to help don’t stop people from helping her because she is sick and she can die. if that happens, what would you gain from it? Don’t look at what she has done with her life, help her because she is somebody’s daughter,” she said amid tears as a co-pundit consoled her.

Sally’s comment comes after some sections of the public criticized Moesha Buduong for not saving enough funds to cater for herself while she was enjoying life and dating affluent men.

Moesha’s brother, Ebito in a press statement confirmed reports that his sister had suffered a stroke and is in critical condition.

He also went ahead and appealed for funds for Moesha’s treatment at the hospital.

According to a GoFundMe account set up in his name to raise funds for Moesha, Ebito Bodoung said that the stroke has impaired her mobility and speech and that she needs urgent medical attention.

He is asking the public to support him with any amount they can to help Moesha recover.

According to the statement, the funds received will cater for various expenses including therapy sessions and assistive devices.

The account has a target of $10,000 (GHC123,600) and would be looking forward to hit the target.

Since the announcement was made, some individuals have donated some funds to support her.

See list of universities ‘built’ by NDC that Akufo-Addo has renamed

The flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress, (NDC) John Dramani Mahama, has promised to revert the names of public universities which were renamed by Presdient Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to their original names if the NDC comes into office in 2025.

Mr Mahama accused Nana Akufo-Addo and his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), of merely renaming universities constructed by the NDC, emphasizing that the NPP had not established any new universities while in office.

The former President, who was speaking during his ‘Building the Ghana We Want’ tour at Zuarungu, in the Upper East Region said what is even more funny about the current NPP government’s action is that they are failing to add up but renaming institutions built by the NDC after members of the NPP tradition.

“We will add other people and name the infrastructure in the Universities after them. But if the university is the University for Development Studies, that is its core mandate. It will be called the University for Development Studies,” – he explained.

He added – “And so, we will restore the original names, and the names that they have given them will be given to a significant infrastructure in the Universities.

Find below a list of some of the Universities affected.

1. University of Development Studies, Navrongo – UDS Navrongo
The University of Development Studies (UDS) was established by the Jerry John Rawlings-led – NDC government with several campuses across the northern parts of Ghana.
President Akufo-Addo changed of name the Navrongo campus of the UDS in the Upper East Region to CK Tedam University for Technical and Applied Sciences
He announced the name change at the burial ceremony of the late, CK Tedam, a New Patriotic Party founding member.
The change according to him is to honour the former Chairman of the Council of Elders of the NPP and to also make the campus an autonomous university.

2. University of Development Studies, Wa
Nana Akufo-Addo again changed the name of the UDS campus in Wa in the Upper West Region to Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies.
The university’s new name is after Simon Diedong Dombo, a Ghanaian politician, teacher and king who belonged to the United Party (UP) tradition, of which the New Patriotic Party has its roots.
Simon Dombo was a Member of Parliament during the First Republic of Ghana. The decision according to the government will transform the existing campus of the University of Development Studies (UDS) campus in Wa into a fully-fledged university.

3. Ho Technical University
The Ho Technical University (HTU), which was formerly known as Ho Polytechnic, was also renamed by Akufo-Addo as the Ephraim Amu Technical University.
President Akufo-Addo announced the name change during the grand durbar of the 50th-anniversary celebration of the university.

4. University of Energy and Natural Resources – UENR
The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Sunyani in the Bono Region was renamed after the late Prime Minister of the Second Republic, Professor Kofi Abrefa Busia, by Akufo-Addo
According to the president, Dr K.A Busia is an illustrious son of the region, hence the decision to honour him by naming the university after him.
UENR was established by an Act of the Parliament of Ghana, Act 830, 2011 on December 31, 2011 by the government of the late Prof John Evans Atta Mills

5. University of Education, Winneba, Kumasi Campus – UEW Kumasi
President Akufo-Addo also renamed the Kumasi campus of the University of Education, Winneba, which was established by the government of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, as the Akenten Appiah Menka University of Skills and Entrepreneurial Development.
He announced that the Kumasi campus of the University of Education will become an autonomous institution under the name, University of Skills and Entrepreneurial Development.
He noted that the decision is far advanced in making the school an autonomous institution.

6. University of Mines and Technology – UMAT
President Akufo-Addo officially renamed the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) to the George Grant University of Mines and Technology, after the first President of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC).
The Tarkwa-based tertiary institution was renamed on Friday, January 12, 2018, at a special congregation held at the school to install former President John Kufuor as its Chancellor.

A Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) letter approving the importation of cocoa beans has sparked an uproar in the world’s second-largest cocoa-producing country.

In the letter dated January 25, 2024, the management of COCOBOD authorises Afrotropic Cocoa Processing Company to import 3500 metric tonnes of cocoa beans from Cote d’Ivoire and Nigeria.

While the letter does not state the reasons behind the importation, the Ghanaian populace took to social media to lament the development.

Reactions generally alleged a possible collapse of cocoa production in Ghana, a sector deemed the backbone of the West African state’s economy.
However, according to industry experts, permitting cocoa bean importation from elsewhere is nothing new.

A source said that for several years, Ghana’s cocoa regulator has been approving the importation of some quantities of the commodity for the utilisation of processors.

“It’s the routine; it’s allowed,” a contact with knowledge of the matter told Cocoa Post, adding that “they can [import] if they want to.”

Twelve cocoa processing companies operate in Ghana, with a combined installed capacity of about 500,000 metric tonnes. They include Barry Callebaut, Niche Cocoa, Cocoa Touton, Cargill, Chocomac, Olam, Afrotropic, WAMCO, and CPC.
“All these processors have a clause in their cocoa supply contract with COCOBOD that allows them to import cocoa beans with prior approval,” the expert stated.

Another industry connoisseur, however, insisted that companies desirous of importing “must clearly indicate the purpose,” as per the rule.
“In the past, some companies got approval to import cocoa beans to enable them to meet client’s recipe specifications,” this source revealed.
A Cocobod document available to Cocoa Post lends credence to that explanation. In November 2016, Barry Callebaut received the nod “to import 100 MT of cocoa beans from Ecuador as part of [their] operational requirements for a particular recipe for a customer,” an excerpt from the document read.
COCOBOD Statement
A statement issued by the Public Affairs unit of COCOBOD on Sunday afternoon emphasised that the development “is an industry practice.” It said this “has existed for over 20 years to allow factories to import from other countries, including Cote d’Ivoire, Togo, Nigeria, and Ecuador.”
“Ghana’s cocoa is a premium cocoa, and as part of cost management and operational strategy, companies often blend premium Ghana cocoa with less premium cocoa beans from other producing countries,” Cocobod explained.
A cocoa specialist who wants their identity withheld upheld the Ghana regulator’s explanation. “No confectionery or chocolate manufacturer in Europe, Japan, or the US can afford to make products with 100% premium Ghana cocoa and remain in business,” the expert argued.
For example, some European chocolatiers are known to import 100% semi-finished premium Ghana cocoa products like liquor and mix them with similar products from elsewhere in their factories to attain certain recipe standards.
“Others will minimise production costs by requesting a processor in Ghana to import less expensive origins to blend with Ghana to, for instance, achieve their FFA (free fatty acids) content specifications,” they noted.

More Questions than Answers

Reacting to COCOBOD‘s statement, Ghanaian cocoa civil society actors say the press statement raises more questions than it purported to answer.
“The question we are asking is, has Cocobod been able to meet the local industry’s cocoa supply needs and contracts?” quizzed Elvis Oppong-Mensah, the Programme Officer at Civic Response Ghana.

“I believe after supplying to the foreign companies to whom we owe an obligation to supply because we have borrowed from them, there is little left to supply to the local industry,” suggested Oppong-Mensah.
According to the civil society front, there are also questions about the sheer quantities of cocoa beans being imported now compared to the smaller quantities in the past, the timing, and the reasons for the importation.

The country is currently in the main crop season, which averagely accounts for about 85% of Ghana’s annual output, with the light crop cocoa making up for the remaining 15%.

Obed Owusu Addai is the Executive Director of EcoCare Ghana and a Co-Convenor of the Ghana Civil-society Cocoa Platform (GCCP).

“There is an inherent underlying problem that COCOBOD, per their press release, is trying to avoid, which is not helpful for the cocoa sector,” Addai observed.

Cocoa Shortage

The Ghana Cocoa Board has since December 2023 received an $800-million cocoa syndicated loan to purchase Ghana’s 2023/24 cocoa crop.

“The problem is the evident shortage of cocoa beans caused by delays in the release of funds to LBCs as well as rumours of smuggling of beans along Ghana’s border towns, especially in the Oti Region,” Obed Owusu Addai alleged.

Last month, Cocoa Post broke the story of a looming cocoa supply crisis threatening the operations of local cocoa processing firms in Ghana.
An industry player hinted to this publication on anonymity that some local cocoa processors have temporarily halted operations or are having to import cocoa beans because of Cocoa Marketing Company’s inability to honour supply contracts paid for in advance.

“It is sad that a country that has recently produced over 1,000,000 metric tonnes of cocoa is now importing cocoa beans to feed its local processors.
If the farmer is not made a priority, the future of the cocoa industry is bleak,” Addai warned.
