Emission Levy can’t save Ghana’s economy – B.O.T

Chartered Economist and member of the opposition NDC, Bernard Oduro Takyi has chastised the Akufo-Addo government over the implementation of the new vehicle tax.

In a joint statement with Sulleyman Abdul-Wahab, the political analyst said the Emission Levy was likely to cause more hardship in the country.

To him, the levy which took effect on February 1,2024, is a nuisance tax that will affect businesses negatively.

Below is the statement;

The Vehicle Emissions Tax in Retrospect; Why NPP and Dr Bawumia should never be given the opportunity to come anywhere near the management of Ghana’s economy.

Government of Ghana under the Economic Management Team led by HE Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has imposed a Vehicle Emissions Tax (VET) on all motor vehicles to raise additional tax revenue to dig out the economy from the ditch.

All things considered, the government is expected to raise an amount of $40m annually.

If the $2b IMF/WB support is not enough to pull Dr Bawumia’s economy out of the ditch but a meagre $40m is what is needed, then the economy is truly in a more dire straits than anyone could ever contemplate.

The dynamics of Public Policies come with complexities in the area of options and trade offs.

This requires careful thinking to arrive at what the best possible options should be. You cannot just conceive of a policy such as this and proceed to implement it without thoroughly thinking through it.
In as much as Public Policies are supposed to enhance productivity, growth and development of businesses, this tax handle particularly will destroy thousands of businesses, loss of jobs with negative consequences on the struggling banking sector.

Governments use tax policies not only for revenue generation but also to direct consumption of goods, services and the general direction of the country.

As it appears now, Dr Bawumia and his team are completely tired in their heads and have no clue about the implications of their policy choices on the citizens, businesses and the entire economy.

There’s a subtle illusive objective to clean up the environment. That means, citizens are being punished for using vehicles that emit. That’s to say that, we must discard our current diesel/petrol vehicles for electric cars, otherwise we’ll be subjected to Dr Bawumia’s tax punishment.

Cars, for most people today, have become a necessity, and not a luxuries. So, the first question Dr Bawumia and his team must answer is, where are these electric cars being sold in Ghana to be bought by the ordinary man if he/she has the money?

How much are these electric cars being sold for? This question is relevant because, most Ghanaians don’t buy brand new cars off the shelves. We buy slightly used cars (pre-owned vehicles) because of price. The electric cars aren’t available in this option as of now. So, for now, every vehicle user must suffer the punitive tax (emissions tax) that’s why vehicle users are up in arms against this tax.

We are effectively being told to discard our current diesel and petrol vehicles. The question is, if the government is directing me to discard my emitting vehicle, who am I going to sell it to? Because everyone else is being encouraged to buy an electric car, I’ll have to discount my car to get a buyer to offload it to.
On a personal level, I’m losing value because of this policy.

AUTO DEALERS AND GARAGE OWNERS IN GHANA

Auto dealers who took bank facilities running into millions of dollars and imported diesel and petrol cars into their garages risk being stranded as they may have difficulty selling them because government says everyone must move to electric cars. As loans accrue interest against the backdrop of low sales, they will lay off workers.

BANKING SECTOR
From the aforementioned, significant quantities of unserviced loans could lead to impairments/bad debts with a potential to trigger banking crisis.

Why will anyone implement such a policy to raise a paltry $40m with great potential to cause this amount of harm to sections of the economy? You do not chew up your tongue because you crave khebab. It is only ignorance of public policy, tax revenue desperation or downright incompetence that may lead a government here.

FUEL STATIONS
With the push for electric cars to save the environment, we hope the government expects all current diesel and petrol filling stations will fold up, lay off workers and dismantle their expensive infrastructure against the heavy investment costs (Bank Loans) which some are yet to recover.
This is yet another effect on the banking sector. Perhaps the government sees an easy pathway to converting filling stations to electric car filling points.

ELECTRIC CAR FILLING POINTS
Let’s even, for a moment assume that the electric cars are available and cheap for Ghanaians to buy: let Dr Bawumia and his people tell us where the electric fuel infrastructure is in Ghana. Are such facilities sufficiently available in the country?
Again, do we have enough electricity generation capacity to meet the demands of electric cars without causing electricity supply shortfalls/disruptions (dumsor)?

ABOSSEY OKAI TRADERS & MECHANICS

Mechanics and spare part dealers of Abossey Okai, Suame Magazine etc, which have traditionally supported NPP stand to be hugely affected by this poorly thought through policy. Used cars parts traders in this category deal in petrol and diesel parts. If the economy begins to reject diesel and petrol cars in favor of Bawumia’s electric cars, it invariably means that sales of the parts imported by Abossey, Okai Suame Magazine etc guys will drop. Their investments could even disappear with massive job losses.

Will the proponents of this tax extend this same punishment to outboard motor vehicles being used by our hardworking Fisherfolks? It looks like that’s the direction of this government because they are also, vehicles that emit.

What about those massive GenSets that often come alive emitting fumes in factories, offices and homes each time our lights go off. What about the smoking chamber police vehicles on our streets. Will they pay?

This whole tax is one that is being arbitrarily and capriciously applied. No equity in application. Why should a fairly brand new efficient car pay as much emission tax as the 40 year old bus running Odorkor-Circle?
In most countries where emissions tax is in force, vehicles are tested for their emissions, and the fumes are measured and charged accordingly and proportionately. In some cases too, the vehicles are changed only when they move into certain pre-defined territories.
Our leaders should for once, pause and think.

Ghana is one big contradiction. On one hand, we are busily exploiting our natural resources, selling out oil blacks to investors, earning millions in oil revenue, setting up and commissioning oil refineries and on the other, developing policies to discourage the use of petroleum fuels.

Our leaders are a complete sellout that seems to be following the metropolitan slave masters sheepishly and implementing their recommendations without thinking about their implications.
In all known development theories, there is no country that has developed without first, industrialising. It is worth noting that industrialization comes with emissions.
But after they have achieved the end of industrialization, they have managed to convince our leaders that emission is not good. We should not go through that route.
Our leaders have swallowed it, hook-line-and-sinker.
Did they even ask themselves, how much of a pollution a country like Ghana emits?
Let’s wake up

Jay-Z shades the Recording Academy in Grammys speech.

Jay-Z used his speech at the Grammy Awards to get some things off his chest.

While accepting the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award with his 12-year old daughter Blue Ivy by his side, Jay-Z noted that the industry had come a long way since Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff boycotted the Grammys in 1989 over the rap awards not being televised.

“And then they went to a hotel and watched the Grammys,” Jay-Z said. “I ain’t even understand… it wasn’t a great boycott.”

The rapper and entrepreneur said that he, too, boycotted attending the Grammys in 1998 over DMX not being nominated, despite having two successful albums that year.

“I’m just saying, we love y’all, we love ya’ll, we love y’all and we want y’all to get it right,” Jay-Z said. “At least get it close to right.”

Noting that the voting is subjective, he then brought his wife Beyoncé into the conversation.

“I don’t want to embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than anyone, and never won album of the year,” he said of Beyoncé. “Even by your own metric that does not work. Think about that, most Grammys, never won album of the year, that doesn’t work.”

Bey became the most awarded artist in Grammys history, with a record 32 wins, at last year’s ceremony. The award that put her over the edge was best dance/electronic album, which she won for her celebrated record, “Renaissance.”

Beyoncé supporters have long complained she has consistently been shut out of winning the prestigious album of the year Grammy.

During his speech Sunday night, Jay-Z quipped, “Some of you are going to go home tonight and feel like you’ve been robbed.”

“Some of you may get robbed,” he said. “Some of you don’t belong in the category.”

As the audience tittered at that shade, Jay-Z said, “When I get nervous I tell the truth.”

“Outside of that we got to keep showing up,” he said. “And forget the Grammys for a second. Just in life.”

“Just keep showing up,” he added. “You got to keep showing up until they give you all those accolades you feel you deserve. Until they call you chairman, until they call you a genuis, until they call you the greatest of all time. You feel me ‘’.

Brazilian’s treble secures 4-2 victory as Gary O’Neil’s men move above Blues into 10th place

Matheus Cunha scored a hat-trick as Wolverhampton Wanderers produced an impressive 4-2 victory against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

It was the Blues who took the lead through Cole Palmer as he scored his 10th Premier League goal of the season, but Wolves turned the match around through a deflected Cunha strike and an Axel Disasiown goal.

Cunha then added his second and third goals in the second half before Thiago Silva scored a consolation goal for Chelsea, as Wolves secured a first Premier League double over their opponents.

Chelsea made two changes from their 4-1 loss at Liverpool on Wednesday, with Christopher Nkunku and Malo Gusto coming in for Noni Madueke and Benoit Badiashile.

After their last-gasp defeat to Manchester United on Thursday, Wolves made three alterations to their line-up as Joao Gomes, Pablo Sarabia and Rayan Alt-Nouricame into the XI.

Both teams created early chances, with Wolves’ Cunha and Pedro Neto forcing saves from Djordje Petrovicwhile Nkunku clipped the ball over Jose Sa, but was unable to tap in.

Palmer opened the scoring in the 20th minute, producing a fine right-footed finish across goal after being played in by Moises Caicedo..

That made it 10 goals in the Premier League this season for Palmer, who at the age of 21 years and 274 days became the youngest Chelsea player to produce double figures in a single campaign, breaking the record set by Arjen Robben (21 years and 342 days).

Wolves didn’t let that goal deflate them, though, and were level only two minutes later. Caicedo was dispossessed by Joao Gomes, who passed the ball to Cunha. He cut inside before producing a strike that took a huge deflection off Thiago Silva and wrongfooted Petrovic.

Moments before half-time, Wolves took the lead through Disasi inadvertently deflecting Ait-Nouri’s effort past Petrovic.

Chelsea brought on Nicolas Jackson, returning from the Africa Cup of Nations after Senegal were knocked out, as they sought an equaliser.

But it was Wolves who struck next as Cunha scored his second, sweeping the ball past Petrovic from Neto’s cutback, for the Portuguese winger’s eighth assist of the season.

Jackson did have a chance to halve the deficit moments later, but his close-range header went wide.

Cunha completed his hat-trick on 82 minutes, from a penalty he won by being fouled by Gusto.

It made him only the fourth visiting player to score a Premier League hat-trick at Stamford Bridge, after Arsenal’s Kanu (1999) and Robin van Persie (2011), and Sergio Aguero for Manchester City in 2016.

Chelsea did get a consolation goal with four minutes remaining as Thiago Silva rose highest to convert Mykhailo Mudryk’s corner, but that was all.

Wolves’ fourth win in six matches move them on to 32 points, leapfrogging Chelsea into 10th.

United earn 3-0 win to move up to sixth in table.

Alejandro Garnacho’s double and a Rasmus Hojlund strike on his 21st birthday gave Manchester United a comfortable 3-0 win over West Ham United to climb above their opponents into sixth.

It is successive Premier League victories for United as they continue their unbeaten start to 2024.

Prior to kick-off, managers Erik ten Hag and David Moyes carried out wreaths to honour the victims of the Munich air disaster, which happened 66 years ago.

The first chance of the match fell to West Ham on 11 minutes, when Tomas Soucek’s deflected header from James Ward-Prowse’s outswinging corner forced a fine save from Andre Onana.

At the other end, Bruno Fernandes’ dipping long-range strike was pushed away at full stretch by Alphonse Areola.

Man Utd took the lead on 23 minutes through Hojlund, who unleashed a brilliant low right-footed shot past Areola to score in his fourth consecutive Premier League appearance.

Hojlund is only the second player to find the back of the net on his 21st birthday in the competition, along with Noel Whelan in 1995.

West Ham made a change during the break with Lukasz Fabianski replacing Areola due to an apparent head injury.

The Hammers had a great chance to equalise on 48 minutes as Emerson dispossessed Harry Maguire and ran through on goal, but the Italian fired his shot over the crossbar.

Less than a minute later, Man Utd doubled their lead when Garnacho cut inside before his left-footed attempt went in via a deflection off Nayef Aguerd. Garnacho celebrated by sitting on the advertising hoardings, a celebration used often this season by West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus.

West Ham did have a chance to reduce the deficit and Jarrod Bowen should have made more of a 1v1 situation, but his attempt was thwarted by Diogo Dalot, who slid in to produce a brilliant last-ditch tackle.

United were dealt a blow on 70 minutes when Lisandro Martinez was forced off with an injury.

Garnacho scored his second of the match with six minutes remaining. Scott McTominay took the ball off West Ham substitute Kalvin Phillips and surged forward before playing in the Argentinian to slot home.

McTominay could have added a fourth, but dragged his shot wide in stoppage time.

United move above West Ham and have 38 points, eight behind fourth-placed Aston Villa.

The Hammers are two points below in seventh.

Arsenal beat Liverpool’s to close the gap to two points.

Arsenal reduced Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League to two points after a deserved victory in a tense encounter at Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners knew defeat was unthinkable and their cause was helped hugely by two errors from Liverpool’s normally reliable keeper Alisson, who gifted Arsenal the goals that ensured three crucial points.

It sparked joyous scenes at the final whistle as Arsenal condemned Liverpool to only their second league defeat this season, their first since a highly controversial loss at Tottenham in late September.

Arsenal were rewarded for a lightning start when Bukayo Saka gave them a 14th-minute lead, turning home a rebound after Alisson saved from Kai Havertz.

The hosts dominated proceedings but a defensive shambles allowed Liverpool to restore parity seconds before the break, Gabriel turning the ball into his own net via his hand after a mix-up between keeper David Raya and William Saliba as they challenged Luis Diaz.

Liverpool carried more momentum after the interval with Alexis Mac Allister going close twice and Curtis Jones just off target before the Gunners were the next beneficiaries of a calamitous error, this time between Alisson and Virgil van Dijk, that saw them restore their lead after 67 minutes.

Alisson rushed from his goal and kicked fresh air as Van Dijk tried to deal with a long clearance, leaving Gabriel Martinelli with the simplest of finishes into an empty net.

And Liverpool’s misery was compounded in the closing stages when defender Ibrahima Konate was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Havertz, before substitute Leandro Trossard added a third in stoppage time – Alisson once again at fault as he allowed a routine near-post shot through his legs.

Arsenal’s worst fears were sweeping around the Emirates when a defensive blunder seconds before half-time allowed Liverpool to go in level, after Mikel Arteta’s side had controlled the first 45 minutes and barely allowed the league leaders a chance.

The atmosphere was suddenly subdued, the mood shifting markedly, and when Liverpool looked to move through the gears in the early stages of the second half Arsenal looked unsettled.

Instead the Gunners showed great character to gather themselves and reassert their authority and – while they were thankful for a rare off-day from the usually outstanding Alisson – this was a real show of steel that resulted in a win that will send belief surging through Arteta and his players.

Arsenal wanted to banish memories of their recent FA Cup third-round loss here to Liverpool, when they paid the price for missing a succession of chances, and this was the perfect response on a day when another defeat would have surely ended their title hopes.

Now, after a win at Nottingham Forest on Tuesday, this has been an ideal week for the Gunners who are right in the heart of the Premier League title race.

And at the heart of this win was the exciting Martinelli, a constant threat to Liverpool as well as a goalscorer, while Declan Rice was imperious in midfield.

The celebrations after the final whistle showed how important this was to Arsenal – and who can blame them for enjoying the moment?

Below-par Liverpool lack usual spark

Liverpool did not deserve anything from this display, its off-colour nature summed up by the manner of the two goals that gave Arsenal a victory they fully merited.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were fortunate to go in level at half-time, having been presented with an equaliser no-one in the stadium saw coming, although there were signs early in the second half that they were in the mood to cash in on that gift.

Instead, Arsenal’s win was rubber-stamped by farcical defending that put the Gunners back in charge.

Van Dijk was far too casual and seemed barely aware of Martinelli’s presence as he went to deal with a routine long clearance, the situation not helped by Alisson’s injudicious dash from goal and air-kick, leaving Arsenal’s forward to complete the formalities.

After Konate had been sent off, Trossard was allowed to run unchallenged before embarrassing Alisson once more with a low shot through the keeper’s legs which completed a miserable match for the Brazilian.

Liverpool have coped superbly with the absence of Mohamed Salah, away with Egypt at the Africa Cup Of Nations where he sustained a hamstring injury, but were crying out for his brilliance here as they failed to even mount the traditional surge that has been their trademark.

There is no need to panic for the Reds, who are still clear at the top of the table, but there will be real disappointment that they delivered such a poor performance in a game where they could conceivably have killed off Arsenal’s title challenge.

Namibia’s new President Mbumba sworn-in hours after predecessor dies.

Namibia has a new president in the shape of Nangolo Mbumba just hours after, as vice-president, he had announced the death of his predecessor.

Hage Geingob, 82, died early on Sunday while receiving medical treatment at a hospital in the capital, Windhoek.

A veteran of the country’s independence struggle, Mr Geingob had been diagnosed with cancer and revealed the details to the public last month.

The nation had lost a “liberation… icon”, Mr Mbumba said.

He has since been sworn-in as Mr Geingob’s replacement and will serve in the role until elections due later this year.

“I am not going to be around for the elections so don’t panic,” he said at a swiftly arranged swearing-in ceremony at state house, just 15 hours after the death of the president.

Paying tribute to his predecessor, he said “our nation remains calm and stable owing to the leadership of President Geingob who was the chief architect of the constitution”.

“I take on this heavy mantle cognisant of the weight of responsibility.”

Mr Geingob was first sworn-in as president in 2015, but had served in top political positions since independence in 1990.

The exact cause of his death was not given but last month he underwent “a two-day novel treatment for cancerous cells” in the US before flying back home on 31 January, his office had said.

On Namibian radio, people have been sharing memories of someone they described as a visionary as well as a jovial man, who was able to share a joke.

Leaders from around the world have been sending condolence messages with many talking about Mr Geingob’s efforts to ensure his country’s freedom.

Among them has been Cyril Ramaphosa, president of neighbouring South Africa, who described him as “a towering veteran of Namibia’s liberation from colonialism and apartheid”.

Mr Geingob, a tall man with a deep, gravelly voice and a commanding presence was a long-serving member of the Swapo party. It led the movement against apartheid South Africa, which had effectively annexed the country, then known as South West Africa, and introduced its system of legalised racism that excluded black people from political and economic power.

Mr Geingob lived in exile for 27 years, spending time in Botswana, the US and the UK, where he studied for a PhD in politics.

He came back to Namibia in 1989, a year before the country gained independence.

“Looking back, the journey of building a new Namibia has been worthwhile,” he wrote on social media in 2020 while sharing a picture of him kissing the ground on his return.

“Even though we have made a lot of progress in developing our country, more work lies ahead to build an inclusive society.”

When Mr Geingob first became president in 2015, he had already been the country’s longest-serving prime minister – in the post for 12 years from 1990 and then again for a shorter stint in 2012.

But going by results at the ballot box, his popularity had declined.

In the 2014 election, he won a huge majority, taking 87% of the vote. But five years later that had fallen to 56%.

Mr Geingob’s first term coincided with a stagnant economy and high levels of unemployment and poverty, according to the World Bank.

His party also faced a number of corruption scandals during his time in office. This included what became known as “fishrot”, where ministers and top officials were accused of taking bribes in exchange for the awarding of lucrative fishing quotas

By 2021, three-quarters of the population thought that the country was going in the wrong direction, a three-fold increase since 2014, according to independent polling organisation Afrobarometer.

Three decades after independence, the heroic narrative of Swapo having liberated the country was losing its appeal among a generation born after the event, long-time observer of Namibian politics Henning Melber wrote in 2021.

Swapo, in power since independence, had chosen Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as its presidential candidate for November’s planned elections.

She has now been appointed vice-president and will become the country’s first female president if she wins.

Aston Villa put 5 pass Sheffield United to move into top four .

Aston Villa dismantled Sheffield United to move back into the Premier League’s top four with a thumping victory which leaves the Blades rooted to the bottom of the table.

Unai Emery’s side overwhelmed the woeful hosts with four goals inside the opening half hour at Bramall Lane – by John McGinn, Ollie Watkins, Leon Bailey and Youri Tielemans – before Alex Moreno added a fifth after the break.

McGinn slotted his 12th-minute opener into a vacant goal after Blades skipper Anel Ahmedhodzic managed to hook Watkins’ goal-bound shot off the line – but Watkins did not miss his next opportunity, finding the bottom corner after receiving a wonderful outside-of-the-boot pass from Douglas Luiz.

The alarm bells were ringing loudly for Chris Wilder’s side when Bailey curled in a delightful third inside 20 minutes, leading some home supporters to head for an early exit.

Villa pressed for more and Tielemans, having just seen a shot headed off the line, unleashed a blistering strike from the edge of the box following the resulting corner to add a fourth as Bramall Lane continued to empty.

Those home fans who remained made their feelings clear as the half-time whistle was met with boos but their collective mood only worsened just 83 seconds after the restart when Moreno volleyed in Watkins’ cross to make it 5-0.

Substitute Moussa Diaby’s fierce strike was saved by Foderingham as Villa sought to add to their tally, while Sheffield United were denied a late consolation when Vinicius Souza’s injury-time finish was ruled out for offside.

Victory moved Villa level on points with second-placed Manchester City and Arsenal directly above them, although they have played more games than both of those sides.

But for Sheffield United, now 10 points from safety, the picture appears increasingly gloomy.

Villa had not won at Sheffield United in the top flight for 30 years, last doing so in April 1994 – but they ended that wait in emphatic fashion on Saturday night.

Despite arriving in Sheffield with only one win in their past five league games – taking just five points during that run – an outstanding start to the campaign has ensured Emery’s side remain firmly in the fight for a Champions League place.

Defeat by Newcastle in midweek allowed Tottenham to leapfrog Villa into fourth but, as they now have following each of their five defeats this season, Villa responded to that setback with victory – this time to heap more misery on Sheffield United.

Watkins continues to impress as he aims to make Gareth Southgate’s England squad at Euro 2024 this summer, with his goal and two assists in this match making the 28-year-old the first player to reach double figures for both goals (11) and assists (10) in the Premier League this season.

Bailey also shone in a fluid Villa attack which repeatedly sliced open the hosts’ defence with ease, the Jamaica forward displaying his quality in front of goal with a well-taken finish in a complete performance.

Villa threatened to humiliate the hosts when Moreno made it five shortly after half-time, but that tally was enough to give Villa their biggest away win in the Premier League since April 2008 as Emery’s side comfortably saw out victory.

“I’m happy because before the match we were very focused to react [to the Newcastle loss]. We scored goals, created chances and stopped them,” Emery told BBC Sport.

“We have to try to focus each match. We’re really happy. Our aggression was fantastic.”

Sheffield United were outclassed in every department and, on this evidence, appear destined for an immediate return to the Championship.

In Premier League history, the three previous teams to accumulate as few as 10 points at this stage of the season have all been relegated.

The Blades look increasingly likely to suffer the same fate. In desperate need of a rapid upturn in form, they instead suffered a significant setback here – not least to their belief.

They have won twice all season, are winless in seven league games, and have conceded the most goals of any side at this stage of a top-flight campaign since 1965-66.

The seats were rapidly emptying inside 30 minutes, with loud boos at the full-time whistle. United have now lost 31 of their 40 most recent Premier League games under Wilder, who has overseen one win in eight games since he was reappointed in early December.

Their only threatening spell arrived inside the closing 15 minutes, when Emiliano Martinez was forced to make a double save and Jack Robinson had an attempt headed off the line.

But there were few positives for Wilder, who made five changes from the midweek loss to Crystal Palace, and his players must now recover for a crucial trip to fellow promoted side Luton Town next weekend.

“We have to apologise to our supporters because they’ve been superb. We’ve let them down this evening,” said Wilder.

“I don’t think there’s anything to take out of today’s performance. Nothing at all. We’ve been well and truly pumped.”

‘Rocky’ star Carl Weathers dead at 76

“Rocky” star Carl Weathers has died, according to a statement from his family. The actor was 76.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carl Weathers,” his family said in a statement. “He died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, February 1st, 2024. … Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend.”

Weathers played Apollo Creed in the first four moviesin the “Rocky” series. He also starred opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in “Predator” and Adam Sandler in “Happy Gilmore.” In 2021, Weathers was nominated for an Emmy Award for his performance in the Disney+ “Star Wars” television series “The Mandalorian.”

Weathers made his first appearance as the cocky, undisputed heavyweight world champion in 1976’s “Rocky,” starring Sylvester Stallone. The actor reprised his role as Creed in 1979’s “Rocky II,” 1982’s “Rocky III” and 1985’s “Rocky IV.”

In the franchise’s fourth film, Creed memorably died in the ring during a fight against Soviet Union champion Ivan Drago, played by Dolph Lundgren. After Creed’s death, his son Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) would lead his own boxing trilogy starting in 2015.

On Friday, Stallone shared an emotional tribute to Weathers on Instagram. The three-time Academy Award nominee shared a video with the caption, “We lost a legend yesterday. My life was forever changed for the better the day I met Carl Weathers. Rest in power and keeping punching.”

In the video, Stallone was seen standing in front of a painting depicting a fight between Rocky and Creed.

“Hello, everyone. Today is an incredibly sad day for me,” Stallone said at the beginning of the clip.

He continued, “Carl Weathers was such an integral part of my life, my success, everything about it. I give him incredible credit and kudos because when he walked into that room, and I saw him for the first time, I saw greatness, but I didn’t realize how great.”

“I never could have accomplished what we did with ‘Rocky’ without him. He was absolutely brilliant. His voice, his size, his power, his athletic ability, but more importantly, his heart, his soul. It’s a horrible loss.”

Stallone noted that the painting behind him captured one of the last moments that he and Weathers were in the ring together, adding “I’ll never forget it.”

After landing his breakthrough role as Creed, Weathers went on to star in the 1987 science fiction action film “Predator” alongside Schwarzenegger, who would become the governor of California, and former professional wrestler Jesse Ventura, who later served as the governor of Minnesota.

Schwarzenegger honored his late co-star in a post he shared on Instagram Friday. He uploaded a slideshow featuring three photos of himself with Weathers in “Predator,” writing, “Carl Weathers will always be a legend. An extraordinary athlete, a fantastic actor, and a great person.”

He continued, “We couldn’t have made Predator without him. And we certainly wouldn’t have had such a wonderful time making it. Every minute with him – on set and off – was pure joy. He was the type of friend who pushes you to be your best just to keep up with him.”

“I’ll miss him, and my thoughts are with his family.”.

Nigerian traditional monarch shot dead and wife kidnapped

Armed men have shot dead a traditional ruler, and kidnapped his wife plus one other person in south-western Nigeria, authorities say.

The attackers stormed the palace of Segun Aremu – a retired army general and monarch whose official title is the Olukoro of Koro – on Thursday night.

It is not clear who the gunmen were or whether they are demanding a ransom.

This latest killing and abduction comes days after campaigners demanded a state of emergency to deal with the issue.

Some 50 civil society groups want President Bola Tinubu to make that declaration, saying more than 1,800 people had been abducted since he took office last May.

But the true number of abductions during that time could be more than double that figure, at almost 4,000 people, says Nigerian risk consultancy SBM Intelligence.

No matter how desperate the circumstances, Nigerian law prohibits the payment of ransom money. However, many victims pay up because they do not trust authorities or their track record.

Condemning the killing of the Olukoro of Koro in Kwara state, as “reckless, shocking, and abominable”, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has vowed that the authorities would catch those responsible.

Police say a manhunt is under way. They have also promised the local community they will set up a police outpost.

Nigeria is home to hundreds of traditional rulers, who have no constitutional role but are a respected presence in community life. They are often called upon to settle disputes between local people, and lead cultural activities.

Earlier this week, kidnappers seized five schoolchildren and four teachers in nearby Ekiti state, demanding a ransom of 100m naira ($110,000; £87,500) for their release.

A senior government official was kidnapped on Wednesday night in the Bwari suburb of the capital, Abuja, not far from the home of six sisters who were abducted for ransom last month with their father.

Elsewhere, two girls were also recently kidnapped in the Chikakorie area of Kubwa, another suburb of Abuja. Their abductors have demanded about $25,000 for their release.

Kidnapping for ransom has worsened in Nigeria in recent years with armed gangs targeting road travellers, students as well as residents in rural and urban areas across the country.

Organised Labour to hit street on Feb 13 against VAT imposition on electricity

Members of organised labour across Ghana have said they will lay down their tools on February 13 to protest against the government’s introduction of a 15 per cent value added tax (VAT) on residential electricity consumption.

The Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr Yaw Baah, who addressed the media at a press briefing Friday afternoon said the decision had been taken by the leadership of organised labour during a closed-door session.

The decision to protest he said, was deemed necessary due to the government’s failure to address their grievances regarding the imposition of VAT on electricity usage.

As a result, he called on all workers in Ghana to begin wearing ‘red’ to work from Monday to send a strong signal to the government that they won’t compromise till the government drops the decision to impose VAT on electricity.

“Today we hear they have imposed VAT on books and soon it will be water and then it will be on how many children we can have,” Dr Baah said.

You’ve taken so much taxes yet can’t pay public workers – Kwaku Boahen blasts Govt

A former Deputy National Communication Officer of the NDC, Kwaku Boahen has harshly criticised President Akufo-Addo over the labour unrest currently being witnessed in the country.

Speaking on Inside politics on TV XYZ, the vociferous politician said the government has been insensitive to the plights of workers and Ghanaians in general

“Today we can’t buy fuel, food, and yet we are being burdened with a lot of taxes. In all these, if the government cannot better the working conditions of service of public workers, then they have to go on strike,” he stated.

He urged the striking workers to continue to agitate for better working conditions until the government listens to them and do the right thing.

The Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWUG) are currently on strike over the payment of their Tier-two pension.

The strike started yesterday, February 1, 2024 over the government’s failure to address various concerns, including welfare needs, vehicle maintenance allowance, and overtime allowance.

The union has withdrawn various services, including cleaning the environment, setting up classrooms, providing security, and hospital services.

Kwaku Boahen believes TEWUG should have withdrawn their services long ago because the government deliberately decided to impose hardship on them.
