Supreme Court throws out Anas’ defamation suit against Ken Agyapong

The Supreme Court has rejected an application for certiorari filed against Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

The five-member panel, led by Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, upheld the previous ruling by the High Court.

Six years ago, a High Court in Accra dismissed a GHC25 million defamation lawsuit brought by Anas Aremeyaw Anas against Kennedy Agyapong and imposed a cost of GHC50,000 on the journalist.

Anas had alleged that the lawmaker defamed him, leading to legal proceedings initiated in 2018.

In a majority decision on Wednesday, February 28, the Supreme Court dismissed the case.

Despite the request from Kennedy Agyapong’s lawyer for costs to be awarded against Anas, the Supreme Court declined to do so.

The state of our nation is hopeless; Ghanaians won’t miss Akufo-Addo – Ato Forson

Minority Leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has said the country under President Akufo-Addo is a hopeless one where youth unemployment has skyrocketed and pushed Ghanaians into severe poverty.

Reacting to President Nana Akufo-Addo’s final State of the Nation address on Tuesday, February 27,2024, in Parliament, the MP for Ejumako Enyan Essiam said unemployment had soared to a point that “two out of three Ghanaians are jobless.”

“In a country of 33 million, only 11 million are employed,” he stated while criticising Akufo-Addo for neglecting policies that would have created sustainable jobs for the people of Ghana.

“Mr. Speaker, the state of our nation is hopeless. No wonder that ordinary Ghanaians including professionals are leaving our shores in droves, in search of greener pastures. Finally, Mr. Speaker, I am scandalized, I am shocked to the marrow to notice that our president following the recent ministerial reshuffle has increased the size of his government. Mr. Speaker, today we have a Minister of Finance International and Minister of Finance domestic.”

“Mr. Speaker, 1 dollar is today GH¢13. Mr. Speaker, under President Mahama, 1 dollar was 3 cedis, 80 pesewas. Mr. Speaker, a vote for Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia is a vote for President Akufo-Addo. Mr. Speaker, to conclude on the matter, Ghanaians voted for the President and appealed to the vice president to support him to succeed. Mr. Speaker, the president cannot fail alone. The President will have to fail together with the Vice-President so Mr. President, you have failed with your Vice President. Mr. Speaker, to conclude, Ghanaians will not miss Akufo-Addo and Alhaji Bawumia. We know you are going, and we can only wish you bye-bye.”

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo in his address said he had taken responsibility for his governance but hastened that the economy would do well.

He also revealed that his government has fulfilled  its pledge of settling the last coupons owed bondholders who signed up to the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).

He stated, “For the last leg of the domestic debt exchange on September 5, 2023, a week ago last Tuesday, on February 20, 2024, the second coupon of GH¢5.8 billion was paid to domestic bondholders. This is the largest coupon paid in a day in Ghana’s history.”

Touching on the external debt side, the president said his government has achieved a significant milestone by reaching an agreement with Ghana’s bilateral creditors.

“I will use this occasion to thank the Republic of China and France, co-chairs of the official creditors committee for their positive roles in this achievement.

“We have also intensified our engagement with our external bondholders on the principles of transparency, fair treatment consistent with the IMF debt sustainability analysis and good faith. We are focused and committed to accelerating the process,” he stated.

Those against NDC’s 24-hr economy are enemies of the state- BOT

Certified chartered economist, Bernard Oduro Takyi has said the NDC’s 24-hour economy policy proposal is feasible and can help revive the economic mess created by the NPP government.

He said despite doubts by some members of the NPP, the policy will be implemented by the NDC government to create more sustainable jobs for the youth once Ghanaians vote John Mahama to power.

“The next NDC government intends to create an enabling ecosystem, special tax incentives and special metering system for businesses that opt to be on the programme,” Oduro Takyi stated on Kessben TV morning show.

“At the craft of the policy, the private sector will lead the initiative. it is government innovation but will be led mainly by the private sector.”

He also explained that, “the 24-hour economy comes with two benefits for businesses. One of the benefits is that the government will give businesses that will sign onto the 24-hour economy special metres that will consume less electricity than the normal metres and cut cost of doing business so many people can be employed. Also, businesses that will sign onto the 24-hour economy will receive tax discounts.”

Benard Oduro Takyi also known as (B.O.T) indicated that the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has already affirmed that the 24-hour economy policy and stated that its a game changer and further highlighted that the Global Info Analytics has also conducted a research on three occasions, and the outcome was that the 24-hour economy is in the minds of Ghanaian electorates.

“The policy proposal is in the minds of Ghanaians, according t the polls so the NPP fanatics must stop pretending they haven’t heard of it,” he said. “Whoever speaks against the 24-hour economy policy is either an enemy of employment or enemy of the state”

BOT stated that t the dream of every business person is to get a ready market and John Dramani Mahama has said that he will establish an Accelerated Development Export Council and be the chairman of the institution.

“The purpose of the Accelerated Development Export Council is that if the country produces more and the supply is high above the demand, he will make sure the excess is exported for the country to earn foreign exchange,” he said.

Urging Ghanaians to trust in the policy, BOT emphasised on unemployment rate that has escalated to 14.7% in the past year and thus, Ghanaians must trust the flag bearer of the NDC, former president John Mahama and vote him to power to execute the policies of the NDC that are geared toward creating more jobs.

Ghana Card isn’t Bawumia’s creation – NDC’s Yayra Koku

A Deputy Director of IT and Elections for the opposition NDC, Wisdom Yayra Koku Deku has chastised Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia for claiming glory for the Ghana Card project that has given Ghanaians a unique identity.

The former Head of Systems at the National Identification Authority challenged the vice president who is also the leader of the governing NPP to prove to Ghanaians how he initiated the identification project.

In an interview on Dwaboase programme on TV XYZ/Power FM, Yayra Koku explained that the Ghana Card project was initiated by the John Kufuor administration in 2008 and was continued by the Mills-Mahama administration, stressing that Bawumia was being dishonest claiming credit for the project.

“In 2008, we started to pilot the project under former President Kufuor. We started from the Central region and then to other regions where we registered Ghanaians and took their bio data,” he narrated while emphasizing that cards were not issued until the NDC came to power before the NIA begun issuing cards in the Greater Accra Region.

“In fact the NDC came to continue the project. In Greater Accra, we registered about 3 million people but we were able to distribute 900,000 because at the time, most of the people had migrated, ” he told host Kwame Minkah in Akan.

” How can Bawumia claim credit for a project that was launched in 2008… The NPP only took over from where the NDC left the project, ” he added.

His comment comes after Vice President Bawumia touted the project and attributed it to his hard work.

But Yayra Koku, reacting to the comment urged Ghanaians to disregard Bawumia, labeling him as a dishonest man.

Recently, Yayra Koku to to his X page to challenge the Vice president.

He recounted how Dr Bawumia paid a visit to NIA in 2017 with the current NCA Boss Mr Anokye and some CEOs and how, as the Head of Systems at the time, he took the vice president and his entourage through the NIA systems.

Attaching a picture of him and the entourage,  explaining the systems the NIA had in place, he said he explained how the NIA at the time was transitioning from the “old centralised system, which only captured two fingerprints, to a new system that will capture all ten fingerprints of an applicant, Iris, phone numbers for SIM registration, and issue cards immediately.”

He continued, ” As part of my briefing, I informed Dr. Bawumia and his team that we needed to transition to instant issuance printing because the previous system was expensive because it was centralised printing. That is, we register Ghanaians, bring their data to the NIA office, process it, print it, and return to the field to distribute it to applicants.”

He said with the new system, cards would be issued immediately.

“Again, I informed Dr. Bawumia and his team that the old system, which had approximately 16 million Ghanaians’ data, had been successfully migrated to the new system. This is to ensure data consistency and integrity. That is why if you register now and change your Date of Birth, and it does not match what you registered with in the previous system, it will be flagged for investigation,” Deku said.

He continued, ” Dr. Bawumia and his team were informed that the new system had completed the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) in December 2016 and was now ready for the final acceptance test, the Site Acceptance Test (SAT), prior to its launch. Dr. Bawumia and his team were also informed that the new system is a public-private partnership (PPP) between Margins Group and the NIA, with the first contract to pilot instant card issuance completed in 2013 as part of the FIMS project.”

Yayra Koku stated that it was surprising that Dr. Bawumia, in his lecture recently took credit for the new system while condemning the previous government for doing nothing.

According to him, the new system was in place before the NPP came to office.

“The only thing they [the NPP] have added is the Digital address field on the forms. That was even done wrongly, ” he added.

‘We don’t have an economy, so what is Ofori-Atta going to advise on?’ – Pianim

Renowned Ghanaian economist, Kwame Pianim has described as unfortunate the appointment of former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta as a Senior Presidential Adviser and Special Envoy for International Trade by President Akufo Addo.

Mr Ofori-Atta was relieved of his position as Finance Minister on Wednesday, February 14, and replaced with Mohammed Amin Adam.

Subsequently, the Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare in a statement dated February 15, announced the new role of the former Finance Minister.

But speaking on the AM Show, Mr. Pianim who is a leading member of the NPP slammed the appointment insisting it has eroded the goodwill that came with the recent reshuffle of ministers.

“Ken Ofori-Atta going is good for the optics. But the person who led us into the financial and economic crisis that we are in, we haven’t been here before… there has never been a time where Ghana has not been able to pay its bills and we are not going to start paying them until 2025 and this is the same guy who gets us kicked out of the Eurobond market, how can he be an envoy?

“I think Nana (President Akufo-Addo) knows that the international community are not that gullible so you don’t send him there. We don’t have an economy now, so what is he going to advise on?

“Too many people are walking around the Presidency. Let’s remove them. Both governments when they come, they remove a minister and he becomes special adviser at the presidency. We don’t want that,” he stressed.

Bawumia is being dishonest about improvement of Free SHS – Apaak

The Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Education Committee, Dr Clement Apaak, has, once again, exposed the inconsistencies in Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s plans for the Free Senior High School.

The MP for Builsa South in a statement criticized the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration for being dishonest about how they would want the pro-poor policy to be ran beyond 2025.

According to Dr Apaak, the government told the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that it will “review and rationalise the Free Senior High School (SHS) program” yet told Ghanaians otherwise.

” When dealing with the IMF, DMB/NPP say they will review and rationalise it. But, when dealing with Ghanaians, they say they will improve it,” the legislator said in his statement.

To him, Dr Bawumia’s stance about Free SHS depicts dishonesty which must not be countenanced.

“There is nothing bold in saying different things about the same issue to different categories of people or entities. Such conduct is not only insincere and dishonest but cowardly, ” Apaak criticized.

He believes the NPP, led by Dr Bawumia, has no future for the Free SHS hence the government must be booted out in the December 7 polls.

Below is his statement;

On FSHS: When dealing with the IMF, DMB/NPP say they will review and rationalise it. But, when dealing with Ghanaians, they say they will improve it. Here is the evidence!

1. DMB/NPP on FSHS to IMF:
“In the educational sector, we will review and rationalise the Free Senior High School (SHS) program.” Point 47, page 76, IMF Country Report No. 24/30, January 2024.

2. DMB/NPP on FSHS to GH:
“Under my government Free SHS will continue and we will improve upon it”. Point 168, page 69. Ghana’s Next Chapter: Selfless Leadership and Bold Solutions for the Future, February 2024.

One thing is obvious. There is nothing bold in saying different things about the same issue to different categories of people or entities. Such conduct is not only insincere and dishonest but cowardly.

Reject IMPROVE FSHS in the day and REVIEW FSHS in the night. Reject duplicity. Integrity must count. Vote for JM/NDC.

All African Games: Okudzeto uncovers ‘loot and share’ operational expenses

MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has intercepted documents of what he alleges is a grand scheme to steal from the public purse a whopping US$48million, about GHC604 million cedis under the guise of operational expenses during the upcoming 13th All African Games.

According to him, the figure surpasses the threshold approved by Parliament by about 500%.
In a social media post, publishing details of his findings, the MP who is also the Ranking Member on the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament, accused President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Sports Ministry, and the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the games of complicity.

In reference to the intercepted documents, he concluded… “they have shockingly agreed to spend an elephantine, wrongful and unconscionable US$48million on so-called “operational expenses” for the 13th African Games to be hosted in Ghana between the period — March 5 to March 23, 2024.
He explained that the whopping amount, US$48 million is entirely different US$195 million (GHS2.4 billion) already spent on stadia and other infrastructure for the games.

He served notice that the Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif will be hauled before Parliament this week to explain how they arrived at the said expenditure.

PRESIDENT AKUFO-ADDO’S ELEPHANTINE, WRONGFUL & UNCONSCIONABLE US$48MILLION (GHS602MILLION) “OPERATIONAL EXPENSES” FOR THE 13TH AFRICAN GAMES

1. Even before the dust settles on the scandalous US$8.5million AFCON budget brouhaha; unimpeachable, unassailable and incontrovertible intercepted documents in my possession reveal for the first time that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his appointees at the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) have shockingly agreed to spend an elephantine, wrongful and unconscionable US$48million on so-called “operational expenses” for the 13th African Games to be hosted in Ghana between the period — March 5 to March 23, 2024. [Refer to intercepted documents attached]

2. It must be noted that this staggering US$48million is an entirely different amount from the mega US$195million (GHS2.4billion) already spent on infrastructure for the games.

3. At the prevailing exchange rate, US$48million is equivalent to a colossal GHS602million.

4. A careful reading of the intercepted February 13, 2024 letter signed by the LOC Executive Chairman, Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare confirms that this ginormous US$48million (GHS602million) will be spent in less than a three week period (18 days). This translates into a 6-day weekly expenditure on “operational expenses” of a mind boggling GHS200.6million, and an even more incredible daily “operational expenses” of GHS33.4million.

5. It is most instructive to note that apart from the blatant profligacy and reckless wastefulness by the leader of a bankrupt, debt-distress IMF bailout country; President Akufo-Addo’s conduct is absolutely wrong because Parliament approved GHS100million under Goods and Services and then GHS50million for Capital Expenditure for the 2024 expenditure by the Ministry of Youth and Sports on the 13th African Games. [see page 230 of 2024 Budget as attached]. It is therefore totally lawless and utterly repugnant for President Akufo-Addo to unilaterally vary by more than six times what Parliament has approved for non-CapEX — that is from GHS100million to GHS602million.

6. The intercepted documents confirm that despite Parliament’s approval of only GHS100million, President Akufo-Addo instructed the LOC to send out official request letters as recent as February 13, 2024 in which they defy Parliament and communicate their outlandish, unlawful and unjustifiable US$48million (GHS602million).

7. It is regrettable to note that instead of President Akufo-Addo and his appointees at the Sports Ministry and LOC acknowledging Ghana’s current economic crisis and slashing their ostentatious US$48million (GHS602million) “operational expenses” budget, he rather proceeded to personally chair fundraising meetings on the 6th and 7th of November, 2023 at the Jubilee House with an objective of raising the US$48million (GHS602million). [See evidence of the President’s meetings attached].

8. A number of top executives who have received the Akufo-Addo-inspired US$48million (GHS602million) shocking request letter are outraged about the quantum for a broke country and the deliberate refusal to transparently present a breakdown.

9. Careful analysis of the entities President Akufo-Addo met during his now infamous fundraising engagements show that the President is mainly interested in public funds either by targeting SOEs such as GNPC, Ghana Gas, BOST and GOIL; or by targeting private companies such as MacDan, Zoomlion, MODEC and Kosmos all noted for executing huge government contracts.

10. Additionally, the President’s conduct raises fundamental ethical questions: how did the President select these companies? What promises did President Akufo-Addo make to these CEOs? How can other companies compete fairly with these “presidential companies” in any competitive bidding process, particularly considering the current single-source procurement epidemic? After these companies present their US$5million sponsorship cash to the President’s misplaced fundraising campaign, how can taxpayers be assured of value for money in the projects these entities would execute?

11. Should GNPC, Ghana Gas, BOST and GOIL which belong to the Ghanaian people be compelled by President Akufo-Addo to sponsor his unconscionable GHS602million 13th African Games “Operational Expenses” when these corporations could be allowed to make more meaningful investments in expanding their operations so they could create sustainable jobs for the youth and thereby help address Ghana’s acute youth unemployment?

12. Why are these SOEs beginning to make payment due to President Akufo-Addo’s unlawful pressure when they haven’t sought Parliamentary approval? The BOST management should prepare to answer questions in Parliament for the initial US$500,000.00 (GHS6.2million) it transferred to Akufo-Addo’s LOC a few days ago.

13. The Minority Caucus in Parliament led by the dynamic Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson will this week seek Speaker Bagbin’s blessings to summon the Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif on their unlawful, ostentatious and unconscionable US$48million (GHS602million) “Operational Expenses” budget which undermines the authority of Parliament — that will be a first step in a series of constitutional actions, not ruling out possible impeachment of President Akufo-Addo, as we are determined to make sure the President doesn’t get away with another blatant “create, loot and share” scheme.

14. President Akufo-Addo’s unpatriotic and nation-wrecking act of approving and leading the collection of this gigantic US$48million (GHS602million) for so-called “Operational Expenses” for the 13th African Games deserves to be exposed and scuttled.

15. A government denying pensioners their life savings; a government unable to house VRA spillage victims who are still living in refugee-like tents after five months; a government unable to equip our hospitals including the renal unit of KATH, the imaging departments at Korle-Bu, Ridge, 37 and our regional hospitals; a government which claims it cannot subsidize dialysis treatment and prevent our compatriots from dying; a government unable to clear billions in arrears to contractors, independent power producers, school feeding caterers, public sector workers, teacher and nursing trainees, national service personnel, DACF, NHIS, GETFund; a government unable to employ thousands of young graduates who offered nursing and PharmD and have had to stay at home for years; a government which embarrassingly owed the Black Queens for many months until recent fierce mass agitations; and a government desperately seeking an IMF bailout must not be allowed to spend US$48million (GHS602million) for an 18-day event, particularly when Parliament has generously approved GHS100million. We shall surely defeat this lootocratic scheme!

For God and Country.

The King and Overlord of Gonja, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale has assured former President John Dramani Mahama of the full support of his Kingdom as he travels the length and breadth of Ghana in his bid to win the December 7, 2024 elections.

The renowned Chief subsequently cautioned the Electoral Commission and the security agencies to remain neutral to guarantee the credibility of the elections.

Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale also prayed the National Peace Council will be proactive in its deliberations.

In a speech read on his behalf when the NDC 2024 flagbearer called on him at his Palace, as part of his #BuildingGhanaTour of the Savannah Region, the King and Overlord of Gonja said there is no doubt about Mr Mahama’s experience both as President and Vice President, stressing that his track record puts him far ahead of his contender.

He noted that the Gonjaland ancestry are with Mahama, their son, and will go at any length to support his comeback.

He also prayed that the former president will not turn his back at his people if he is sworn-in as President, come January 7, 2025.

“The entire Gonja Kingdom is behind you as a son. Therefore, do not let us down when given the nod. Leave behind a generational legacy that will make us proud. Our ancestors are with you; the Great Ndewura Jakpa’s warrior’s spirit is with you as you go round thee length and breadth of the country to seek the people’s mandate again” he intimated.

Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale also endorsed John Mahama’s proposed 24-hour economy policy which he said will surely boost growth and job creation.

He however called on the NDC flagbearer to intensify education to make the policy proposal a household name to ensure general acceptability.

“We have heard about your plans to introduce a 24-hour economy policy which, if successfully implemented, will contribute to addressing under development, poverty and unemployment.

“We, however, need further explanation from you and your team. If Ghana succeeds, it succeeds for everyone and not just the people of a particular party. This is what we want for our country” the King and Overlord of the Gonja explained.
