Lab workers’ strike worrying; Gov’t must sit up quickly – Dr Anaba

Former medical superintendent of the Ridge hospital, Dr Thomas Winsum Anaba has criticised the Akufo-Addo government’s reluctance to meeting the demands of the striking Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union (MELPWU).

The group announced a strike on June 17 over the lack of conditions of service for its members, despite nearly two years of negotiations with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).

The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and the Ministry of Health  met with the leadership of MELPWU last week to negotiate their conditions of service but the meeting was inconclusive.

Dr Adu Gyamfi, Public relations for MELPWU told Power FM News that the government was not committed to meetingn their demands which they had been drumming home for the past 2 years, saying ” the government says 2 out of the 13 allowances we are demanding will only be admitted for execution.”

But Dr Anaba, who spoke to Piesie Okrah on TV XYZ Wednesday night, bemoaned the strike action by MELPWU but hastened that the government was not treating the professional laboratory workers fairly.

He wondered why a group of people rendering such an essential servie in state hospitals would be treated in a way that had to trigger a nationwide strike while CEOs of state institutions such as the Ghana Cocoa Board are drawing fat allowances for less work done.

“Some of these CEos take fat allowances; others even take allowances for entertainment,” he stated and urged the government “to sit up” and act swiftly to end the strike.

Dr Anaba, worryingly indicated that patients visiting some public health facilities for lab services have been left stranded due to the strike, as some are forced to pay for higher costs of lab services at private facilities.

He added that the strike is causing unnecessary “mortalities” that does not speak well about the handlers of the matter before the Fair wages and Salaries Commission.

Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union, Cephas Kofi Akortor, claims the FWSC has failed to fulfil all the promises made to the National Labour Commission, which is a contributory factor for their strike.

CEO of Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, Ben Arthur.

“Fair Wages is not being fair. Fair Wages should have been a bit more proactive in their engagement because we are essential service workers. We should not be treated like any kind of people,” he told Joy FM News on June 19.

Mr Akortor further alleges that the Commission has always treated the union with contempt.

According to him, each time the FWSC agreed to engage with MELPWU, it was always in response to a protest.

“We have never written to them [FWSC] requesting a meeting and Fair Wages will act upon that. At all times our engagement will take about three months cycle. We will have one meeting today, the next engagement will be about three months later, four months later. It has not been fair,” he added.

Adults aged 25 and above constitute majority of HIV population – AIDS Commission

The Ghana AIDS Commission has expressed concerns about the increasing rate of new HIV infections and the age groups most affected in the country.

The Commission has therefore emphasised the need for Ghana to announce and implement plans to achieve epidemic control.

Ghana recorded a 9.0% increase in the HIV population from 2013 to 2023, with an expected increase of 6.8% from 2023 to 2030. New HIV infections stand at 17,774, a 14.8% decrease. Additionally, 12,480 deaths were recorded, marking a decrease of 20.5% in annual AIDS deaths from 2013 to 2023, with an expected further decrease of 58.1% from 2023 to 2030.

The total HIV population is 334,095, with new infections at 17,774. Accra, Ashanti, and the Eastern Region have the highest numbers of HIV cases in the country, while the Bono Region leads with an HIV prevalence rate of 2.12%.

Presenting the dissemination of the 2023 national and sub-national HIV and AIDS estimates and projections at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, the Director-General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Dr Kyeremeh Atuahene, called for stringent measures to be put in place to enable the country to achieve epidemic control.

“Adults aged 25 and above constitute the majority of the HIV population, which is about 84.7 percent. You can see quite clearly that the bulk of the people either dying of AIDS, being newly infected and being one of the HIV population in the country lie between the ages of, 15 to 49.

“That’s where you see the bulk of the population. This population is an economically active population. These are the people who work and earn income to support the country as well as the dependent population in the country.”

“That is the aged and the children who are not working. I’m making this point because it shows quite clearly that HIV is a developmental issue. It’s an economic issue, and it’s also a business issue.

“And so we should remember that our ability to eliminate AIDS or end AIDS and achieve epidemic control in the country should be the business of everyone, and therefore, we need to work together,” he stated.

I’ll set up regional agro-processing zones when elected – Mahama

Former President  and the flag bearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has reiterated his commitment to revamping the agriculture sector to create sustainable jobs for the youth when elected in the December elections.

He emphasised that his plan is to establish agro-industrial processing zones in all 16 regions in Ghana in collaboration with the Ghana EXIM Bank to enhance the value of crops for which the regions have a competitive advantage.

In a Facebook post after touring the Northern part of the country recently, Mr Mahama explained that the move is not to only create jobs for the people of Ghana but also to enable Ghanaians to gradually reduce their dependence on the import of raw materials.

“I am passionate about creating a thriving agricultural sector and am committed to delivering on my promises to support small businesses and farmers across the country”, he stated while reassuring Ghanaians that “Agriculture and agro-processing are a priority for me.”

Below is his post

During my recent visit back home, I had the privilege of meeting with a cashew nuts businessman, Mr Taylor, and his dedicated staff. It was a humbling experience to hear their stories and campaign for their votes in the 7th of December election. It was touching to hear about the importance of his business and how it has provided employment opportunities for young people in the area.

This is why I remain committed to supporting small business owners like Taylor and fulfilling my promise to set up regional processing zones. Agriculture and agro-processing are a priority for me, and empowering farmers and supporting agro-industrial processing will significantly impact our economy.

My plan is to establish special agro-industrial processing zones in all sixteen regions and, in collaboration with the Ghana EXIM Bank, enhance the value of the crops for which they have a comparative advantage. This strategic move will not only open new job opportunities but also enable us to gradually reduce our dependence on the import of strategic products currently imported as raw materials.

I am passionate about creating a thriving agricultural sector and am committed to delivering on my promises to support small businesses and farmers across the country. Together, we would build a prosperous and sustainable future for Ghana.

Fair Wages is not being fair to us – Striking lab workers

The General Secretary of the Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union (MELPWU), Cephas Kofi Akortor, says the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has not lived up to its mandate.

The group announced a strike on June 17 over the lack of conditions of service for its members, despite nearly two years of negotiations with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).
The union deemed the last meeting on May 31, 2024, as “disappointing.”

Patients visiting some public health facilities for lab services have been left stranded due to the strike, as some are forced to pay for higher costs of lab services at private facilities.
But the General Secretary of the Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union claims the FWSC has failed to fulfil all the promises made to the National Labour Commission, which is a contributory factor for their strike.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Midday News on June 19, he said, “Fair Wages is not being fair. Fair Wages should have been a bit more proactive in their engagement because we are essential service workers. We should not be treated like any kind of people,” he said.

When asked about the effects of their strike on healthcare delivery, the General Secretary explained that the leadership was in a difficult position because union members believed they were hesitant to strike due to potential government inducement.

He added that the desperation of their members ultimately led to the strike.

Meanwhile, he expressed the hope that the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission would invite them to the negotiation table to resolve the issue.

The Ministry of Health a statement on Monday, June 17, said significant progress had been made in the negotiations, with most of the proposed items agreed upon by the government Negotiations Team, urging the union to end the strike and return to the negotiation table.

Supreme Court affirms Appeal Court decision to continue Opuni’s Case

The Supreme Court has by a unanimous decision affirmed a Court of Appeal decision not to start the criminal trial of the former COCOBOD boss Stephen Opuni from scratch.

Justice Kwasi Anokye Gyimah who was assigned to the case after Justice Hornyenugah retired, ruled for the case to start from scratch. In his view, the records had been tainted due to the allegations of unfairness against Justice Hornyenugah.

The Attorney General however appealed the decision at the court of appeal.

The Court of Appeal reversed the decision of Justice Gyimah and asked that the case continue from where Justice Horneynugah left the case.

Lawyers of Stephen Opuni however filed an appeal at the Supreme Court challenging the decision of the court of appeal.

The apex court presided by Chief Justice Gertrude Esaaba Torkonoo in a unanimous decision however dismissed the appeal reaffirming the decision of the court of appeal.

The case is thus expected to continue at the High Court where the second accused, Seidu Agongo has opened his defence and his fifth witness is testifying.

Arda Güler thunderbolt lights up thrilling win over Georgia

Arda Güler announced himself on the EURO finals stage with a memorable goal as Türkiye edged out debutants Georgia in Dortmund.

A stunning second-half strike from Real Madrid youngster Arda Güler helped Türkiye earn a 3-1 victory in a UEFA EURO 2024 Group F thriller against debutants Georgia in Dortmund.

For much of the opening half-hour, the question was less who would win than how much Türkiye would win by – with Hakan Çalhanoğlu setting the tempo, the Crescent-Stars sparkled. The goal frame had scarcely stopped vibrating from Kaan Ayhan’s fierce drive against the post when Mert Müldür met a headed clearance with the sweetest of volleys.

Kenan Yıldız found the net again moments later, with an effort disallowed for offside after consulting VAR. Georgia were rocking; no matter, Georges Mikautadze soon got them rolling. Just past the half-hour, the Metz forward diverted Giorgi Kochorashvili’s low cross in at the near post, and he was a whisker away from another moments later.

Amid driving rain, Türkiye steadied the ship, re-establishing their dominance after the break, and Arda Güler drove home the advantage in emphatic fashion with a wonderful strike from distance. Georgia never knew they were beaten, though. Kochorashvili rattled the bar and, deep into added time, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s free-kick came back off the upright.

The debutants threw everything – including goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili – forward. With 97 minutes on the clock, however, Türkiye settled it following a corner, substitute Kerem Aktürkoğlu side-footing into the empty net.

He created a lot of problems in the second half when he played through the middle, and it was a good pass from him that led to the first goal; his excellent goal helped decide the game. He also demonstrated leadership, getting instructions across to others. He made the difference.

After losing the opening game in each of their five previous EURO appearances, Türkiye stopped the rot – aided by two extraordinary strikes. Vincenzo Montella’s side were pegged back after their first goal but held on following their second, before sealing all three points on the counter right at the death. It is their first victory at the EURO for eight years.

Portugal came from behind to beat Czech Republic 2-1

Francisco Conceicao’s 92nd-minute goal ensured a winning start to Euro 2024 for Portugal as Roberto Martinez’s side came from behind to beat Czech Republic 2-1 in Group F.

As the clock ticked down in stoppage time at the Leipzig Stadium, Porto youngster Conceicao, making his first competitive appearance for Portugal, netted from close range after Czech Republic failed to clear a low cross from fellow substitute Pedro Neto.

Earlier in the second half, Czech Republic midfielder Lukas Provod’s stunning strike from the edge of the box had punished Portugal’s failure to take numerous chances, many of which fell to a wasteful Cristiano Ronaldo, making history as the first player to feature at a sixth European Championship at the age of 39.

Portugal levelled shortly after Provod’s shock opener in fortuitous circumstances when Czech Republic goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek pushed a Nuno Mendes header into the legs of defender Robin Hranac, with the ball bouncing back into the net for an own goal.

It seemed the Czechs were going to hang on for a point when Diogo Jota’s 87th-minute header, after Ronaldo’s effort had come back off the post, was ruled out for offside following a VAR check.

But, with only two minutes of stoppage time remaining, Neto and Conceicao combined to clinch a narrow win, ensuring Portugal, European champions in 2016 and one of the favourites to win this year’s tournament, move level on points with Turkey, who beat Georgia 3-1 in the earlier game in Group F.

Gabby and Asante Bediatuo have become rich overnight under Akufo-Addo due to corruption – Listowel

The Executive director for Good Governance Advocacy, Listowel Nana Kusi Poku, has urged Ghanaians to rise up against the corruption and state capture being witnessed under the Akufo-Addo government.

He is of the conviction that a lot of people who were close to Akufo-Addo during opposition and struggled to pay rent have become rich overnight due to their corrupt activities in the country.

Speaking on Dwaboase breakfast show on TV XYZ Tuesday morning, the political activist decried the current state of the country which is endowed with rich natural resources.

To him, the cousins of Akufo-Addo including the former Executive Director of the Danquah Institute, Gabby Asare Otchere Darko, the Executive Secretary of President Nana Akufo-Addo, Nana Asante Bediatuo and other close associates of the President have acquired questionable assets under this regime.

“Today these people have acquired so much wealth under Akufo-Addo yet they struggled to pay their rent before they came to power,” he told host Kwame Minkah.

Kusi Poku intimated that Gabby Asare Otchere Darko could possibly be the richest man in Ghana now because of his association with Akufo-Addo.

“Gabby struggled to pay rent but today I think he is the richest man in Ghana… How did he get so rich when he could not afford to pay his rent?”

” Asante Bediatuo, prior to coming to power, could only boast of a rickety Tata vehicle but today he is rich and acquiring so much wealth and buying big hotels. I remember when Mugabe [host of Inside Politics on Power FM] was hauled to court in 2016, I met Asante Bediatuo in court and the exhaust fumes from his vehicle soiled our shirts. That was a rickety vehicle but he is now rich,” Listowel stated.

Kusi Poku’s comments come on the back of a street protest against the sale of a 60 percent stake in four hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).

The hotels are being sold to Rock City Hotel, which is owned by the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is the one leading the protest today dubbed ‘Hands off our hotels’.

The development has triggered agitations among some Ghanaians and labour unions for the past few weeks.

Reacting to the demonstration, Kusi Poku argued that the sale of the state hotels is a grand scheme by the Akufo-Addo government to sell state assets to cronies.

“This state capture tactics by Akufo-Addo and his kinsmen must stop,” he said.

To him, the sale of these hotels to cronies is a way those around Akufo-Addo are using “to wash their dirty money acquired through illegal means.”

[Photos] Okudzeto Ablakwa leads protest in Accra against sale of SSNIT hotels

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is leading a protest today against the sale of a 60 percent stake in four hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).

The hotels are to be sold to Rock City Hotel, which is owned by the Food and Agriculture Minister, Bryan Acheampong.

The development has triggered agitations among some Ghanaians and labour unions for the past few weeks.

They argue that the hotels could be well managed to make profits to secure the future of Ghanaian workers who contribute to SSNIT.

Ablakwa stated that the protest aims to compel the president to prevent the sale of these hotels.

Minority Support

The Minority in Parliament which raised red flags against the take over of the hotels declared its support for the street protest when it was first announced by Mr Okudzeto Ablakwa.

The Minority says it fully backs the protest march.

A statement issued by Minority Chief Whip, Kwame Agbodza Governs on Monday, June 17, 2024 described what it calls ‘the sweat-heart’ deal to sell off the state assets to key government appointee, Bryan Acheampong.

Agbodza Governs said the move is unacceptable and calls for mass action to stop profitable entities from being  sold to government cronies as part of the state capture agenda.

The protest which commenced at one of the hotels in question, Labadi Beach Hotel, in Accra, the protesters chanted various patriotic songs, registering their displeasure against the development.

They held placards with the inscription “Hands off our Hotels”, “Save our hotels”, ” Driver Banza (A reckless driver)”  amongst others.

The protest is expected to be held for hours. It will end at the Holy Spirit Cathedral at Cantoment which is closer to the Jubilee House–the seat of Government.

The Minority in Parliament says it fully backs the protest March scheduled for tomorrow against the sale of hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust, SSNIT

A statement issued by Minority Chief Whio, Kwame Agbodza Governs on Monday, June 17, 2024 described what it calls ‘the sweat-heart’ deal to sell off the state assets to key government appointee, Bryan Acheampong, who is currently the Minister for Agriculture, unacceptable and calls for mass action to stop profitable entities to cronies as part of the state capture agenda

PRESS STATEMENT

MINORITY IN PARLIAMENT FULLY SUPPORTS “HANDS OFF OUR HOTELS DEMONSTRATION”

The Minority in Parliament fully supports the upcoming “Hands Off Our Hotels Demonstration” scheduled for Tuesday, 18th June, 2024, in Accra.

The demonstration has been called to protest against the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government’s shady sale of state-owned hotels to the Minister of Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

This sweetheart deal which transfers iconic and profitable state-owned hotels to a cabinet minister further confirms the wanton cronyism, official corruption and state capture which have become the hallmark of the NPP government.

This adds to the long list of questionable arrangements which make Ghanaians wonder whether members of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government are committed to improving the lot of the people or only see political power as an avenue to enrich themselves by grabbing state-owned businesses and strategic state assets for themselves.

We therefore want to use this opportunity to indicate the Minority’s strong opposition to the sale of these hotels to the Minister of Agriculture, Hon Bryan Acheampong, and urge the public to join Tuesday’s “Hands Off Our Hotels Demonstration” to send a strong signal to the government that the people of Ghana take exception to this shady deal.

Enough is enough!
The attempt to sell off profitable state-owned hotels to Hon. Bryan Acheampong is wrong, unacceptable and must not be condoned.
