Akwatia by-election: Mahama endorses NDC candidate Bernard Bediako

President John Dramani Mahama has endorsed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, Bernard Bediako, ahead of the upcoming Akwatia by-election.

Delivering the President’s message on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at a campaign rally, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah urged voters to throw their support behind the NDC candidate.

“John Mahama says I should tell you, the people of Akwatia, that he wants to work with the NDC candidate Bernard Bediako in his government,” Mr. Debrah told cheering supporters.

He stressed that an NDC victory would strengthen the partnership between government and the constituency to accelerate local development.

The by-election, scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, was triggered by the death of sitting MP Ernest Yaw Kumi.

The race has set up a fierce contest between the ruling NDC and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Independent polls suggest a close contest, though the NDC is seen to have a slight edge. Political analysts say the outcome will serve as an early test of grassroots strength for both parties in the Eastern Region.
