The Country Director and Representative of the World Food Programme (WFP) in Ghana, Aurore Rusiga, has commended the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) for its effective implementation, describing the quality of meals and the programme’s management as impressive.
Speaking after a monitoring visit to Kwabenya Atomic M/A Basic Schools 3 and 4, Mad. Rusiga said she was particularly encouraged by the number of children benefiting from the programme and the quality of food being served.
Having sampled the meals herself, she noted that the food was well prepared and nutritious. However, she observed that while fish powder provided an important source of protein, the meals lacked sufficient vegetables due to budget constraints.
She suggested that increasing the feeding grant or establishing school gardens could help caterers supplement meals with fresh vegetables, thereby improving the nutritional value of the food served to pupils.
Mad. Rusiga also praised the management of the Ghana School Feeding Programme and highlighted the impact of the School Connect digital monitoring system, which was developed with funding from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in partnership with the World Food Programme.
According to her, the digital platform is strengthening accountability, improving transparency, and generating reliable data to support evidence-based policymaking and programme management.
She expressed satisfaction with the level of proficiency demonstrated by school officials using the application, noting that although the platform was introduced only a few months ago, users had quickly adapted to the system.
Mad. Aurore expressed hope that the success of the School Connect initiative would encourage its expansion to more schools across the country to further strengthen monitoring and improve the delivery of the Ghana School Feeding Programme.
