A devastating fire at a popular pub in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district killed at least 27 people and left dozens more injured, officials said on Monday, one of the deadliest incidents of its kind in Thailand’s tourism hub in recent years.
The blaze broke out around 11:57 p.m. local time on Sunday. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who visited the scene, said 27 bodies had been recovered, with others taken to hospital. According to survivor accounts, thick smoke quickly filled the venue, trapping many near the bathrooms at the back, where there were no fire escapes.
Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s disaster prevention director Suriyachai Rawiwan said 63 people were hospitalized, with 22 in critical condition, according to Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt. He added that the death toll had stabilized at 27.
Rescue teams arrived to find the fire which witnesses said started at the front stage area had already spread rapidly through the pub.
