The Government of Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights of Ghanaian citizens abroad, confirming that it is providing consular assistance to the Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Hon. Ohene Kwame Frimpong, who is being detained in the Netherlands under a United States extradition request.
Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, disclosed this at a media briefing, explaining that the MP was detained by Dutch immigration authorities at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam on 10 May 2026.
According to the Minister, Ghana’s Embassy in The Hague has been actively engaging the MP’s family, legal representatives and the Dutch authorities to ensure that he is treated in accordance with international legal standards and that his rights are fully protected throughout the legal process.
Mr. Ablakwa revealed that he personally visited the detained lawmaker on 24 May 2026 as part of a consular visit and also met with the MP’s legal counsel. He said the MP was in good condition during the visit.
The Foreign Affairs Minister further disclosed that he raised the matter during a recent meeting with the Dutch Minister for Justice and Security, who assured him that the Dutch government remains committed to due process and would ensure that the rights of the Ghanaian MP are respected throughout the extradition proceedings.
Mr. Ablakwa stressed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to provide consular support to all Ghanaian citizens facing challenges abroad, regardless of their political affiliation, social status or the nature of their legal circumstances.
He emphasised that every Ghanaian is entitled to consular protection and assistance from the Government of Ghana through its diplomatic missions whenever they encounter difficulties outside the country.
